;Abstract ''(at least 300 words to describe your proposal)'':I'm the Wikipedia-in-Residence at UC Berkeley. Although WiR postings have been common in other cultural institutions, I am the first US-based Wikimedian to occupy such a post at a University. My job duties have effectively ended up being a hybridization of the traditional campus ambassador and the traditional Wikipedian-in-Residence. I work directly with US Education Program classes and stsudents in a way that is far more intensive than is traditional for campus ambassadors, and start my work with classes earlier in the semester than is typical. I was involved with course and assignment design before the courses launched to the tune of dozens of hours, and have tried to ensure that my courses avoid all of the common pitfalls that education program courses fall in to. Besides for working directly with courses, I have also been interfacing with some of the GLAM's that UC Berkeley runs in order to try to get historically significant holding released that may be at Berkeley and nowhere else - the early development of the free speech movement, etc. In order to ensure that my result are as replicable as possible, I will be meticulously documenting everything I do (including course design) and releasing a CC-by-SA report at the end of the semester that covers what we did, what what well, went went poorly, and suggested changes for future iterations of similar programs. Besides for those two main tracks, I'm also just available on campus as a general resource about Wikipedia to any interested person, and have started dozens of conversations that are headed towards interesting collaborations. I've also been in significant contact with the press over my position, and intend to talk (briefly) about my insights regarding best practices in dealing with press in Wikimedia-based settings, whether as a volunteer or as someone who has some paid position affiliated with the movement.

I'm intending my presentation to basically be a summing up of my experiences over the course of the semester (some of which haven't happened yet :),) as well as highlighting key takeaways for the benefit of future and current program leaders.

;Length of presentation/talk (see [[Submissions#Presentation Types|Presentation Types]] for lengths of different presentation types): Including a Q&A section, I could easily fill 75 minutes. I could also easily adopt downwards to fit in to part of a larger session as needed, although I would greatly prefer to have at least a 35 minute session.
Former Community Manager at Wikia

;Abstract ''(at least 300 words to describe your proposal)'':
My name is Trella Rath and I've been a Community Manager with a focus on wikis for about 3 years now. Many people don't know where to start when it comes to managing a wiki community, or how to oversee willing volunteers. I will share with you my experience of managing wiki communities as well as working with fellow editors and admins. While working at Wikia, I spent a great deal of time working very closely with wiki communities and helped them to grow and thrive. From small budding communities just starting off, to larger communities that are damaged and in need of healing

Wait, but what exactly is a Community Manager? Community Managers help drive a community and keep it on track. In the wiki realm, many admins or bureaucrats take on this role of leadership. Community Managers come and all shapes and sizes, as the term is loosely defined depending on depending on the person or organization you speak with.

During this presentation I'll speak about what it means to manage a wiki community and go over a few basic skills for bringing your community to life. Some of the topics I plan to cover include:
* Creating Successful Community Guidelines
* Attracting New Editors
* Identifying Admins and Volunteers
* Promoting Your Project

This talk is designed for anyone who is looking to get a new wiki project off the ground, new to Community Management or is just curious about the foundations of online community building.

This is based off of a talk I gave internally to Wikia. I do not have the slides available at this time.
Have you ever wanted to add to [http://seealso.hatnote.com/ the existing collection of Wikipedia-based visualizations], go digging in wiki-related metadata in search of pattern, or just grab one piece of information from each page in a category, but weren't sure where to start? This talk will take us beyond the in-browser wikipages that we know and love and will introduce the MediaWiki web API: a powerful tool that lets users interact with Wikimedia's immense and intricately connected collections of data and that lets us take advantage of the programmable web to monitor usage, categorize trends, and learn more about how users tend to work.

We'll discuss how APIs facilitate computer-to-computer communication, introduce MediaWiki's web API and exploratory tools such as API:Sandbox, and explore some of the uses of web API client libraries. Finally, we'll take a look at some of the fascinating data visualizations that have been created with data fetched with the Wikipedia API. Whether or not you write your own code, you'll learn more about MediaWiki's capabilities and ways you can get data beyond the pages you normally see. If you want to learn more, come to the companion workshop, and we'll dig into the API ourselves!
;Abstract ''(at least 300 words to describe your proposal)'':
This panel will be a discussion of changes in contemporary higher education (which, for shorthand, we are calling the “Era of the MOOC”) and Wikipedia’s role, actual or potential, positive or negative. It aims to introduce Wikipedians to some of the “big picture” of these changes, and their implications. This session will also be an opportunity to bring together Wikipedians, academics, instructional designers and educational technologists. Invited panelists include Frank Schulenburg (Wiki Education Foundation), Jon Beasley-Murray (University of British Columbia), Jim Groom (University of Mary Washington), and George Haines (Hofstra University).

Higher Education, and particularly higher education budgets, are under increasing stress as the public demands efficiency and value for money in the face of what often seem to be spiralling costs and a consequent debt burden on young graduates. At the same time, commercial, for-profit enterprises, from the University of Phoenix to providers of so-called Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), are challenging our ideas of what is involved in the college experience. Universities are trying to respond, often with the hope that there is some kind of technological panacea out there, most likely online.
While there is nothing wrong with efficiency or value for money per se, many people within higher education worry about the impact of these changes in the long (and even short) term. And while academia has traditionally viewed Wikipedia with some suspicion and vice versa (for a variety of reasons, some good, some bad), fundamentally this is an area in which Wikipedia and academia share many of the same values. Wikipedians and academics both tend to believe in the goal of a universal education that goes beyond any financial considerations. Both aspire to a fundamentally democratic ethos. And both are now hard-pressed by for-profit interests, if in somewhat different ways.

This session aims to initiate a conversation between Wikipedians and academics, mediated by educational technologists, about the role of technology in education, its pitfalls and its potential, the politics of the so-called “free knowledge movement,” and the possibilities for (further and more meaningful) collaboration in the future.
