Wikidata is increasingly being used in Wikipedia, in many interesting ways through use of the Lua integration provided by Wikidata's Wikibase software.

In this presentation, some examples will be highlighted from English Wikipedia, as well as other language Wikipedia projects and sister projects. Some examples include infoboxes that use Wikidata (Infobox telescope, WikiProject US Roads, ...). Other types of templates that make use of Wikidata include the Authority Control template, and the WikidataCheck template, which is used to compare template parameters against data on Wikidata, for possible discrepencies and errors. It is now also possible create charts, using the Graph extension and data from Wikidata. (e.g. population charts for a city or country)

In addition to using data from a page's connected Wikidata item, arbitrary access is being rolled out to all Wikipedias (and sister projects) to allow using any item on any page. (e.g. the item about France on the article about Paris) How can this be used and what are its limitations?

Some questions that I will try to answer and discuss:

* What possibilities are there in the future for better, easier use of Wikidata on Wikipedia?

* What is the status of being able to query Wikidata and to automate lists on Wikipedia?

* What the development team is working on to help improve monitoring of Wikidata changes and tools to help with improving quality of data in Wikidata?

* Other questions you have about Wikidata?
This tutorial will be an ambitious survey of Wikidata for hackers and humans, as taught by an experienced volunteer.

Attendees will learn:

* What people have been building with Wikidata. We'll briefly cover what kinds of projects people have developed atop Wikidata in not only Wikipedia, but also external projects for biology, history, libraries, archives, museums and beyond. Get ideas for how Wikidata can enhance and extend your project's reach.

[[File:Wikidata_statement.svg|thumb|right|300px|We'll cover Wikidata basics and beyond.]]
* Wikidata vocabulary and conventions. Learn the lingo: statements, items, properties, qualifiers, references. In addition to covering those elements of the Wikidata data model, I will also introduce you to useful everyday properties and basic membership properties like instance of (P31), subclass of (P279), and part of (P361).

* How to edit Wikidata. This isn't your grandpa's wiki. Wikidata's editing interface is not a hairball of prose and square brackets like the classic Wikipedia, nor a more familiar WSIWYG like VisualEditor. Wikidata's editing UI is casual-user-friendly but has some novel features. We will collaboratively edit an example Wikidata item to get you up to speed.

* How to find things and where to get help: Handy tricks in the search UI, where different community discussions occur, how to do background research on Wikidata topics, how to reach Wikidata developers and the director.

* Advanced querying. Find all humans. Find all genes. Find all municipalities in the United States with a population between 5,000 and 20,000. Find all European nobility who died in a hunting accident. Find all kinds of footwear. We'll use tools from Magnus Manske as well as SPARQL endpoints.

* Programming with the Wikidata API. A quick demo using Python.

* How to use the Wikidata RDF and OWL exports. Explore the project's structured data dumps in Protege, the browser of the Semantic Web.

[[File:St GaudensShaw Mem.jpg|thumb|right|300px|Wikidata can represent why things happen.]]

* The promise and peril of ontologies. What was the cause of the American Civil War? Can a cat be a mayor? Is Harry Potter a human? Meaning matters, and bit of linguistic precision in Wikidata can open opportunities for automatically answering common, non-trivial questions.

* What Wikidata means for the future of human knowledge. Clay Shirky popped a bubble with his 2003 essay The Semantic Web, Syllogism, and Worldview. Over a decade thereafter, that vision of Tim Berners-Lee continues to be a distant prospect. In the meantime, Wikipedia's human editor base has been in decline since March 2007. This section will take a look at where Wikidata fits in historical context, how it can mitigate declining editor engagement in Wikipedia, and how it can address Shirky's critiques while becoming the centralized knowledge base and reasoning platform for the Semantic Web.

The Wikimedia Commons, one of the largest multimedia repositories of open-source content in the world, is an obvious connection point for GLAMs and the world of open source: GLAMs would like more people to discover the treasures they keep in their collections, and the open source community would like high-quality images, recordings and metadata to improve, reuse and share with the world. An incentive for GLAMs to share their content is the open source community's ability to improve existing content: paintings and photographs have been restored, scanned documents have been transcribed and incorporated into textbooks, illustrations in scanned materials have been automatically extracted and shared, and metadata can be added and improved. Some GLAMs have turned to crowdsourcing as a way to classify illustrations or transcribe handwritten text. With its deep ties to Wikipedia, probably the best known open-access project in the world, the Commons is perfectly placed to act as a intermediary for such content, with GLAMs using metadata-aware uploaders such as the GLAMwiki Toolset to contribute their content to the Commons, and then to develop custom software to download improved content and metadata back from the Commons into their local databases.

In the last two years, I've worked on two projects that work towards this goal. Last year, I undertook a Google Summer of Code project to build the DBpedia Commons, an extension of the DBpedia project to extract RDF-based data from the content associated with files in the Commons. In my presentation, I will describe how DBpedia Commons extracts metadata from the Commons, what sort of metadata it is able to extract, and how to download that for your own use.

Two years ago, I worked with the Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL) to develop a Commons template for storing the metadata they provide (a precursor to the much better customization available through the GLAMwiki Toolkit), and our plan for setting up a continuous flow of metadata from the BHL to the Commons and back again. I will also describe how I would implement such a system today, using DBpedia's infrastructure and ontologies to create a data model that would let users on the Commons and BHL's databases speak the same language and share categorical, descriptive and numerical data back and forth.

In the future, the Structured Data project and Commons-Wikidata integration will make such workflows easy to set up, but my presentation will provide information on what GLAMs are trying to do today, describe some software that is already available to set up such workflows, and what additional features the Commons and Structured Data Projects should aim to provide to encourage mutually beneficial metadata collaborations between GLAMs and Wikipedia.
;Abstract:
GLAM-Wiki has a long history in the United States, with early conversations with the Smithsonian and the first paid Wikipedian in Residence at the Children’s Museum in Indianapolis. However, in the United States much of GLAM-Wiki activity has slowed: initial enthusiasm was high, and some areas continue to be very active in developing GLAM activities, such as New York and D.C., but in the past couple years very few “new” organizations are committing to larger collaborations with the U.S. Wikimedia. This presentation focuses on reflecting on my experience as project manager of the Wikimedia Foundation’s Wikipedia Library program, a member of the US GLAM-Wiki Consortium and as a volunteer engaged in working with multiple different cultural heritage orgs (most recently, the Beach Museum at Kansas State University, and the William Blake Archive).

In part, my presentation argues that the slow expansion of GLAM-Wiki outside of regions like D.C. and New York is largely because of our dependence on the lone “Wikipedian in Residence” that can do everything, from outreach, to training staff, to developing capacity. In the American context, this isn’t good enough: we need to develop better support systems in the United States to expand the impact of this powerful concept in the American context. I will explore some models I see growing out of the libraries community that are “multiplying the impact” of interested Wikipedians engaging cultural heritage organizations, including Hebrew Wikipedia’s librarian staffed Reference Desk, the Wikipedia Library Interns Pilot, Wikipedia Visiting Scholars, the Catalan Public library network models, and presenting at professional conferences.

But, also, I argue that in the United States, we need to be more proactive about empowering editors in our local communities, and telling them “yes, you can go talk to x organization and represent the entire Wikimedia community”. Frequently, when I meet United States Editors who haven’t attended an in person event, they don’t have an awareness of just that: that they represent the movement and that we can and should empower them. We have one of the largest editor bases in the North America: we need to imagine new and powerful ways to empower them!
;Abstract: Over the course of the past four years, NARA has been deeply involved in the Wikipedia community—hosting editathons, uploading thousands of images, and developing best practices—but these activities did not take place in a vacuum. This panel brings together key practitioners from the National Archives' Office of Innovation, with the aim of contextualizing NARA's Wikipedia engagement as part of a broader institutional approach to promoting innovation, access, and openness. With an introduction by NARA's Chief Innovation Officer, each panelist will discuss a different project of note for encouraging open participation and public access to collections. The following are expected panelists and topics:

:* Pamela Wright, Chief Innovation Officer
:*:Introduction to Innovation at NARA (10 mins.)
:* Andrew Wilson, Director, Digital Engagement Division:
:*:NARA's Citizen Archivist initiative and participatory catalog (8 mins.)
:* Dominic Byrd-McDevitt, Digital Content Specialist/Wikipedian in Residence
:*:National Archives catalog API and open data (8 mins.)
:* Darren Cole, Web and Social Media Branch
:*:The Innovation Hub, NARA's citizen engagement space in Washington, D.C. (8 mins.)

:Each of the panelists has also been involved, to varying degrees, in NARA's work on Wikipedia. There will be many GLAM presentations at WikiConference USA, but by focusing on the interconnected projects of institutional advocates of Wikipedia, this panel seeks to provide a practical demonstration of how an organization can institutionalize Wikipedia engagement as an established program within a larger framework of mission-oriented innovation. Through these examples, we will discuss not just successes, but the challenges of fostering a Wikipedia-friendly ethos within an organization.
;Abstract:
The Wiki Education Foundation in a San Francisco-based nonprofit that connects higher education resources in the USA and Canada to the publishing power of Wikipedia.

Collectively, we've helped more than 14,000 students in 729 courses contribute more than 33,000 articles to Wikipedia. In this presentation, we'll share learnings from that experience. We'll tailor our presentation chiefly to Wikipedia editors, educators, librarians, museum staff and academics.

Since our presentation to WikiConference USA 2014 in New York City, we've grown from a staff of three to a staff of 14. In that year, we've also expanded our flagship Classroom Program, taken on administration of the Wikipedia Visiting Scholars program in the USA and Canada, and developed independent tools and materials to support our program participants as they improve Wikipedia.

In a series of lightning talks, our staff will offer quick (and energetic!) presentations about their work. Each speaker will share 10 slides in 20 seconds each. In those slides, we will explore:

* Engagement with university instructors, including support tools, outreach, and the refinement of our resources through experience and feedback.
* The life cycle of a student article, from concept planning to library research and their final contributions, including examples of student work.
* Our targeted outreach efforts with like-minded organizations.
* Our engagement with student editors through club activities and field trips.
* New pilots and programs, such as partnerships, Wikipedia Visiting Scholars.
* Our campaigns, such as our gender gap work and the 2016 Year of Science.
* Our outreach work, from community engagement to fundraising efforts.

Each talk will be delivered in a flash format emphasizing a quick, visually-focused presentation to provide a fast, lively but thoughtful overview of learnings, achievements and challenges from our past experiences.

Likewise, we will apply a 20-second flash Q&A round at the end of the talk, to encourage participation and focused questions (and answers).

;Length of presentation: 30 minutes

;Special schedule requests: Though we are available to present any day, it might be useful to present on Friday in case attendees have questions about our work throughout the weekend.

;Will you attend WikiConference USA if your submission is not accepted?: Yes
The GLAM-Wiki US Consortium was officially launched as a project right here in DC during Wikimania 2012 with a goal of cultivating a national network of institutions and individuals fostering capacity and skills within both the Wikimedia and GLAM professional communities. Three years on, this presentation from members of the inaugural advisory board will introduce the Consortium to newcomers interested in bridging Wikimedia and cultural institutions and provide a report on exciting developments in the past year and plans for the coming year.

:While we are still in the planning and development phase, this year has seen the formation of an active advisory board, our first in-person meeting, and the establishment of a mission and goals. These efforts are being supported by leadership and funding from both the National Archives and Wikimedia DC, which are jointly undertaking a program to promote best practices and increased capacity in the GLAM-Wiki movement. This presentation will also be an open forum to discuss the Consortium's scope and direction, gauge interest, and learn how to join/volunteer.

;Abstract:

SUMMARY - How can we engage academics and other knowledge professionals in alternative ways to contribute expertise without requiring them to edit Wikipedia directly?

BACKGROUND - Wikipedia has a complicated relationship with subject-matter experts. As "the encyclopedia that anyone can edit", and one which operates by policies of "verifiability" and "no original research", its model precludes appeals to editors' personal epistemic authority. When people who have dedicated significant parts of their lives to the study of a particular topic try to contribute what they know to a Wikipedia article, it's easy to understand their confusion and/or frustration when their work is undone or criticized by pseudonymous or anonymous others -- editors who, we may assume, are not likely to have the same level of experience or credentials. It's a phenomenon that happens on a daily basis on Wikipedia and which aggrieved parties have even written about several times in popular publications.

Many academics, journalists, historians, GLAM professionals, and other subject-matter experts do contribute productively to Wikipedia, of course, but it requires a particular kind of patience beyond that demanded of most other editors simply because the social and professional structures they're socialized in weigh thoughts and opinions according to expertise and specialization. Furthermore, since many experts are unprepared for the kinds of challenges and interactions Wikipedia has in store for them, they may use their real name and worry that reverts and disagreements could have a negative impact on their professional reputation. Still, many Wikipedians and groups within the community routinely express that they wish more experts would contribute. Most would agree that expertise does have value on Wikipedia -- just not in some of the most obvious ways.

Since the beginning of the project, the way we have tried to engage new Wikipedians has been to encourage them to edit articles directly. The question we seek to address in this workshop is: How can we engage academics and other knowledge professionals in ways that allow them to contribute expertise without requiring them to edit articles directly?

FORMAT - The workshop will begin with short presentations which cover:
*an overview of the challenge
*past failures
*potential strategies (ways of selling the idea of contributing to Wikipedia, addressing concerns about "credit", lessening the time needed to get over the learning curve)
*alternative forms of contribution (article reviews, content gap analyses, expert consultant for a particular WikiProject)
*possibilities for mediated engagement (talk pages, templates, bots, off-wiki tools, audio or video commentary)

Most of the requested time, however, is for discussion. We would like to learn from and collaborate with the Wikipedians, Wikimedians, librarians, academics, teachers, journalists, curators, and others in attendance in the hope that we can cultivate ideas, develop strategies, and formulate some practicable ways forward.

Welcome to the FAQ for WikiConference USA! If you have questions not listed here, feel free to email us.

General Information
What is WikiConference USA?
WikiConference USA is the first national Wikimedia conference of its kind in the United States. The conference will be held on May 30 – June 1, 2014 at New York Law School, located in Tribeca district of Manhattan, New York City. WikiConference USA’s program will be devoted to topics concerning the Wikimedia movement in the United States, as well as related topics of free culture and digital rights.
WikiConference USA will feature a diverse array of conference offerings such as keynotes, presentations, panels, and workshop sessions; provide a lounge space and break areas for conference attendees to gather and mingle; and host an unconference day for attendees to design their own schedule and engage with each other around common interests.

What will happen at the conference?
At any given time, there will be multiple presentations given, which may be lectures, panels, workshops, or interactive demonstrations. If you do not want to attend a scheduled presentation then you can go to the chill lounge and do Wikipedia with other people.

How much does the conference cost?
WikiConference USA is free to attend. Registration is here: http://wikiconferenceusa.org/wiki/Registration.

We do welcome donations, however! A donation of $20 or more will get you an official conference t-shirt!

Who should attend WikiConference USA?
This conference is open to everyone, but is particularly geared for those who have an interest in Wikipedia, the Wikimedia movement, open knowledge, free culture, and/or free culture. A primary goal of the conference is to bring together those with a diversity of experiences and expertises.
Any active contributor to a Wikimedia project and/or Wikimedia volunteer in any other capacity, from anywhere in the United States, is considered eligible. Participants in other free knowledge, free software, collaborative and/or educational initiatives are also encouraged to apply.

Do I have to be an Wikipedia editor to attend WikiConference USA?
You do not have to be a Wikipedia editor to attend. New contributors and those not yet contributing, but interested in becoming an editor are as welcome as well.

We invite newcomers to experience The Wikipedia Adventure, a beginner’s introduction to Wikipedia.

Is the conference just for English Wikipedia?
This conference targets Wikipedians in the United States, but anyone is welcome attend, particularly, people interested in Wikipedia/Wikimedia from all over North America.

The conference will be conducted in English, but those editing other language Wikipedias are welcomed to attend.

Do I need to register for the conference in order to attend?
We ask that attendees register in advance to facilitate planning.

Those planning to attend should plan their travel arrangements and accommodations as soon as possible, since New York City is major tourist attraction. Even expensive hotels can be sold out months well before a planned visit.

Who can I contact about bringing a large group?
Please contact wikicon@wikimedianyc.org if you want to bring a group.

What is the hashtag to be used for social media?
The hashtag for WikiConference USA 2014 is: #wikiconusa.

Venue Information
How do I get to the conference venue?
Please visit New York Law School’s website for directions and general information.

Is the Conference venue compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act requirements?
The Law School is accessible to individuals in wheelchairs and those with mobility impairments. If you require specific accommodations such as the removal of a stationary seat in a classroom or event center, please contact wikicon@wikimedianyc.org.

All restrooms in 185 West Broadway are wheelchair accessible.

Will there be food at the conference?
Yes! A light breakfast and a sandwich lunch will be served during the first two days of the conference. Water, coffee, and other beverages will also be served. Traditional New York style pizza will be served on the third day of the conference.

Who do I contact for special dietary restrictions?
Please contact wikicon@wikimedianyc.org if you have any special dietary restrictions. We will try and accommodate your needs.

Will there be WiFi available at the conference?
Yes.

Will the conference be recorded and livestreamed?
We have plans to record the major sessions for the conference. More details soon.

Is there a code of conduct for the conference?
The Conference will be a friendly, supportive, and accommodating space for everyone. Please see our Friendly Space Policy for appropriate conference conduct.

Accommodations
Where can I stay near the conference?
There is a list of cheap places, to stay such as hostels, that are either close to the conference venue, or are easy for transportation using mass transit. However, note that the subway station nearest the venue (Fulton Street station on the #1 train) is NOT handicap accessible.

Some suggestions for venues include the following:
*Hostel International New York City, less than $50 per night, and the most recommended option for being the best value

The cheap accommodations are all taken! Where can I find an inexpensive hotel?
Consider visiting the Wikivoyage guide to New York City for suggestions.

I found a cheap hostel but on the map it seems far away; should I stay there?
Check Google Maps for travel times. Many people in New York City have daily commutes which are one hour each way or longer, and traveling on the subway is part of local culture.

Attendees visiting from elsewhere are advised to stay in New York City, near a subway line, and as close as reasonable when considering the available options and one’s own budget.

Scholarships
How do I apply for a scholarship to attend the conference?
See the scholarship page and submit the application to the scholarship committee.

How do I know if I qualify for a scholarship?
See the scholarships page for more details, but in general, have some history of participation in a Wikimedia project and be ready to describe that to the scholarship committee.

Conference Program and Schedule
What should I do if I have an idea for a workshop or panel?
Propose it! There are multiple conference tracks and the conference is being organized so that attendees of the conference can present to each other. We invite you to be creative with your proposals and welcome proposals for workshop, panels, case-studies, group editing and tech trainings, and other formats you can think of!
Kosboothttps://wikiconference.org/index.php?title=Submissions:2014/Bridging_conversations_with_the_Humanities&diff=561Submissions:2014/Bridging conversations with the Humanities2014-05-19T18:19:50Z
Kosboot: /* Interested attendees */

;Abstract (at least 300 words to describe your proposal): The humanities are increasingly relying on digital spaces to interact with the public through the w:en:digital humanities, and one of the largest impact spaces for that interaction is Wikipedia. However, despite calls by scholars for deliberate academic curation of humanities content, like that by digital humanist and American historian Roy Rozenwig, there has been very little active participation from English speaking humanists in Wikimedia projects. Unlike other academic fields which rely on more scientific methods that require analysis and digitally oriented development, and thus often use digital methods, most traditionally trained humanists do not have strong digital literacy skills. Moreover, digital humanities scholars who do have those skills and have tried to apply them to Wikipedia, often turn towards analyzing individual Wikipedia articles or creating reference sources distinct from Wikipedia, rather then actively shaping the community's presentation of their field of knowledge. In my talk I will first posit some of the reasons for the gap in humanist contributions, and propose ways that the community can alter some of its methodology developed in the GLAM-Wiki community and Education Program to actively involve Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects in humanities and digital humanities conversations. This talk builds on my research with w:en:User:Wadewitz on the place of historiography within Wikipedia (paper soon to be published), as well as the various outreach activities I have completed in both the Education Program and GLAM-Wiki community, in project like w:en:WP:Blake. Following the talk, I will facilitate an open conversations where we address and reflect on various other methods for building humanities conversations, including encouraging active research around humanities topics on Wikipedia, structuring Wikipedia Education assignments around humanist goals, and providing greater fit within the digital humanities.
;Abstract (at least 300 words to describe your proposal): The humanities are increasingly relying on digital spaces to interact with the public through the w:en:digital humanities, and one of the largest impact spaces for that interaction is Wikipedia. This talk builds on my research with w:en:User:Wadewitz on the place of historiography within Wikipedia (paper soon to be published), as well as the various outreach activities I have completed in both the Education Program and GLAM-Wiki community, in project like w:en:WP:Blake. ;Abstract (at least 300 words to describe your proposal):

Over the years, cultural heritage institutions like galleries, libraries, archives, and museums have produced a wealth of data. A significant portion of that data has been devoted to describing the people and organizations responsible for creating information resources. In library parlance, this work is known as "authority control"—essentially the process of establishing and maintaining an official ("authorized") record for an entity in order to uniquely identify it.

The Remixing Archival Metadata Project (RAMP) editor is an open-source tool for generating authority records for the people and organizations associated with archival and special collections. The RAMP editor is built around two metadata formats used primarily by archivists: Encoded Archival Description (EAD) and Encoded Archival Context–Corporate Bodies, Persons, and Families (EAC-CPF). Whereas EAD is used to encode information about collections themselves, EAC-CPF is used to encode information about their social context: the people, organizations, and families represented in archival collections. The RAMP editor leverages EAC-CPF as a data exchange format, letting users take existing metadata, enhance it, and then republish it to the English Wikipedia through its API.

This skill-building workshop will empower participants to creatively repurpose metadata drawn from one community of practice (that of libraries and archives) and reformat it for another community of practice (that of Wikipedia). As a global, ubiquitous platform, Wikipedia can serve as a tool for curating public information about the people and organizations represented in archival and special collections—and as a platform for connecting with user communities outside the context of a cultural heritage institution’s own holdings. At the same time, Wikipedia itself stands to benefit from the high-quality data and curatorial attention to detail that librarians, archivists, and others have worked to develop over time.

The workshop will cover:

# Installation of the tool. Participants are encouraged (but not required) to bring a laptop computer if possible.
# Working with EAC-CPF and creating basic EAC-CPF records.
# Creating stub- or start-class Wikipedia pages using metadata from libraries and archives.
# Strategies for translating existing metadata from the world of GLAM to the world of Wikipedia. We will review licensing issues and provide a model for addressing them.
# A model workflow for implementation and further ideas for using EAC-CPF data, such as end-user displays and visualizations.

;Abstract (at least 300 words to describe your proposal): For as long as they've been aware of each other, the Wikipedia community and the public relations and marketing (or "marcom") industry have always viewed the other somewhat warily. For volunteer Wikipedians, the goals of PR seems at best an uncomfortable fit with building an encyclopedia. For communications professionals, when Wikipedia gets something wrong, especially about companies, fixing it isn't always so easy.

:From the original "Conflict of interest" guideline to the expression of Jimmy Wales' "bright line" recommendation, from attempts at banning paid editing to new efforts to find areas for cooperation, this is also a debate Wikipedia has long had with itself. While community consensus is hard to come by, and often driven by bad news like the revelations about companies such as Bell Pottinger and Wiki-PR, some progress toward understanding has been made in recent years. Controversial as the topic may be, a significant breakthrough is more possible than ever, and if that's to happen, it will begin with conversations like this one.

:This panel brings together three individuals: Andrew Lih (American University), Michael Bassik (Burson-Marsteller) and William Beutler (Beutler Ink) sharing their views, respectively as a veteran member and observer of the Wikipedia community, as an executive at a major communications agency, and as someone with a foot planted firmly in both worlds.

:During this panel, they will contribute their impressions of how Wikipedia is viewed by those in the PR industry, what events have led to the current circumstances, how Wikipedia's policies and guidelines are interpreted by communications professionals, how journalism plays a large role in shaping the status quo, and how the Wikipedia community might work toward a better situation. In particular, the panelists will recount their views of a roundtable discussion featuring members of both communities, held earlier this year at Donovan House in Washington, DC.
Have you ever wanted to add to the existing collection of Wikipedia-based visualizations, go digging in wiki-related metadata in search of pattern, or just grab one piece of information from each page in a category, but weren't sure where to start? This talk will take us beyond the in-browser wikipages that we know and love and will introduce the MediaWiki web API: a powerful tool that lets users interact with Wikimedia's immense and intricately connected collections of data and that lets us take advantage of the programmable web to monitor usage, categorize trends, and learn more about how users tend to work.

We'll discuss how APIs facilitate computer-to-computer communication, introduce MediaWiki's web API and exploratory tools such as API:Sandbox, and explore some of the uses of web API client libraries. Finally, we'll take a look at some of the fascinating data visualizations that have been created with data fetched with the Wikipedia API. Whether or not you write your own code, you'll learn more about MediaWiki's capabilities and ways you can get data beyond the pages you normally see. If you want to learn more, come to the companion workshop, and we'll dig into the API ourselves!
;Abstract (at least 300 words to describe your proposal):

Are there new/better ways to leverage interested chapters, GLAMs, universities, tech non-profits, etc. to stimulate Wikimedia's growth in mutually beneficial ways? I would like to facilitate a group discussion on developing new innovative models for inviting or sustaining participation in Wikimedia-related projects through partnerships with or allied external or community organizations. This will be a more open-ended and interactive session than most, but here is the hook: by the end of the session, if we can come up with a role which the National Archives could pilot and offer to Wikimedians, I will make it happen.

Most "Wikipedians in Residence" (the dominant participation model for partnerships) have been required to work full-time, have some skills in communication/outreach, event planning, community relations, copyright, and technical matters. That is, the institution brings a single expert Wikipedian in-house to organize all of their Wikipedia engagement. This model is not broadly appealing or applicable enough for all Wikipedians or cultural/academic institutions. It is time for new thinking, and I would like to facilitate a brainstorming session where we come up with new ideas. I plan to set the scene by giving examples of various participation models for context (Wikipedian in Residence, Wikipedia Affiliate, Campus Wikipedian, Campus/Online Ambassador, E-Volunteer, others?) and then open the floor to suggestions.

Questions we might try to answer:

* Would we like to see institutions facilitate Wikimedia content contributions through their own official volunteer programs? Internships?
* What sort of incentives are most meaningful to the community? (Formal recognition, academic credit, job reference, professional mentorship... Also, are any of these distasteful to the community?)
* Would expanding these sorts of external affiliations be a good thing in general? How would we handle potential conflicts of interest? Does the community need to be involved in vetting or certifying opportunities or candidates?
* What about Wikimedia-affiliated organizations (i.e. chapters/Wikimedia Foundation)? Do they have a role to play in offering these sorts of opportunities?
* What about broader community roles, like a WikiProject organizer or a national Wikipedia Loves Libraries coordinator?

And, finally, can we write a concrete proposal that an organization could implement after the WikiConference USA? I want to go beyond the normal case study or and actually break new ground!
;Abstract: Since the launch of the Wikipedia Loves Libraries campaign in 2011, New York cultural heritage institutions have embraced Wikipedia as a means to connect their patrons to the world, and the world to their collections. This panel will explore how different types of libraries engage with Wikipedia. Case study lightning talks will be presented by individuals engaging in Wikipedia projects in 4 areas of librarianship: the academic library, the public library, the private cultural library, and the museum library. Each case study will offer insight into the symbiotic relationship between reference materials, the institutions that provide access, and Wikipedia.

At any given time there will be multiple presentations given, which may be lectures, panels, workshops, or interactive demonstrations.

Please see our Friendly Space Policy for appropriate conference conduct. Outside the conference in other designated parts of New York City any sort of behavior is acceptable.

Many people in New York City are willing to accept daily commutes which are one hour each way, and traveling on the subway is part of local culture.
