|abstract=Scholia is a web service hosted on Toolforge that generates scholarly profiles that provide windows into Wikidata's research-related content.
It can be used to get an overview about a specific aspect of research, which could be, for instance, a topic, a research institution or a biological species — over 20 profile types are available.
Scholia can also facilitate several forms of deeper engagement with some such aspects, e.g. the topics of publications using a particular resource. It facilitates data curation and can assist groups in prioritizing edits, identifiying gaps and coordinating activities.

In this workshop, participants will learn how Scholia works, how it can be used, how it interacts with Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, Wikipedia and other parts of the Wikimedia landscape. Special attention will be given to community structures like WikiProjects and how they can integrate Scholia with their workflows.
|abstract=Wikidata's items contain information about concepts and relationships between them, structured in a way that is somewhat language-agnostic. Wikidata also contains language-specific information, particularly in the lexeme namespace, which annotates words and phrases and their various forms and functions on a per-language basis. Specific meanings of lexemes can be linked to the corresponding items.

Text mining workflows often contain steps that try to map strings to linguistic forms and functions and from there to potential meanings.

This talk makes the case that Wikidata's information about lexemes and their relationships to items can assist text-mining efforts in principle, yet the workflows for that have room for improvement.
Conversely, text mining workflows typically have specific targets, yet they have to process large amounts of text to find these targets. Some of the intermediate results produced on the way may be useful for Wikidata.

The talk will sketch out some workflows that can connect Wikidata and mining workflows in both directions and highlight some examples.
TOCright
WikiConference North America 2023 will include unconference sessions on Friday and Saturday, November 10 and 11, where anyone can propose or spontaneously organize a mini-presentation, discussion, or workshop on a wiki-related topic.

See 20-second intro video to unconferencing.

You are welcome to add yourself to the list below with topics you'd like to present on. Adding your name and a timeslot below serves as a "noticeboard announcement" for your activity and does not guarantee you the space at that time. The room is available on a first-come-first-served basis.

Unconference
We will have workshop session space available in Executive Board Room on first floor. Please note that this room only has a capacity of 30 people. In addition, there is no AV, translation or web streaming ability offered during Unconference sessions.

Meetup/workshop topics
Please propose topics and time frames. Organizers will put them on the wiki schedule here.

Friday, GLAM roundtable
*PROPOSED: Executive Board Room, Friday, 10:15 am to 11:00 am. or lunch time. GLAM roundtable discussing critical issues around GLAM needs and technology. Led by Andrew Lih, with guest Selena Deckelmann, and those interested in GLAM wiki. Interested parties:

Research and Wikimedia interact in multiple ways, some of which will be highlighted here using examples with a relationship to Canada. The type of questions that will be addressed is as follows: How is Canada's research landscape represented on Wikimedia projects? What mechanisms exist to feed research priorities or research news from Canada into the Wikimedia ecosystem? How is research-related content represented - and accessed - on Wikimedia platforms in the languages relevant to people in Canada? How can and do Wikimedians interact with Canada-related research? How can and do Canada-related researchers interact with the Wikimedia ecosystem? How can and do citizen science projects and Wikimedia activities intersect in Canada? Who in Canada or in the Wikimedia community cares about such issues? What kinds of problems could arise from such interactions, and what mechanisms exist to address them? Can we discern any trends?

Based on my own interactions with the Canadian parts of the Wikimedia and research ecosystems, I have a list of examples to draw from, but I welcome additional suggestions to look into in preparation for the session.

Based on my own interactions with the Canadian parts of the Wikimedia and research ecosystems, I have a list of examples to draw from, but I welcome additional suggestions to look into in preparation for the session.
|abstract=Wikidata's items contain information about concepts and relationships between them, structured in a way that is somewhat language-agnostic.

The talk will sketch out some workflows that can connect Wikidata and mining workflows in both directions and highlight some examples.
|type=Presentation
|abstract="Systematic Reviews" (SR) are literature reviews conducted through reproducible steps and expected to provide reproducible results. We are currently advancing both methods and tools to support improvements concerning reproducible results, which in this case relates to obtaining identical or very similar clusters of selected articles to use in the review.
Operating WikiLetters Systematic Review (WLSR) currently requires feeding the system with around (N) academic publications identified as potential candidates for inclusion in the review. But what is N? N is about 10 times the total number of publications (T) you estimate to source through your review, which can be easily and roughly estimated via assessing other reviews on similar topics. That means if you aim to provide about 100 papers in your review then you plan to feed the system with about 1000 papers, which is currently a limitation in the process to be further improved.
The proposed presentation is meant to provide an overview of the current updated WLSR process, discuss about strengths and weaknesses of both methods and computing capacity. It will also discuss alternatives to reduce massive downloading of files by using current information available via projects such as The General Index or Open Alex.
While we acknowledge the existence of other tools to help SR, WLSR benefits include the following: it's free, it's open, it's transparent, it is highly reproducible and gives the authors power to provide meaningful evidence to attach to their publication. Consequently, traditional statements commonly found in Systematic Reviews, such as "The initial results were 2345, which after doing this (…) were reduced to 543, and after doing that (...) were further reduced to 69" can be replaced with information that can lead to reproducible methods yielding to reproducible results.
WLSR promotes activism and consumer rights protection of the existing projects WikiCite, Wikidata, Scholia, CiTO, WikiJournal, and it promotes the Wikipedia ecosystem as an environment for serious academic research.
Curation of Wikipedia pages by faculty or other research experts with advanced knowledge in specific areas can greatly improve the content of pages. Graduate trainees and postdoctoral fellows have strong abilities to learn and are en route to becoming experts in their areas of interest. Therefore, university communities provide rich environments for engaging experts and advanced trainees in curating Wikipedia. Contributing to Wikipedia also brings groups together across historically siloed University departments. Workshops and seminars about the use of Wikipedia in education provide a medium for engaging members from across the breadth of the University community. Incorporating Wikipedia curating into classroom projects engages emerging professionals with the Wikipedia process and gives graduate trainees experience in writing for a public audience. The panel will discuss the variety of ways in which they have engaged with Wikipedia within their respective university communities, and reciprocally learn from the audience community.

{{WCNA 2021 Session Submission
|theme=Global & Local
|type=Workshop
|abstract=This is a continuation of the Wikimania session Wikimedia and Sustainability-Selecting topics for impact. In that session, we mapped (and peer reviewed) common Wikimedia activities towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This led to the insight that some goals have few Wikimedia activities, whereas others naturally align well with what the Wikimedia movement does. However, this was in no way an exhaustive list, and we thus plan to iterate on it several times. The session ended with an ideation phase around the goals that had least identified activities. We now have a large table with activities which maps them towards the SDGs.

With this session, we aim to achieve three things: - Refine the table of mapped activities we have - Peer review the additions that were made during Wikimania - Highlight existing activities in the areas where we have the greatest gaps, and brainstorm topics on the areas that have the largest gaps.

|abstract=This is a continuation of the Wikimania session Wikimedia and Sustainability-Selecting topics for impact.

With this session, we aim to achieve three things: - Refine the table of mapped activities we have - Peer review the additions that were made during Wikimania - Highlight existing activities in the areas where we have the greatest gaps, and brainstorm topics on the areas that have the largest gaps.
|type=Research + Output
|idea=apply existing Wikipedia workflows to translate COVID-19 content from English into underserved languages

|importance=The necessary response to COVID-19 includes making information available to everyone who wants it. For language communities which have not already gotten translations of key information, this project will organize translation from English and deliver it to the language communities which need it through their language version of Wikipedia.

The Wikipedia community historically has operated at the pace of available volunteer labor. What is different now is that in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, everyone needs immediate access to certain high priority health messages. Some languages have communities which are translating this content, but other languages do not have capacity. If we translate English Wikipedia COVID-19 articles into other languages which do not have this content available in their language, then Internet users will find and access it immediately.

|inprogress=No, this project is not already in progress. Yes, the University of Virginia has a related project in progress. Yes, there are various other wiki projects which are actively engaged in interconnected projects.

This project proposes to organize the translation of English Wikipedia COVID-19 content into languages which do not otherwise have this content, then publish it into the Wikipedia of that respective language. If this project does not do that, then there is no project planned that would.

At the University of Virginia, some faculty, staff, and students are contributing to a related project, SWASTHA, which seeks to translate medical information into languages of South Asia. Because of this existing engagement, the University of Virginia is already prepared to organize translation of other health information, such as for COVID-19, into various languages.

It is a wiki custom to invite participation and share credit for outcomes to related projects which contribute to the shared environment. This project will collaborate with and credit the following projects in the course of its development. These organizations or projects endorse this proposal specifically. However, all of these contribute resources into the public commons which this proposal uses.

*Thanks to these organizations. They and their individual participants are welcome to collaborate and share credit in this project.

The model of translating COVID-19 content and distributing it into Wikipedia is in progress. Many languages, though, are underserved and not getting sufficient amounts of original content or translations, simply because their Wikipedia communities are not developed enough to mobilize quickly or to process medical and other COVID-19 information at the necessary scale.

|relevance=Misinformation about COVID-19 is in global circulation. As many people, including journalists and policymakers, use Wikipedia as part of their fact checking workflows, publishing information in Wikipedia helps to correct such misinformation. Many cultures and languages have their own local stories. An example of good information to share is the COVID-19 message of the World Health Organization, and an example of misinformation in this space is any health information directly contrary to the WHO.

Sources of misinformation about COVID-19 include top ranking political leaders in various countries, influential promoters of contraindicated alternative medicine, and miscellaneous people everywhere publishing non-medical fantasy health strategies in the chaos.

Wikipedia is a transparent source of objective assertions where people can find summaries and citations of reliable sources and also have an opportunity to speak out and be heard in a public forum, even if they want to document their opposition in Wikipedia article talk pages.

|impact=This project will provide COVID-19-related information to language communities which we reasonably expect will not get access to this information otherwise at the necessary quantity, quality and speed. We will also document this project as a model of crisis response in Wikipedia in order to help prepare for future similar situations and also to promote the ideas of community collaboration, respect for the citations of reliable published authoritative sources, and transparency in the publishing process.

Specific deliverables for this project are as follows:
#Translation of COVID-19 content
##This project will start with these English Wikipedia articles
###Coronavirus disease 2019, the disease
###2019–20 coronavirus pandemic, the virus
###Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, the outbreak
##and translate them into these languages
###Urdu
###TBD, various possibilities, but decide based on need
#Documenting this process for others to replicate
##Take notes
###Organize translation
###Publish in Wikipedia
###Measure audience reaction
###Thank collaborators
##Publish a paper

|scalability=Yes. The part of this project which scales is using money to fund staff to speed the translation of well developed Wikipedia content from one language to another.

Wikipedia has many bottlenecks which typically are difficult to fix with money. One of the few bottlenecks in Wikipedia which sponsorship can resolve is content language translation.

|people=At the University of Virginia, we already have a Wikipedia program that has been ongoing since 2018. We can do this program in the model of university participation in Wikipedia, which is already established as a type of collaboration that the Wikimedia community wants and that already has a proven record of achieving results. At a university, students can take roles in projects by contributing and also discussing the ethics and intent of it.

Our university already does projects in medicine in Wikipedia.

I as project organizer, Lane Rasberry, am a coordinator for the Wikimedians in Residence Exchange Network where I report my activities to other staff Wikimedians at organizations to share them as part of the joint development of best practices. In this organization, people in similar roles all contribute their projects to establish a larger precedent.

|inclusiveness=This project promotes diversity and inclusiveness by publishing and delivering information about COVID-19 which certain language communities need in the present crisis.

A broader challenge which this project raises is that the Wikimedia community does not already have in place a disaster management plan for deciding what information is necessary to deploy and directing resources to meet some minimal information sharing with every language community which requires it. Having an American university fill this gap is an alternative to the ideal solution, which would be somehow supporting the local community of direct users in developing this content for themselves.

|challenges=The obvious big challenge is that this project is based in the United State but benefits a community of stakeholders in a foreign language community.

Ideally, a language project should have its own language community lead and manage it. As circumstances are, administering this project as quickly as necessary using only native speakers in their own native communities seems unprecedented.

The reason why this project should proceed despite the shortcoming of not being local is because every language community needs content quickly and the infrastructure for developing and publishing this content is not already in existence. This project will translate the content now, document what this university did, and raise awareness that the world collectively needs better infrastructure for translating and deploying information in crisis situations.

Thank you for joining us at WikiConference North America 2019 (aka WikiCredCon).

We have around $100,000 to give out to projects at the intersection of Wikipedia and credibility, especially if presented or related to WikiConference North America 2019. Thanks to Craig Newmark, Facebook and Microsoft for their generous support for these community grants.

Grants will range from $250 to slightly more than $10,000. The larger the grant ask, the more it has to squarely hit the intersection of Wikipedia and credibility, while having the potential to scale. If your ultimate ambition is greater than that amount, then ideally we can tee you up for additional funding by demonstrating success as a pilot. We want to share our funding pot among relevant projects, so please let us know what you would do if you got less than the original ask.

Note, your proposals are public on wikiconference.org. We will likely have follow-up questions for promising projects. You will hear from us through email.

Please be patient as this is our first time doing this, and we are trying to make this as efficient and lightweight as possible while still being rigorous and responsible in funding. In most cases, grant funds will likely be held by the WikiCred fund, and you will be able to invoice against it for labor, equipment costs, travel, etc. Ideally, we can pay the invoice directly or reimburse you by PayPal.
My schedule
About
This section lists what I know about my schedule, as per this learning pattern. It reflects my interests as well as the constraints of lots of things happening in parallel. Sessions I am involved in running are listed in bold and with a little elephant (🐘) that helps find them on this page. The hamster (🐹) serves a similar purpose for a subset of the elephant sessions. See 2019/Schedule for the official schedule. Sessions marked with a video camera (📹) will be live streamed and recorded. When in doubt, I will give preference to sessions that are not recorded, and watch the recorded ones later. If you'd like to meet me during the event, please add your user name and topic in a suitable slot. The fast forward icon (⏩) signals follow-up conversations.
About
This section lists what I know about my schedule, as per this learning pattern.
How to manage differing viewpoints?

Me talking about my conversation with bluerasberry. How big an issue is climate change? If it's big enough how many people are needed to enact change to prevent it? Does wikipedia reach that many people? If so how do we make it clear that this is as big an issue as it is to promote this change.

The climate change editing community is incredibly small, around 10, compared to how large the issue is.

Q: would it be helpful to get our sustainability people to run editathons with the wiki community. A: Yes

We have some really poor articles in the climate space and we need people to help maintain and grow them.

WikiConfs in South Africa about climate change was very successful and added a lot of African specific information

Q: whats the state of wikidata climate change?

A: We needs lots of data, many projects and many goals.

Somehing else that's missing is entry level contribution projects for climate topics. Lots of communties have approachable ways of creation but we haven't identified the way to do this.

The IPCC came up with this document to prevent climate growth beyond 1.5*, it's not clear how we implement this though. Wikipedia should be the source that does this

Q: what's stopping us from making that page?

A: we need someone who knows how to write this article to write it. This would be most effective with a wikipedian in residence.

Carlinmack wrote this colour

Discussion will continue on Sunday at lunch.

Sunday
* Daniel will be juggling https://wikiconference.org/wiki/Submissions:2019/WikiCite_track/Sunday_Lunch_Meetup in parallel.
* The event in south africa was so successful but to do a thing like this requires a lot of effort - 60 people, 3 days, 15 organisors.
* Could Alex write up his thoughts? He only does this in a volunteer capacity but it needs an owner. Esther would like to organise something but doesn't feel like she has the experience to execute it. There would be the resources needed from the Botanic Gardens (her institute). Alex suggests that the NY community is very supportive. Su-Laine can offer blogs and webinar training. However we need people to collaborate to write these really difficult to write articles that climate change requires. We need an organisation that can bring together the knowledge - a wikipedian here is from the national academies of sciences, engineering and medicine(?) and they have those people! She thinks that the academy is willing to pivot into accepting and creating content for wikipedia. Q: is there room for climate justice? Yes. We don't really have a protocol about scientists contributing to wikipedia and what the best practices are. Q: does the scope of your work include international scientists? A: Not so much but the connections do exist.
* Q: who goes to the botanical gardens events? A: We have connections to various local universities

Once we have a global community about sustainability we can integrate climate information into the articles about individual species, habitats. It makes it more of a default to have climate change information of everything in the world.

Wikipedia is strongest talking about the causes of climate change but we are missing information in the mitigation, adaptation and effects space. We need to put information in context and in scale. But first we need to think about strategy, . We have articles about individual mitigation of climate change, but not municiple mitigation. We can't rely on one scientist, we need general sources like the IPCC report on preventing 1.5*C.

Q: Where in the not article space can we start a bibliography of good sources? A: There's 3 hubs, a metapage https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Climate_change_portal, the en:wikiproject https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Climate_change and the wikidata portal https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:WikiProject_Climate_Change. We have good pubmed sources but we are missing good climate sources. Scholia https://tools.wmflabs.org/scholia/topic/Q125928

The agriculture perspective is missing from wikipedia but is key to climate change itself.

We should create a curriculum for general readers about good sources.

We need to be very clear with our tone of voice about how serious an issue this is. To guide our voice we need to assess what the consensus is right now. This is important because if we describe it as a theory vs a crisis it will shift the public perspective. We have recently done a name change to redirect climate change to global warming as climate change (general topic) is about climate change in history and not relevant to the current issue. It would be good to have a style guide

When the is a lot of information about a topic we look to general overviews like textbooks to decide what should be in an article. When speaking to scientists we need to explain that we can't use primary sources as they are too specific.

Policy articles right now are a mess as they are too large or out of date, so we need normal editorial work to improve these. The hardest part is finding useful sources so we should organise an event around that. Q: Have you done virtual meetups? A: They work well around a specific topic, but they don't work well for newcomers. However climate change is a different type of problem to like Woman in Red where every article follows a format and easy to find sources where they exist.

We need experts to come review articles and to provide sources. We only people who understand the research to write articles, not the sources themselves. Science communication and science are diffirent skills.

http://climatefeedback.org is a network of scientist that provide review of media coverage. There has been some interaction with the wiki community but they aren't responsive to the community. They have an annotator tool that they use is used to highlight statements in the aritcles and provide sources against the claims made in media. Q: could we have them annotate wiki articles? A: we could be we need to have a hackathon to create workflows for this sort of work.

Maybe we should use there tools in wiki contexts instead of the talk pages

We should create an initiative that translates climate articles like wikiproject medicine. This process is creating a simplified lede in international english and having Translators without Borders https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Medicine/Translation_task_force . This ensures that there's at least some reliable information in these language. Additionally most readers stop reading after the lede .

We have a large backlog of translated language that still isn't on wikipedia due to people not wanting to import into languages they can't read.

It is more common than not for institutions to have social media managers, but not wikipedians in residence even though they are so important for education outreach. It's a tough problem to solve as it's hard to find people who are knowlegable about wiki and the residence itself. Additionally science communicators are in such high demand so it's hard to get people to contribute to wiki.
- Q: who goes to the botanical gardens events?
