|abstract=Ten years ago, Katherine Panciera, Aaron Halfaker, and Loren Terveen published their research paper “Wikipedians are born, not made.” People who read this paper in 2009 learned that “the activity of Wikipedians and non-Wikipedian editors differs from the beginning”, that “the number of edits made in the first two days is a strong predictor of the probability that a new editor will become a Wikipedian”, and that “Wikipedians make higher quality edits than non-Wikipedian editors.” But most of all, we could learn that “Wikipedians are the essential core of the Wikipedia community.”

Re-reading this 10-year-old research paper today raises a number of questions:

* If Wikipedians are to be the essential core of the Wikipedia community, then has enough really been done to retain them?
* If only a very small fraction of the total population qualifies as natural-born Wikipedians – does our traditional way of doing outreach work, i.e. targeting the general public really make sense if our goal was to recruit long-term Wikipedians? What would it mean to re-think our outreach work?
* Where would we find natural-born Wikipedians, if we’d like to recruit them for Wikipedia?
* Which are the best ways of retaining members of our core community going forward?

The session will focus on answering questions like the ones listed above. Ideally, we’d have enough time at the end to discuss the main assumptions and statements of the talk.
Academics once held Wikipedia in low regard. Encyclopædia Britannica editors likened it to using a public restroom (McHenry, 2004). Faculty have banned students from using it in their classwork (Jaschik), and have for so long deterred each other from accessing it – while accessing it themselves – they have perhaps created a “negative feedback loop” surrounding its actual use (Jemielniak and Aibar). Their reasoning has long been that Wikipedia produces neither accurate nor reliable knowledge. To do so, the academy holds, a system must employ peer-review: established experts set forth a hypothesis, and other experts attempt to reproduce the results. The entire field of experts works together to confirm or deny theories by reproducing results and a reliable view of our world emerges. Compare this, say the academics, to publicly-reviewed knowledge, where no one can assure readers if an assertion on Wikipedia has been reviewed, nor if a reviewer has any relevant expertise.

But significant problems have emerged for the system of peer review as well. Brian Nosek, a professor of psychology at the University of Virginia, tracked the reproducibility of 100 articles published in the top three psychology journals and found that while 97% of the original studies found significant results, only 36% of replications found significant results (Nosek). In many instances replications could not repeat the results of the original study or suspected that the original study overstated the significance of the claims. Why? It has long been feared that since the academy awards novelty for promotion of its researchers, the more anonymous work of verifying a colleague’s research is devalued. And without reliable motivations to review a peer’s work, it seems that peer-reviewed knowledge also comes up short of its own standards.

This presentation seeks to look more closely at the system of public review, as found on Wikipedia, and more accurately portray how and when review occurs within the website, to what extent it is accurate, and whether the system as a whole fares better or worse than its counterpart peer review.
;Abstract: The ARL Wikidata Task Force, a group of research library professionals and Wikimedians, is identifying issues, barriers, educational needs, and resource requirements for libraries to participate in Wikidata and Wikibase in their uses and applications of linked open data locally. Linked Open Data in libraries has been somewhat of a niche (at times abstract) specialty and the Task Force members believe that Wikidata -- with its strong community globally and easy to use tools -- can help make it more of a mainstream, tangible activity for libraries to improve discovery of local or institutional assets. ARL and the Wikimedia Foundation are aligned on many values, including openness, barrier-free access to information, and knowledge equity. By October, the Task Force will have released a draft paper for public comment, and will present its findings. The panel of members of the Task Force will also discuss the uses and applications of Wikidata in library and archival discovery and in collaborative, community-engaged resource description.
;Abstract:

Wiki Loves Monuments is an international photo competition for monuments and historical sites, taking place every September in more than 40 countries around the world.

The United States has participated in Wiki Loves Monuments in 2012, 2013, 2016, and 2017. Last year's event (2017) was primarily organized by SuperHamster (Kevin Payravi) and Nikikana, during which over 8,000 photos of historical sites in the United States were uploaded by over 1,400 individuals (most of any other country that year). Of the 8,000+ images, over 1,200 (~15%) of them are currently being used on Wikimedia projects.

With this session, we will be reviewing the results of Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States and providing insights on the event in the US. With the highest number of participants in the world, we are in an interesting position with a lot of untapped potential. After the review, we will present on ideas and plans for the future, and ask for feedback and insights from participants. Topics for discussing the future include potential collaborations, adding monument data to Wikidata, the creation of new tools, outreach potential, how to retain contributors on the Commons, and more. As Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States is unique in that we accept photos of state-level and local-level historical sites (instead of just nationally-designated sites), there is a lot of potential for local outreach, as well as plenty of organizational effort needed to catalog all these sites on Wikidata.

If Wiki Loves Monuments in Canada and Mexico would like to join into this session and make it a review and discussion about Wiki Loves Monuments in North America, I'd be thrilled. I have yet to reach out to them but will do so soon.
Wikimedia District of Columbia is the recipient of $50,000 in support from the Knight Prototype Fund, an initiative of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Wikimedia DC will collaborate with the Smithsonian Institution on a project called the "Wiki Art Depiction Explorer", an effort to create an interface for museum visitors and other art enthusiasts to crowdsource metadata about visual depictions in museum artworks. Making this data more accurate and robust will allow further and deeper discovery of these works by anyone in the world. The project was created by three longtime Wikimedia DC volunteers: Andrew Lih, author of The Wikipedia Revolution, Effie Kapsalis, Chief of Content & Communications Strategy at the Smithsonian Institution Archives, and Robert Fernandez, member of the board of directors of Wikimedia DC. This presentation will discuss our ideas for this project, how the project will interact with Wikidata and other Wikimedia projects, and solicit community and expert feedback.
;Abstract:
A recent research article (summarized here) noted that many images are only used on only one language version of Wikipedia. This shows that sharing images between language projects could be an easy way to improve other-language Wikipedias. I've successfully shared images from my library's special collections with Japanese Wikipedia. I added several images of Japanese war banners to their Japanese counterparts, where many were retained and received more image views.

GLAM employees often upload images to Wikimedia Commons. After making sure the metadata and categories are accurate, sometimes it's not clear what the next step is. Tools that track image views can help uploaders understand which images are the most popular. I'll walk through how to use tools like GLAMorgan and GLAMorous to track views of categories of images hosted on Commons. I'll show how to use the tools to see how and where images are used, and where it might be productive to share images with other-language Wikipedia pages.
;Abstract: In this talk, I discuss the use of Wikidata in a graduate seminar at Vanderbilt University. During the spring semester of 2018, a colleague and I taught a course titled The Digital Flânuer: Mapping Twentieth-Century Berlin. The seminar combined discussion about the history, literature, and subcultures of Berlin with instruction in fundamental techniques of the digital humanities, including geospatial data analysis, querying Wikidata, text mining, 3D modeling, and network analysis. Out of this digital whirlwhind, Wikidata emerged as a favorite among students, several of whom drew on Wikidata for their final projects. In this presentation, I explore practical means for incorporating Wikidata into the humanities classroom, indicate areas of difficulty for students (e.g., incomplete or misclassified data, misleading SPARQL queries, and challenges with transforming the data into other formats), and propose possible improvements to the Wikidata query interface to improve its utility in the college and university classroom.
;Abstract: Currently there is no default guidance for anyone who coordinates a Wikimedia project that includes off-wiki outreach. There are models for fulfilling specialized roles, including for people who arrange Wikimedia partnerships with groups of students, organizations, and organizing general community meetups, but advice for these functions is separated and often people who would start a Wikipedia outreach project fail to find instructions which fit their need.

In this presentation I define a wiki ambassador as anyone who acts organizes online Wikimedia projects between the Wikimedia community and any group or organization off-wiki. I review the basics which I think anyone doing outreach should consider including in their program plans, including the following:
#Documenting the project on-wiki
#Seeking and noting community review in advance
#Tracking and reporting program outcomes to all stakeholders
#Browsing options for additional support, including training, partnerships, and Wikimedia community grants

I assert that the "wiki ambassador" is a point of contact for any outreach program and the person who manages all of these things. Attendees of this presentation will leave with basic understanding of the minimal recommendations for anyone organizing a Wikipedia outreach program of any kind. This presentation will be a deconstruction of the basics for anyone who already does Wikimedia outreach, but also an attempt at explaining the least complicated way to find success in sort of Wikipedia partnership including a one-day wiki event to an ongoing program over time.
Wikipedia users value the quality and stability of good and featured articles, but bringing articles to this status can be daunting. To demonstrate how quality article improvement can occur, this presentation will outline how a group of wikipedia users created and improved a set of articles that resulted in featured articles (FA), good articles (GA), plus Did you know? (DYK) and In the News (ITN) appearances. Throughout, there was a need to maintain the integrity of several biographies of living persons (BLPs) and update content constantly, sometimes live.

The quest of racehorse American Pharoah for the American Triple Crown 2015, then finishing the year by completing horse racing's first-ever "grand slam" by winning the Breeders' Cup Classic in the fall presented a unique opportunity to write quality wikipedia content while an event was unfolding. At the beginning, some articles were newly-created, others had existed for several years but required massive cleanup. A collegial and cooperative team that included regulars from WikiProject Horse racing and editors from outside the project worked together to develop several quality articles. Along the way, a deft hand was needed to maintain Wikipedia's standards on biographies of living persons (BLP) and handle controversies, such as those in the biography of the horse's "flamboyant and controversial" owner, Ahmed Zayat.

Attendees at this presentation will learn how quality articles on Wikipedia are developed, including FA-level verifiability, locating and citing reliable sources, formatting, citations, obtaining free-licensed images, and pulling together submissions for four different review processes (ITN, DYK, GA and FA).
;Abstract:

SUMMARY - How can we engage academics and other knowledge professionals in alternative ways to contribute expertise without requiring them to edit Wikipedia directly?

BACKGROUND - Wikipedia has a complicated relationship with subject-matter experts. As "the encyclopedia that anyone can edit", and one which operates by policies of "verifiability" and "no original research", its model precludes appeals to editors' personal epistemic authority. When people who have dedicated significant parts of their lives to the study of a particular topic try to contribute what they know to a Wikipedia article, it's easy to understand their confusion and/or frustration when their work is undone or criticized by pseudonymous or anonymous others -- editors who, we may assume, are not likely to have the same level of experience or credentials. It's a phenomenon that happens on a daily basis on Wikipedia and which aggrieved parties have even written about several times in popular publications.

Many academics, journalists, historians, GLAM professionals, and other subject-matter experts do contribute productively to Wikipedia, of course, but it requires a particular kind of patience beyond that demanded of most other editors simply because the social and professional structures they're socialized in weigh thoughts and opinions according to expertise and specialization. Furthermore, since many experts are unprepared for the kinds of challenges and interactions Wikipedia has in store for them, they may use their real name and worry that reverts and disagreements could have a negative impact on their professional reputation. Still, many Wikipedians and groups within the community routinely express that they wish more experts would contribute. Most would agree that expertise does have value on Wikipedia -- just not in some of the most obvious ways.

Since the beginning of the project, the way we have tried to engage new Wikipedians has been to encourage them to edit articles directly. The question we seek to address in this workshop is: How can we engage academics and other knowledge professionals in ways that allow them to contribute expertise without requiring them to edit articles directly?

FORMAT - The workshop will begin with short presentations which cover:
*an overview of the challenge
*past failures
*potential strategies (ways of selling the idea of contributing to Wikipedia, addressing concerns about "credit", lessening the time needed to get over the learning curve)
*alternative forms of contribution (article reviews, content gap analyses, expert consultant for a particular WikiProject)
*possibilities for mediated engagement (talk pages, templates, bots, off-wiki tools, audio or video commentary)

Most of the requested time, however, is for discussion. We would like to learn from and collaborate with the Wikipedians, Wikimedians, librarians, academics, teachers, journalists, curators, and others in attendance in the hope that we can cultivate ideas, develop strategies, and formulate some practicable ways forward.
;Abstract: The United States Department of Agriculture maintains a digitized collection of over 7,500 beautiful watercolors of fruits painted around the turn of the 20th century. These are public domain works that could provide valuable historical and scientific information—not to mention excellent illustrations for Wikipedia—but were largely unavailable to the public. When I found these images in February of 2015, I knew that I wanted to share them with as many people as possible.

:And in the months since discovering the Pomological Watercolor collection, I've come to truly love the paintings themselves. But it's also important to recognize that they stand for something much broader. We talk often about the value of the public domain to Wikipedia, and to our culture at large, but not as much about works and collections that are free from copyright restrictions but behind logistical or bureaucratic walls. The Pomological Watercolor collection is a great example of works that belong to all of us, but which, until quite recently, were not available for all of us to enjoy.

:Through a combination of public advocacy, a handful of Freedom of Information Act requests, and the support of a community built around uploading archives of media, I've been able to start to free the Pomological Watercolor collection to Wikimedia Commons. I wrote my first pywikibot program, and am in the final stages of my first Commons bot request process. It's been both a challenge and a joy to dig into this collection and get it out to the world, and I want to empower more people to similarly take the public domain into their own hands.
Many instructors in academia approach using Wikipedia in the classroom with apprehension or completely ban its use due to the fact that "anyone can edit Wikipedia". However, students as well as faculty often find themselves using Wikipedia to do basic research and learn more about a given topic. Instead of discouraging students from using Wikipedia, it is important to teach students how to best incorporate Wikipedia into their research. Learning how Wikipedia works and how to effectively use Wikipedia is a skill that students will be able to use outside of the classroom and take into the workplace.
This session will discuss how Wikipedia can be used to teach research and critical thinking skills by providing students will the tools necessary to evaluate Wikipedia articles. There are a variety of assignments, some of which only require part of a class session that can be used to teach students about Wikipedia. This includes designing assignments to assist students in understanding what makes a "good" Wikipedia article by having students review references listed and asking them to determine the creditability of sources used. It can also include asking students to review an article and discuss how well the topic is covered and if there are gaps, asking students to edit the article and thereby improve the quality of Wikipedia. Assignments can also take the form of looking at how information is presented in an online community driven website. Students can be tasked with reviewing the talk page and the history of the article to determine how the article was developed over time. By discussing what information was included in the first iteration of the article, students are able to see how an article can improve over time and see how edits from an active online community can result in a robust article on a given subject.
;Abstract: This presentation will examine debates about the value of academic criticism that are present in Wikipedia edit histories, highlighting moments where academic modes of literary criticism are embraced, rejected, or challenged by Wikipedia editors. I am interested in reading particular discussions about the credentials (or lack of credentials) and merits of critics who publish with academic publishers, literary journals, major newspapers and magazines, and born-digital contexts like blogs and social media when they are cited (and, at times, removed from or challenged) by Wikipedia editors. I became interested in this topic after examining the Wikipedia page of American poet John Ashbery and finding a contentious debate about particular literary scholars and public figures in the page’s edit history. Given the prominence of Wikipedia pages on literary subjects in search results and their use by a range of readers (students of various levels, scholars, as well as more general readers curious about particular authors), discussions over whose ideas about the value of literature are credible and authoritative (and whose voices should be silenced or removed from pages) have far-reaching implications and can shape large numbers of readers in implicit and explicit ways. I am interested in discussing how communities of literary scholars and educational institutions might pay more attention to Wikipedia pages and editors working on topics in their field, and I am also curious about how the editing community of Wikipedia views particular authors, publishers, institutions, and other sites of cultural production when its members are revising pages. Are there more opportunities for collaboration? Reasons to more closely monitor which individuals and groups are more frequently cited than others? I hope to address these and other questions by looking at particular edit histories and trends in citationality.
The Wikimedia Commons, one of the largest multimedia repositories of open-source content in the world, is an obvious connection point for GLAMs and the world of open source: GLAMs would like more people to discover the treasures they keep in their collections, and the open source community would like high-quality images, recordings and metadata to improve, reuse and share with the world. An incentive for GLAMs to share their content is the open source community's ability to improve existing content: paintings and photographs have been restored, scanned documents have been transcribed and incorporated into textbooks, illustrations in scanned materials have been automatically extracted and shared, and metadata can be added and improved. Some GLAMs have turned to crowdsourcing as a way to classify illustrations or transcribe handwritten text. With its deep ties to Wikipedia, probably the best known open source project in the world, the Commons is perfectly placed to act as a intermediary for such content, with GLAMs using metadata-aware uploaders such as the GLAMwiki Toolset to contribute their content to the Commons, and then to develop custom software to download improved content and metadata back from the Commons into their local databases.

In the last two years, I've worked on two projects that work towards this goal. Last year, I undertook a Google Summer of Code project to build the DBpedia Commons, an extension of the DBpedia project to extract RDF-based data from the content associated with files in the Commons. In my presentation, I will describe how DBpedia Commons extracts metadata from the Commons, what sort of metadata it is able to extract, and how to download that for your own use.

Two years ago, I worked with the Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL) to develop a Commons template for storing the metadata they provide (a precursor to the much better customization available through the GLAMwiki Toolkit), and our plan for setting up a continuous flow of metadata from the BHL to the Commons and back again. I will also describe how I would implement such a system today, using DBpedia's infrastructure and ontologies to create a data model that would let users on the Commons and databases at the BHL speak the same language and share categorical, descriptive and numerical data back and forth.

In the future, the Structured Data project and Commons-Wikidata integration will make such workflows easy to set up, but my presentation will provide information on what GLAMs are trying to do today, describe some software that is already available to set up such workflows, and what additional features the Commons and Structured Data Projects should aim to provide to encourage mutually beneficial metadata collaborations between GLAMs and Wikipedia.
;Abstract:
This presentation will facilitate a discussion about an intensive, multi-semester project focused on using Wikipedia to better provide open access scholarly information on the work of Octavia E. Butler and her work. This project has served as a means for allowing students to engage with existing scholarship on Butler as well as gain relevant practice in writing collaboratively, both with each other in small groups and with the larger online communities of Wikipedia editors and science fiction fandom. The presentation will also review the impact that working on distinct types of research writing (collaborative, online encyclopedic entries versus individual thesis-based research papers) had on students’ understanding of Butler’s life and works as well as their engagement with the course material. At 2014’s WikiConference in NYC, we invited students from the early part of the project to present on their Wikipedia participation and one of their comments was: “‘This was the best experience of my life.” We will invite students to join us for this presentation as well.

Our methodology will be illustrated with examples from two English research paper classes which formed part of the Wikipedia Education program during the Spring 2014 and 2015 semesters alongside classes conducted at the CUNY Graduate Center, Barnard College, Harvard, Georgetown University, and NYU. Working in teams with Wikipedia editors, our students redrafted the Wikipedia article on Butler’s bestselling novels Fledgling and Kindred as well as the information on Octavia Butler’s biography.

Our presentation will not be solely limited to details of this project, and will touch upon issues of interest to educators interested in developing strategies to improve faculty outreach: how to conduct collaborative workshops and editathons with other departments and programs, and how to integrate librarians involved in information/digital literacy in the instructional process.
;Abstract: Over the course of the past four years, NARA has been deeply involved in the Wikipedia community—hosting editathons, uploading thousands of images, and developing best practices—but these activities did not take place in a vacuum. This panel brings together key practitioners from the National Archives' Office of Innovation, with the aim of contextualizing NARA's Wikipedia engagement as part of a broader institutional approach to promoting innovation, access, and openness. With an introduction by NARA's Chief Innovation Officer, each panelist will discuss a different project of note for encouraging open participation and public access to collections. The following are expected panelists and topics:

:* Pamela Wright, Chief Innovation Officer
:*:Introduction to Innovation at NARA (10 mins.)
:* Meredith Stewart, Management and Program Analyst:
:*:NARA's Citizen Archivist initiative and participatory catalog (8 mins.)
:* Dominic Byrd-McDevitt, Digital Content Specialist/Wikipedian in Residence
:*:National Archives catalog API and open data (8 mins.)
:* Dina Herbert, Innovation Hub Coordinator
:*:The Innovation Hub, NARA's citizen engagement space in Washington, D.C. (8 mins.)

:Each of the panelists has also been involved, to varying degrees, in NARA's work on Wikipedia. There will be many GLAM presentations at WikiConference USA, but by focusing on the interconnected projects of institutional advocates of Wikipedia, this panel seeks to provide a practical demonstration of how an organization can institutionalize Wikipedia engagement as an established program within a larger framework of mission-oriented innovation. Through these examples, we will discuss not just successes, but the challenges of fostering a Wikipedia-friendly ethos within an organization.
In recent years there has been a large discussion of systemic bias, what topics are not covered, on the English Wikipedia. The majority of those discussions have focused on what topic areas are less covered and very little work has been done to look at where the majority of articles reside, geographically. Using audited content, good articles and featured articles, as the data corpus, I am going to show where in North America has the highest density of high quality articles on the English Wikipedia and where is lacking.
How can educators prepare lesson plans that integrate online resources?

The first half of this workshop will be highly discussion-based, examining some relevant lesson plans. These will be posted a few days before the conference. Current students and teachers should find this interesting, as it will be a great way for people to share opinions on this topic.

-Subjects to use this for

-What resources do you need/want? (School computers, laptops, iPads, speed of WiFi, etc)

-How should students work? (Groups, partners, etc)

-Types of materials can teachers prepare to guide students

-Projects, quizzes and tests that can be used to track progress

-Teacher responsibility to keep students "on track"

-How to keep consistent pacing

During the second half, we'll create (or adapt) a lesson plan based on our discussion. This is primarily directed at educators, but anyone who teaches or trains people might be interested in seeing ways to do this.
I will post some templates you can use, though attendees should feel free to bring old lesson plans that they adapt to include online-based curricula.
I have been a contributor to Wikipedia for over eight years, and have over 90,000 edits. These contributions have been wide and varied, and as the edit count suggests, a large percentage of that volume comes from maintenance of Wikipedia, doing the curatorial work that keeps the project organized and running, not necessarily focusing on the content that I care about (or motivating myself to share our immense amount of public knowledge with the world). In the last few years, a part of me has noted that I was “selling” the community as an outreach person, more than I was contributing. Enter #100WikiDays : I discovered the project by off chance, from Asaf Bartov through my outreach work, and I can confidently say that in the last couple months I have returned as a contributor!

What is #100Wikidays? Vassia Atanassova, User:Spiritia started the #100WikiDays challenge this past spring, where editors from many different global language communities, challenge themselves to contribute 1 new Wikipedia article a day for 100 days. The challenge is mildly sadistic, with a very basic set of rules:
*No missed days and no catch-ups.
*No preparation of articles in advance.
*But also: Ignore All Rules
In my presentation, I am going to reflect on my own experience joining the activity: both its powerful revitalization of my contributions as a volunteer, my return to creating new articles, and the broader power I see in having more self-empowering frameworks for editors to feel more engaged in our Wikipedia community of practice. In doing so, I will also do a self reflexive of my own experiences as a Wikipedia editor, exploring how content creation, content development and the experience of developing and choosing new topics to work on create a personalize experience on Wikipedia. I will also, self reflexively explore
;Abstract:
GLAM-Wiki has a long history in the United States, with early conversations with the Smithsonian and the first paid Wikipedian in Residence at the Children’s Museum in Indianapolis. However, in the United States much of GLAM-Wiki activity has slowed: initial enthusiasm was high, and some areas continue to be very active in developing GLAM activities, such as New York and D.C., but in the past couple years very few “new” organizations are committing to larger collaborations with the U.S. Wikimedia. This presentation focuses on reflecting on my experience as project manager of the Wikimedia Foundation’s Wikipedia Library program, a member of the US GLAM-Wiki Consortium and as a volunteer engaged in working with multiple different cultural heritage orgs (most recently, the Beach Museum at Kansas State University, and the William Blake Archive).

In part, my presentation argues that the slow expansion of GLAM-Wiki outside of regions like D.C. and New York is largely because of our dependence on the lone “Wikipedian in Residence” that can do everything, from outreach, to training staff, to developing capacity. In the American context, this isn’t good enough: we need to develop better support systems in the United States to expand the impact of this powerful concept in the American context. I will explore some models I see growing out of the libraries community that are “multiplying the impact” of interested Wikipedians engaging cultural heritage organizations, including Hebrew Wikipedia’s librarian staffed Reference Desk, the Wikipedia Library Interns Pilot, Wikipedia Visiting Scholars, the Catalan Public library network models, and presenting at professional conferences.

But, also, I argue that in the United States, we need to be more proactive about empowering editors in our local communities, and telling them “yes, you can go talk to x organization and represent the entire Wikimedia community”. Frequently, when I meet United States Editors who haven’t attended an in person event, they don’t have an awareness of just that: that they represent the movement and that we can and should empower them. We have one of the largest editor bases in the North America: we need to imagine new and powerful ways to empower them!
;Abstract:
Over the past four years I have taught three semesters of a Junior Year Writing course that requires students to write extensive articles on Wikipedia in lieu of traditional papers (as well as assisting in implementing Wikipedia-based assignments in three other courses). I have received outstandingly positive feedback for these classes, resulting in multiple teaching awards for a required class that, taught traditionally, most students find “boring.”

Integrating Wikipedia-based assignments in lieu of traditional papers does a few things at once: 1) it creates new ways for the students to understand ideas about the creation of knowledge and of collective intelligence, 2) it creates a space where students begin to question the validity and verifiability of information, and 3) students are invested in, excited about, and care about the quality of a public project, ensuring their critical engagement with not only the subject matter but their daily lives.

Most of challenges to Writing with Wikipedia are technical, and many of them can be managed with proper support. For the most part students tend to pick up the technical side of Wikipedia editing quickly, but take longer to understand the community behind Wikipedia, as well as fully understanding how to write neutrally. This is true also of faculty members as well, but in the opposite – they often “understand” the community and neutral writing, but have issues with the technical side of Wikipedia, and need more robust training.

Teaching Writing with Wikipedia is a strong pedagogical tool, as it forces students to cite properly, practice peer review, participate in “public” writing, and learn proper formatting of a literature review. As Wikipedia articles evolve over time, students continuously return to their articles, learning proper editing skills and understanding better the writing process. The quality of the work at the end of these classes has been, in my experience, outstanding.

This presentation will overview the benefits of teaching with Wikipedia, particularly in regards to college-level writing, discuss some potential challenges to teaching with Wikipedia, and discuss how to get started implementing Wikipedia in classrooms both personally as well as how to encourage faculty to implement Wikipedia-based assignments. The intent of this presentation is to illustrate some of the successes and challenges that I have had at the University of Massachusetts, as well as encourage more integration of Wikipedia assignments, particularly with the assistance of the Wikipedia Education foundation.
;Abstract: While it is clear that Wikipedia wishes to attract academics and experts in addition to general editors, there are a variety of obstacles for mainstream scholars when they consider engaging in the project, publicly. Mentoring a class in WP editing can be frowned upon, and may be daunting for faculty with limited experience and time. Even for motivated faculty editors with substantial publishing experience, it is difficult to navigate unfamiliar waters of WP where authority does not rest with the individual, reliability is based on unfamiliar rules, content ownership is anathema, and personal reputation can be threatened. To help academic editors realize the intellectual and personal rewards of editing WP, a place for them to get started would help. Some of the conditions of such an environment will be suggested.
