It will also detail efforts to continue the momentum for Open advocacy despite a challenging political environment in the United States. The conversation will explore the opportunities that an open system for communicating research and scholarship create to improve Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects, how Wikimedians can better connect with allies in the broader open movement, and ways Wikimedians can directly contribute to opening up the primary material upon which Wiki projects are built.
;Abstract: This started out as an exploratory contact between Wikimedia DC and Wikimedia Levant for possibilities for English/Levant collaboration, but when we found out the Arabic Wikipedia would be celebrating their 13th birthday, it quickly mushroomed into my first edit-a-thon, the Arabic Wikipedia Day Edit-a-thon, held on Saturday July 29, and an impromptu WikiProject Arabic. From the Jordanians we learned about using Wikidata to construct a cross-language lua-based dynamic table of "articles to start" using Q-numbers, and from our Wikisource contact we learned how to upload a document from PDF to WikiSource, and after several false starts involving Internet Archive, were able to upload one. So our event spanned English Wikipedia, Arabic Wikipedia, WikiData, Commons, and WikiSource, all in 3 hours. This presentation focuses on the uses of Wikidata and Wikisource in the editathon environment, and gets you past a few of the pitfalls you might experience if you try this for the first time.
Have you ever had someone ask you how Wikipedia works, or why they cannot add an article about themselves? Have you ever wanted to tell the public about a project or invite people to join? Have you tried to summarize the Wikimedia movement in 20 words or less?

Communicating the Wikimedia movement can be hard, but it can also be AWESOME. We are here to talk about some practical ways to talk about Wikipedia, the Wikimedia projects, and the movement with journalists, the public, new volunteers, and anyone else who might be new (or even not so new!) to the movement.

We will go over what kinds of things you can achieve with good communications and messaging, some practices that have worked well for us (the Wikimedia Foundation Communications department), challenges around how to communicate a global movement with every person in the world, and brainstorm how we might be able to do more together in the world of media and public relations.

We will also make a survey available beforehand so people thinking about attending this session can share their ideas and requests with us in advance.
;Abstract: Wikipedia is a social, historical archive of information on any topic. The more important a particular topic is to the world, and the greater its longevity, the more likely it will receive updates and improved citations over a continuous span of time. In the current political climate of the United States, attempts to shut down authoritative news sources, government agencies, and activist movements can inspire use Wikipedia as the vehicle to present the truth. One can achieve this mission through the use of social media and uploading Creative Commons-licensed images to Wikimedia Commons as well as traditional editing and creation of articles. St. Cloud State University librarian and Wikipedian Rachel Wexelbaum will discuss the "Wiki Loves Pride" movement, how she is building the global Wiki Loves Pride community through Twitter, and how international collaboration is taking place to provide an idealized archive of truth.
;Abstract:
Openness has become part of the imaginary of our contemporary technoscapes (Appadurai 1990), a buzzword, and a cause for many social movements and communities. For this reason, we need to approach to the concept of Openness from a critical perspective. On the one hand, openness can be easily adopted by corporate companies as a mechanism to obtain value from data. On the other, can be understood as a critical cultural praxis (Negri 2004, Lessig 2006) where knowledge and information are conceived as commons (Ostrom 1990).

These competing paradigms need to be analyzed and understood by governments, educational institutions and teachers in order to design public policies, education models, incorporate emerging pedagogies and develop competencies among students. If we agree on considering knowledge as commons, as teachers we need to promote an educative culture and pedagogical practices that don't contribute to the concentration of power and capital through knowledge. (Ricaurte 2016)

Wikipedia understands knowledge as commons (Hess & Ostrom 2011) and believes every single person is a potential contributor to enrich this common resource. Our challenge for the next years is to understand how to protect, thrive and share knowledge commons in the digital era. Because of this, we propose through a case study of two learning environments, Wikipedia and Google, to carry out an analysis that allows us to compare these two models of knowledge society materialization and pedagogical decisions. We chose these two learning environments because they constitute the most representative cases of two opposed paradigms in the Internet universe.

This session aims to contribute to the debate about open knowledge production and education. The attendees will gain a) a deep understanding of the main elements of the actual knowledge production system, b) a theoretical framework about knowledge commons, c) insight into learning environments and pedagogical perspectives, d) a practical case study of Wikipedia as part of the paradigm of the Open Knowledge Society.
For the past three years I have been sharing Kiwix (an offline wikipedia reader ) with schools, computer training facilities and students in Senegal and other West and North African countries. I have also been contacting a few education oriented NGOs who are also working in West Africa to share this wonderful program with them. A lot of school teachers, like myself, volunteer their time with these NGOs, and I was quite surprised to find out that they plan to use Kiwix in their own school as well!
* https://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/Education/Newsletter/September_2016/West_African_schools_will_test_Kiwix,_the_offline_Wikipedia_reader

Switzerland, just like the other West European countries, or Canada, or the US, has a well developed education system with computers in most classrooms. At least that is what they say. Most government officials in charge of education will say that every school is equipped with up to date computers, and a wide access to all sorts of educational resources on the Internet. The real story is somewhat different, especially when you are not in the major cities…

For the moment, I see two main reasons for using Kiwix, or another offline Wikipedia reader, in our schools:
* The school has very poor or no access to the Internet. This can be due to a variety of reasons from budgetary considerations or the physical availability of Internet connections.
* Teachers wish to give their students access to Wikipedia but do not want them to waste time on other attention grabbing web sites they usually surf on.
* Teachers may also wish to limit the communication between students while enabling them to use the encyclopedic resources in Wikipedia.

The presentation will be followed by a discussion period.
It is often argued that paid editors do not damage Wikipedia; that all we need to do is enforce our normal rules, such as NPOV, and any problems will disappear. This presentation will show the extensive damage that paid editors cause, making the above argument untenable.

A mere list of the horrors caused by paid editors would be terribly depressing. To lighten up the presentation, some of the absurdities passed off by paid editors will be highlighted. Topics include:
*A brief recap of the classic paid editing scandals (with links to existing material). Note that these are all ongoing problems
**The Morning77 scandal (Fall 2013)
**The Orange Moody scandal
**The Bell Pottinger scandal

*Examples of absurd articles on Wikipedia that could only have been written by paid (or COI) editors, e.g.
**the article about a specific NY City coffee truck
**about a mysterious all-white food truck that never discloses its location
**about the made-to-order lingerie business which has a single seamstress (who won an award)
**about a donut shop "chain" with an article written just after it went bankrupt. It is now down to a single (you guessed it) donut truck

*The million dollar ripoff company Banc De Binary (as I wrote up in the Signpost, with updates) and other financial ripoffs with formerly pro-company articles in Wikipedia
**Articles on other players in the binary industry (most now deleted)
**The retail forex industry in Wikipedia which encourages speculation on foreign exchange rates. One CEO was quoted by the Wall Street Journal (approx.) "15% of our customers make money." But what happened to the business? the article? the customers? and to the other 50+ articles on companies in the business.

*Medical articles (this is deadly serious business, but I'll try to find one that is funny)
*Summary on the damage done by paid editors
What will attendees take away from this session?

Attendees will understand that paid editors damage Wikipedia in ways that are often horrific, and sometime incredibly funny (in a black-humor way)
;Abstract: Wiki Loves Monuments is an annual international photo competition where participants capture cultural heritage monuments and upload their photographs to the Wikimedia Commons. In 2016, Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States was brought back for the first time in several years. The results were great, both internationally and for the United States. For the United States, over 11,000 photos of U.S. sites were uploaded (6th highest) by over 1,700 contributors (virtually tied with India for 1st).

:The purpose of this submission is to present on the re-emergence of Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States: how it was run, the results, and why these results occurred. In particular focus will be the change from only accepting photos of nationally recognized sites, to recognizing sites designated on state, local, and organizational levels, as well as a focus on the high number of participants. ;Abstract: The WMF's Anti-Harassment Tools team is exploring ways to empower admins to moderate problematic users without resorting to an entire site ban or block. English Wikipedia (and many other wikis) have organized communities policies around page and topic bans, which are formal prohibitions assigned to problematic users, prohibiting them from editing a specific page or collection of pages.
These bans are socially enforced and are easy to skirt. We are exploring the idea of building software inside MediaWiki to actually enforce these bans and need user input to help guide our feature designs!
This presentation will give a historical and technical overview of the Article Alerts system used by the English Wikipedia's community. This system is used to monitor important discussions (such as deletion discussions, request for comments, move requests, ...) surrounding particular topics (such as chemistry, physics, video games, women in science, ...). I will cover what motivated me to originally propose the Article Alert system, as well as its design philosophy, technical implementation, and other complementary systems. The talk should be accessible and interesting to all audiences, regardless of technical background, but will be most interesting to people interested in Wikipedian history, in implementing a similar system in other languages (or their own wikis).

;Abstract:

:Wikipedia student organizations at colleges and universities present a unique opportunity for student Wikipedians to engage their higher-education setting and perform effective Wikimedia outreach. A student organization can reach students and faculty alike, and oftentimes has access to resources and a network that a conventional independent Wikimedia organization does not have.

:This presentation will first briefly cover the history of Wikipedia-related student organizations in the higher education setting, including efforts in Michigan, New York, and China. We'll then cover the history of Wikipedia Connection, a student organization at the Ohio State University that was created in Spring of 2015. The student-run organization, with the support of library faculty, has hosted edit-a-thons, weekly workshops, a photo event, and more on-campus.

:We'll cover some of the pros of running a Wikipedia-related student organization, including:
:* Connecting existing young editors to the broader Wikimedia community.
:* Introducing students and faculty to editing Wikipedia and understanding how it functions ("is Wikipedia reliable?").
:* Supporting Wikipedia Education program classrooms.
:* Connecting librarians, academics, and other university staff to the project and community.
:* Bettering students' research skills through their participation on Wikipedia.

:Wikipedia-related student organizations can be difficult to sustain and success, with Wikipedia Connection probably being the most long-lived and successful student organizations in the United States. In addition to sharing the type of work the student organization engages in, we'd also like to generalize what Wikipedia Connection's organizers have learned from running their Wikipedia student organizations, and describe the key ways to remain sustainable. Some of the key topics that will be covered are:
:* What are the necessary ingredients to run a successful Wikipedia student club?
:* What are the key challenges to running a Wikipedia student organization, compared to other Wikimedia groups and affiliates?
:* How does a student organization attract and retain student editors?
:* What sort of resources does a university student organization have that other Wikimedia affiliates may not have access to?
:* What are the differences between running an edit-a-thon for students vs. running a general public edit-a-thon?
: Implicit bias is a problem for Wikipedia. Implicit bias affects us all, and we don't even recognize it. It can't be changed, but something can be done. Come learn how to become aware of your implicit bias, and how you can make progress toward changing the unchangeable.

:Humans are imperfect tools, but we are using them to create an encyclopedia. Being a contributor to Wikipedia requires editing responsibly, thinking about the whole movement, and considering the stakeholders: fellow contributors, the community, readers, and knowledge. Identifying the bias through which one views the world is challenging for every person, but a crucial act for contributors. Contributors encounter cultures, traditions, and social norms different than their own. This is where bias shows up. Implicit biases are always there, creeping into our work. In this session, learn how to connect with implicit bias and discuss the impact of implicit bias on Wikipedia.
Harassment is an ongoing problem on Wikipedia, particularly for editors from marginalized groups, including women, people of color, and members of the LGBT+ community. Vandalism of user pages can be particularly damaging to such people. An idea was submitted to the Spring 2016 Inspire campaign to protect user pages by default from editing by anonymous and new editors. The proposal gained significant support, and was developed into a Request for Comment, which reached consensus for semi-protection. The user page protection was implemented by means of an edit filter on the English Wikipedia in November 2016.

This presentation will discuss the motivation for and thoughts behind this process from the viewpoint of the proposer, Funcrunch, a member of multiple marginalized groups. Comparisons will be drawn to harassment in other Internet communities. Arguments for and against user page protection will be analyzed, and examples of attempted vandalism that have been prevented by the edit filter will be examined.
;Abstract:

How can we, as a movement, gain more editors? How can we get more women to contribute to Wikipedia? How can we close the gender gap and increase content on WIkimedia projects about women? In my time as the Wikipedian in Residence for Gender Equity at West Virginia University Libraries, I’ve had the opportunity to work within academia to find new and innovative ways to answer some of these questions. One way we can work together towards solving some of these problems is through various service models. The service model I propose is one in which credit or community service is given to the volunteer in return for their participation in a Wikimedia project. The specific model I’ve found to have measurable impact is with sorority women on college campuses in the United States. Four universities within the U.S. have now agreed to give sorority students the required community service credit for editing Wikipedia articles about women. This is a great success for the students, the university, and our movement as the students gain necessary service credit, the university gains a cohort of young writers who are socially minded, and the Wikimedia community gains new editors who are interested in adding content about women. I believe that this sorority service model can be replicated with the support of Wikimedians. However, this model could easily be replicated in many different ways beyond this specific model to increase participation in Wikimedia projects. I seek to explore these topics and possibilities within this presentation after detailing my findings and measures of success.
This presentation will serve as an introspective look into my first year as the Wikipedian in Residence for Gender Equity at West Virginia University Libraries. I want to impart upon the audience my experiences in this position, what has been successful, lessons learned, and my vision as I begin my second year in this role. I believe that positions such as this can be replicated successfully to focus on the difficult conversations regarding gender and other forms of diversity on Wikipedia, and on college campuses as well.

It is also significant to note, that the creation and welcoming of this position signaled an interesting moment in academia in which social justice, and institutional cultural change were marked as important signifiers of potential future growth. I plan to explore the ways in which cultural change of this nature can continue throughout academia and Wikipedia alike, to support diversity and open access issues.

I will also discuss my integration into the culture of Wikipedia as viewed from an outsider with ties to academia. As a Wikipedian in Residence without any prior editing experience before the start of this position, I want to share the perspective I’ve gained during this first year, and elaborate on successful strategies for fostering collaboration with those who are new to Wikipedia. I will emphasize the positives to be gained from incorporating individuals with various backgrounds to learn and collaborate with existing, longstanding Wikipedia community members. I am specifically interested in discussing how community activists and academics alike can use Wikipedia, in concert with longstanding Wikipedia members, to promote global scholarship and share their areas of interest.

The gender gap and content gender gap - the dearth of female editors and women-focused content on the English Wikipedia - have been the subjects of much documentation and debate. When addressing these discrepancies, we also need to address representation of transgender women and men, as well as people with non-binary gender identities such as agender, bigender, and genderqueer.

While the "transgender tipping point" has brought more public awareness of transgender people, mainstream narratives are shaped by cisgender (non-transgender) people. Trans and non-binary people can be discouraged from editing on Wikipedia by frequent disruptive editing and vandalism of gender-related pages, as well as unclear policies on deadnaming and correct gendering of trans people in articles. Cisgender voices dominate debates on these issues, with accusations of bias and political correctness. This creates an unwelcoming environment for trans participation.

The prominence of Wikipedia articles in search engine results means that many people learn about transgender issues through Wikipedia, so it is imperative that this information be as accurate and respectful as possible. To address the transgender gap, more understanding of trans and non-binary identities is needed. This presentation will provide a brief overview of these identities, show examples of disruptive editing and debates over trans issues, and suggest options for improving the experience of trans editors and coverage of issues that concern us.
;Abstract: Wikipedia student organizations at colleges and universities present a unique opportunity for student Wikipedians to engage their higher-education setting and perform effective Wikimedia outreach. A student organization can reach students and faculty alike, and oftentimes has access to resources and a network that a conventional independent Wikimedia organization does not have.

:This presentation will first cover the history of Wikipedia Connection, a student organization at Ohio State University that was created in Spring of 2015. The student-run organization, with faculty support, has hosted edit-a-thons, weekly workshops, a photo event, and more on-campus.

:The next part of the presentation will generalize what Wikipedia Connection's organizers have learned from running Wikipedia student organizations. Some of the key topics that will be covered are:
:* What are the necessary ingredients to run a successful Wikipedia student club?
:* What sort of resources does a university student organization have that other Wikimedia affiliates may not have access to?
:* What are the differences between running an edit-a-thon for students vs. running a general public edit-a-thon?
;Abstract:

Queer history/theory has been written out of history almost completely. Popular history textbooks don't seem to acknowledge LGBT communities even existed until the Stonewall Riots, and even then it's viewed as a "fringe" group as opposed to a vital force in history. While editing Abraham Lincoln's page to include evidence of his queer sexuality may involve conjecture, many other cases have physical, source-able proof that has gone unacknowledged. As more and more young people turn to Wikipedia for information, study help, or casual reading, it is imperative to use this critical opportunity to ensure that another generation does not grow up believing that queer communities simply did not exist in history.

In this presentation, I will do the following:

1.) Provide a brief introduction to the history of LBGT erasure, the violence this causes, and the benefits of remedying this issue.

2.) Present resources for those wishing to participate in this re-write.

3.) Lay the foundation for LGBT "edit-a-thons," including a list of potential topics for editing.

4.) Propose various methods to involve the community and widen the contributor base in relation to this area.

The presentation will be brief, as it is intended as a jumping-off point--a foundation upon which attendees, as leaders in their communities, can build and spread the word. Following the presentation, a webpage will be available to the larger community with the information necessary to begin work on the project. My goal is to establish the editable aspect of Wikipedia as a necessity for the LGBT community, and a chance to research and reclaim the past that "traditional" history has chosen to erase. I aim to inspire the queer community to collaborate on this large-scale project so that our own history is accurate, accessible, and for the first time--true.
;Abstract:Like other technological and social projects worldwide, Wikipedia presents a gender gap with respect to the participation of women. It has been previously shown that only 1 in 10 editors of Wikipedia is a woman. It is the community builds Wikipedia; therefore it is necessary for the community to include a diverse group of people so that the content is representative of everyone. Even though there isn’t data about the Wikipedia users in Mexico, we know that of the top 5 contributors to Wikipedia in Spanish in 2016 so far, none are women. A few years ago, there has been a movement in Wikimedia to fight this gender gap; put previous experiences and their application in our contexts have been complicated. For these reasons, Wikimedia México along with other local social groups joined to increase the participation of women in Wikipedia and created the Editatona. An Editatona is a women-only editathon where women are given the space to edit articles on Wikipedia that are relevant to them. The topics range from science, technology, history, human rights, etc. Since its inception in 2015, the Editatonas have been successful in Mexico and have also been a model that has grown and has been replicated in other countries such as Brazil, Ecuador, Spain, Perú, and Uruguay, among others. In this talk we want to show what we have learned, the challenges, and other elements that could be helpful and inspiring for other projects with similar goals.
;Abstract: This study considered the implications of using a basic rubric for source evaluation in Wikipedia and its effect on perceptions of the authority and quality of the online encyclopedia. Around sixty students in a large public university in the United States were given a brief survey, which asked them to talk about their considerations for choosing a source for their research papers and whether or not Wikipedia was an acceptable choice. Students were asked to examine an existing article on Internet Privacy in the context of a hypothetical research assignment. Half of the group was provided a source evaluation rubric, which describes basic information literacy source criteria. The students who had the rubric had a higher perception of the authority of Wikipedia than the students who had no guide for evaluating the source. This indicates that while students continue to be warned by their faculty against using Wikipedia for their research papers, they actually find it helpful and appropriate for certain academic purposes. Moreover, students who use a rubric in Wikipedia to evaluate sources seem better able to articulate why a source is useful (or not). This presentation will discuss the results of the study, as well as wider considerations for navigating the use of Wikipedia in the college classroom.
;Abstract: After 15 years, Wikipedia is becoming a trusted, valued resource in higher education. With over 40 million articles and 15 billion page views a month, Wikipedia extends unprecedented information and knowledge access to every corner of the globe. In the next 15 years and beyond, how can academic and research libraries support the further advancement and growth of Wikipedia? As a research library dean who actively promotes and advocates for the use of Wikipedia and has hired a Wikipedian in Residence for Gender Equity, I plan to discuss the future of Wikipedia in academic libraries. In this presentation, I will discuss how I came to understand the value of Wikipedia in academic libraries, the process of hiring and advocating for a Wikipedian in Residence, the reasoning behind hesitancy about this process, and how librarians can advocate for the creation of these positions in their library systems to those in leadership positions. Throughout my presentation, I will stress the need for effective culture change within libraries, Wikipedia, and academia, that is necessary for Wikipedia initiatives to expand. I hope to impress upon those in the audience the viability and future of Wikipedia in libraries and college classrooms and the multitude of opportunities for Wikipedia and libraries to collaborate under the shared goal of free access to content.
