You are welcome to add yourself to the list below with topics you'd like to present on. Adding your name and a timeslot below serves as a "noticeboard announcement" for your activity and does not guarantee you the space at that time. The room is available on a first-come-first-served basis.

Unconference
We will have workshop session space available in Executive Board Room on first floor. Please note that this room only has a capacity of 30 people. In addition, there is no AV, translation or web streaming ability offered during Unconference sessions.

Except we allow that for bots and tools. If there's a single maintainer that doesn't share their source code, when they disappear and it breaks, it often has to be recreated from scratch. Given that some of these are effectively mandatory for the health and success of Wikipedia, it's ludicrous too! So here's a wild idea - let's forbid any bot from being approved if it doesn't have at least 2 maintainers. And we'll apply the same to web tools hosted on Toolforge.

An introduction will briefly discuss the advantages in adopting such a policy and how it might work practically. Ideally the roundtable would discuss whether this is a good idea, what potential rebuttals would be, and how to actually implement such a radical shift in wiki policy. I would also be fine giving this as a straight lecture presentation.
|abstract=Getting your code deployed to Wikimedia production can be hard. If you're not familiar with the requirements or who to ask for help, you can spend a lot of time developing something, only to get a very quick no when you try to get it deployed. It's demotivating and disheartening and wastes everyone's time!

But it really doesn't have to be that way. Getting code deployed to Wikimedia sites, even for volunteers, can actually be quite straightforward. This talk will walk through a project's lifecycle: 1) conceiving an idea 2) initial prototyping and development 3) refinement 4) formal reviews 5) deployment 6) maintenance 7) sunset. We will look at multiple case studies of deployments that went smoothly and were boring (a good thing!) and some that did not.

The intended audience for this talk is both developers (i.e. programmers) and people with ideas/product managers (non-programmers). We will discuss some specific technical requirements and restrictions, but will aim to avoid specific code things or jargon to keep it as accessible as possible.

Time permitting, we can do a lightning round evaluation of people's ideas and how to move forward on them (if reasonable). Otherwise people can find me afterwards.

Sister projects are the unsung heroes of Wikipedia's success. Disputes between inclusionists and deletionists led to the creation of Wiktionary, Wikibooks, and more, fueling new contributions to the sum of human knowledge while reinforcing Wikipedia's culture. OpenStreetMap is no stranger to deletion debates. Nascent sister projects like OpenHistoricalMap offer an outlet for more mapping, creating a more vibrant community than a fork ever could. As always, the hard part is starting from scratch. How can we learn from Wikimedia's experience with sister projects to build a similar ecosystem?

OpenStreetMap started 18 years ago with a blank canvas and the ambition to become the best map of the world. All we could do in the beginning was create: draw all the roads, houses, businesses, lakes and forests. Now, 18 years in, OSM looks “done” in a lot of places. Our responsibility now shifts from creating to maintaining—but not everywhere at once, or at the same pace. Jennings and Martijn uncover the fascinating and perhaps unexpected dynamics of a map in its teenage years by first looking at global trends and then diving deeper into the vast community maintaining the map in North America

This talk investigates the challenges of establishing pathways for academic contributors to edit Wikipedia. While there is powerful alignment in the educational missions of the Wikimedia Foundation with those of the academic humanities, tensions still exist between the Wikipedia and scholarly community, fostering distrust and burnout from scholars. This talk will investigate the contextual background of these tensions as understood by the CCCC Wikipedia Initiative and provide useful pathways for fostering understanding between Wikipedia and scholarly values.

In October 2022, Niantic publicly announced using OpenStreetMap to update its popular mobile game, Pokemon GO! The use of OSM data for PoGO has long been known by players and OSM contributors alike. In the past, this has meant accidental (or intentional) vandalism by well-meaning (and sometimes not so well-meaning) players. Let's look at how PoGO is using OSM data and ways to turn this pain point into a positive experience to encourage new contributors while preserving the integrity of our data.

Non-Profit land trusts have map needs. Docents want to lead a hike and describe where to meet for the monthly wildlife talk. Land trusts want to raise awareness via social media or for public presentations. Local educators want to get more students in the outdoors. A decent map stack & architecture for web, print & mobile can help solve all of these needs. We will discuss how we used FOSS4G tools to make a kiosk trailhead for the “Build Lebanon Trails” group in Lebanon, Oregon. The tools we used are OSM extracts, QGIS, and Cloud Optimized GeoTiff. See RobLabs.com/blt for print maps, live maps and maps for social media that we built for "Build Lebanon Trails".
|Collaborative Corridors to Address OSM Underrepresentation by Bill Wetherholt (recording)
US Highway corridors provide a collaborative springboard to connect vested OSM interests across underrepresented regions. US-40 offered a link between Fall 2022 mapping courses in the Department of Geography at Frostburg State University in Frostburg, Maryland and the Department of Computer Science, Information Systems and Engineering Technology at PennWest California in California, Pennsylvania. This talk explores filling in the map along the seventy miles of US-40 separating the two Appalachian universities and provides a blueprint for others interested in similar endeavors.
The WikiCredibility Grants Initiative (WikiCred), a project of Hacks/Hackers, is pleased to announce the launch of its 2022-2023 grant cycle. Applicants are invited to submit proposals seeking funding for tools, projects, initiatives, or events that explore ways to improve the credibility of Wikimedia projects.
The WMF has invited affiliates to propose larger organizations, called Hubs. A Hub might help support many small affiliates, and it might take on a larger multi-year visionary roles such as developing and supporting software, supporting Wikimedians in Residence, holding conferences, and systematically conducting training on a larger scale. A key element would be simply to apply for enough grant funding to sustain our existing user groups, chapters, and partnerships, and keep them out of financial or legal danger. Affiliates around the world have begun Hub pilot projects, generally funded by WMF grants. We can probably adopt their models to get started experimentally. To do this requires some consensus on what to try, and perhaps a grant application.
|abstract=Debian is a community-based free operating system built on top of Linux. All the Wikimedia wikis run on servers that use Debian for its technical excellence and shared values. In the spirit of recognizing "open knowledge allies", I'd like to shine a light on a project that contributes significantly to the Wikimedia technical infrastructure but receives very little recognition for doing so.

In this presentation, I will give a bit of background on the Debian project and examine similarities between Debian and Wikipedia (for example, both have a flat leadership structure that favors consensus building and do-ocracy). Then I'll talk about how the Wikimedia technical infrastructure uses Debian and what we gain from doing so. We'll finish by examining contribution and cross-pollination opportunities that exist from having Wikimedians contribute to Debian and vice-versa.
;Abstract:

Now that OpenStreetMap data is making its way into many more Wikipedia articles via Wikimedia Maps, it is more important than ever for Wikipedia editors to understand OpenStreetMap. This talk compares and contrasts the two projects’ content policies, countervandalism tools, and anti-abuse processes, especially in the context of geopolitical disputes, and proposes potential areas of collaboration between the projects.

Geopolitical disputes are among the most intractable content problems at Wikipedia, requiring permanent protection on many articles and frequent interventions by administrators and functionaries to moderate discussions and prevent abuse. One of the English Wikipedia’s most infamous edit wars was fought over the name of a city in Poland. Wikipedia strives to adhere to a neutral point of view that covers multiple notable viewpoints regardless of de facto or de jure status. Features built into MediaWiki enable the community to quickly spot and revert vandalism or edits lacking consensus.

As a fundamentally geospatial project, OpenStreetMap has had to address many of the same problem spots, but the project has taken a different approach than Wikipedia, due to the nature of mapmaking and a singular focus on data creation. Rather than a neutral point of view, the project prioritizes de facto status, though there is often additional data that can form the basis of map renderings that reflect alternative viewpoints. These policies can have an impact not only on the project itself but also on contributors on a personal level and data consumers on a professional level.

OpenStreetMap’s core software platform lacks built-in abuse filters or vandalism detection, so a sophisticated ecosystem of tools and bots has grown up around the project to solve these needs. Beyond international boundary disputes, there are many debates over more mundane details, such as road names and route number formats, that nevertheless are relevant to editors who focus on geographical articles.

This talk is related to my 2016 talk, “Be bold and edit the map”, but focuses more heavily on dispute resolution and countervandalism using recent examples from OpenStreetMap.

At the top of the Wikimedia power structure is the Technocracy. Those who control the servers and the code have ultimate powers over what happens on the Wikimedia projects. And most of the time they do a good job keeping the site up, implementing new features, fixing bugs, and so on. But sometimes, there's one issue that you keep running into, and you want someone to fix it. This talk is probably for you!

In this talk I’ll discuss different strategies to get developers to implement bugs and feature requests that bug you. I’ll talk about how to use Phabricator, mailing lists, IRC, and other community members to your advantage.

Phabricator: Wikimedia’s bug tracker can be a daunting place for newcomers who don’t understand all of the technical jargon. I’ll break down what goes into a good feature request, and how to evade the misleading “community consensus needed” label.

Mailing lists: While the wikis have moved away from mailing lists for project discussion, developers still use them as the place of record for important discussions. You can easily get the ear of most active developers, it’s important not to waste it.

I’ll go through examples of interactions that went well and resulted in features being implemented, and then some interactions that went poorly, and traps to avoid.

The goal of the talk is so that people feel comfortable approaching developers with their problems, and so that developers can work well with community members to resolve those problems.

My first experience with Wikimedia technical development was getting people to fix bugs I was running into as an administrator on the English Wikipedia. Some of my interactions went well, and others didn’t go as well. Now that I’m an active developer, I’d like to share my experience from both sides of the table and help improve everyone’s experience.

;Abstract:

Recently there have been a lot of changes to the Gadgets infrastructure and the MediaWiki ResourceLoader that powers it. Many of these changes were breaking ones that caused lots of popular scripts to stop working, even though they had worked fine without major changes for quite a few years.

There will be a short presentation that covers the major changes, why they were made, and how to take advantage of them. We'll also briefly touch on some of the technologies involved including jQuery, OOjs UI, and the resources provided like MediaWiki such as
mediawiki.api
and
mediawiki.util
.

Then there will be a workshop where we go through people's gadgets and personal user scripts, and fix them by:
* replacing deprecated code with new, modern code
* making sure they follow MediaWiki's coding conventions
* sharing with them with the world through pages like the user scripts directory.

;Length of presentation: 45-60 minutes

;Special schedule requests:

;Will you attend WikiConference USA if your submission is not accepted?: Yes
