;Abstract: Over the course of the past four years, NARA has been deeply involved in the Wikipedia community—hosting editathons, uploading thousands of images, and developing best practices—but these activities did not take place in a vacuum. This panel brings together key practitioners from the National Archives' Office of Innovation, with the aim of contextualizing NARA's Wikipedia engagement as part of a broader institutional approach to promoting innovation, access, and openness. With an introduction by NARA's Chief Innovation Officer, each panelist will discuss a different project of note for encouraging open participation and public access to collections. The following are expected panelists and topics:

:* Pamela Wright, Chief Innovation Officer
:*:Introduction to Innovation at NARA (10 mins.)
:* Andrew Wilson, Director, Digital Engagement Division:
:*:NARA's Citizen Archivist initiative and participatory catalog (8 mins.)
:* Dominic Byrd-McDevitt, Digital Content Specialist/Wikipedian in Residence
:*:National Archives catalog API and open data (8 mins.)
:* Darren Cole, Web and Social Media Branch
:*:The Innovation Hub, NARA's citizen engagement space in Washington, D.C. (8 mins.)

:Each of the panelists has also been involved, to varying degrees, in NARA's work on Wikipedia. There will be many GLAM presentations at WikiConference USA, but by focusing on the interconnected projects of institutional advocates of Wikipedia, this panel seeks to provide a practical demonstration of how an organization can institutionalize Wikipedia engagement as an established program within a larger framework of mission-oriented innovation. Through these examples, we will discuss not just successes, but the challenges of fostering a Wikipedia-friendly ethos within an organization.

;Length of presentation: 45 minutes

;Special schedule requests: For panelists' schedules, must present on Friday.
;Will you attend WikiConference USA if your submission is not accepted?: Yes
;Abstract:
The Wiki Education Foundation in a San Francisco-based nonprofit that connects higher education resources in the USA and Canada to the publishing power of Wikipedia.

Collectively, we've helped more than 14,000 students in 729 courses contribute more than 33,000 articles to Wikipedia. In this presentation, we'll share learnings from that experience. We'll tailor our presentation chiefly to Wikipedia editors, educators, librarians, museum staff and academics.

Since our presentation to WikiConference USA 2014 in New York City, we've grown from a staff of three to a staff of 14. In that year, we've also expanded our flagship Classroom Program, taken on administration of the Wikipedia Visiting Scholars program in the USA and Canada, and developed independent tools and materials to support our program participants as they improve Wikipedia.

In a series of lightning talks, our staff will offer quick (and energetic!) presentations about their work. Each speaker will share 10 slides in 20 seconds each. In those slides, we will explore:

* Engagement with university instructors, including support tools, outreach, and the refinement of our resources through experience and feedback.
* The life cycle of a student article, from concept planning to library research and their final contributions, including examples of student work.
* Our targeted outreach efforts with like-minded organizations.
* Our engagement with student editors through club activities and field trips.
* New pilots and programs, such as partnerships, Wikipedia Visiting Scholars.
* Our campaigns, such as our gender gap work and the 2016 Year of Science.
* Our outreach work, from community engagement to fundraising efforts.

Each talk will be delivered in a flash format emphasizing a quick, visually-focused presentation to provide a fast, lively but thoughtful overview of learnings, achievements and challenges from our past experiences.

Likewise, we will apply a 20-second flash Q&A round at the end of the talk, to encourage participation and focused questions (and answers).

;Length of presentation: 30 minutes

;Special schedule requests: Though we are available to present any day, it might be useful to present on Friday in case attendees have questions about our work throughout the weekend.

;Will you attend WikiConference USA if your submission is not accepted?: Yes
*Come learn how to use WorldCat.org to discover online copies of pre-1923 books on the Internet Archive, HathiTrust, Google Books, and other archival sources. Worldcat is also a valuable tool for obtaining bibliographic information for essential to creating citations for books, journal articles, DVDs, and other media.

*The Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) was founded in 1967 as "a nonprofit, membership, computer library service and research organization dedicated to the public purposes of furthering access to the world's information” and provides the WorldCat database. The OCLC number identifies a WorldCat record and can be used as a citation template parameter to connect users with libraries holding print editions of a work as well as other physical and electronic media. This is particularly useful for books published before the introduction of the ISBN in 1970.

*Although the OCLC number has great use, it does have drawbacks. There are often multiple records for the same edition of a publication. Fortunately, WorldCat allows the user to “view all editions and formats”, although this is not a guarantee that all editions and formats will be listed. I will discuss strategies for choosing the best record, and what to do when it is appropriate to list up to three records from WorldCat.

*For post-1923 books and some journal articles, WorldCat sometimes lists online editions that are behind paywalls or have relevant snippets available from Google Books. I will also discuss how to include these in citations and how to identify the former as subscription.
Many instructors in academia approach using Wikipedia in the classroom with apprehension or completely ban its use due to the fact that "anyone can edit Wikipedia". However, students as well as faculty often find themselves using Wikipedia to do basic research and learn more about a given topic. Instead of discouraging students from using Wikipedia, it is important to teach students how to best incorporate Wikipedia into their research. Learning how Wikipedia works and how to effectively use Wikipedia is a skill that students will be able to use outside of the classroom and take into the workplace.
This session will discuss how Wikipedia can be used to teach research and critical thinking skills by providing students will the tools necessary to evaluate Wikipedia articles. There are a variety of assignments, some of which only require part of a class session that can be used to teach students about Wikipedia. This includes designing assignments to assist students in understanding what makes a "good" Wikipedia article by having students review references listed and asking them to determine the creditability of sources used. It can also include asking students to review an article and discuss how well the topic is covered and if there are gaps, asking students to edit the article and thereby improve the quality of Wikipedia. Assignments can also take the form of looking at how information is presented in an online community driven website. Students can be tasked with reviewing the talk page and the history of the article to determine how the article was developed over time. By discussing what information was included in the first iteration of the article, students are able to see how an article can improve over time and see how edits from an active online community can result in a robust article on a given subject.
Wikipedia events like Wikimania, the MediaWiki Hackathon and WikiConference USA bring together Wikimedia users at every level of experience, from long-established community leaders to completely new editors, to build new collaborations and work together on projects. Conference scholarship programs and Wikimedia Participation Grants ensure that such opportunities are not available only to those who use Wikipedia as part of their day job, or to those well-off enough to be able to afford the travel and a place to stay by themselves. In this informal meeting, attendees will talk about:
* their experiences with applying for grants from the Wikimedia Foundation and scholarships for Wikimedia project events,
* information on other sources that may fund Wikipedia-related activities,
* the criteria usually used to evaluate scholarship applications,
* what conference organisers expect from funded attendees, and
* what funded attendees can do to make the most of their opportunity.

We will also talk more broadly about the current status of funding opportunities for Wikipedians, from the Wikimedia Foundation and other sources, hopefully by encouraging someone from the Wikimedia Foundation Community Resources team or the WikiConference USA scholarship committee -- we'll ask them if this proposal is accepted!

More broadly, this is an opportunity to discuss or promote particular funding sources that other Wikipedians might not have heard about, with a particular focus on sources that can fund travel to the global meetings coming up in 2016: Wikimania 2016 in Esino Lario, Italy; the MediaWiki Developer Summit 2016 in San Francisco CA, and the MediaWiki Hackathon.
;Abstract:

How consistent or varied are paid editing policies across Wikipedia's different languages? This presentation describes what we found when we looked at the top 30 language editions in Wikipedia and how this might help communities chart a future path for their paid editing policies.

The English Wikipedia's "Conflict of interest" (COI) rules are arguably one of the community's most scrutinized behavioral guidelines. In recent years, it has been augmented with corollary advice pages, impacted by WMF's Terms of Use changes, and even rewritten to a significant degree. It is also unusual as the only issue for which Jimmy Wales has offered a more stringent set of standards than the official guideline. Considering the repeated controversies over "paid advocacy" editing, and keen interest from PR and marketing professionals, we can expect it to be the subject of debate for the foreseeable future.

However, considerably less attention has focused on how non-English language editions handle the same set of circumstances. Community members who contribute only in English may be wholly unaware of how some European language editions, particularly German and Italian, have taken a different path. And many typical English Wikipedia editors may be astonished to learn that, in some cases, shared accounts named for a company are not only permitted to directly edit articles, they are actually encouraged to do so.

Until now, a complete global view of Wikipedia's COI rules has been spotty and anecdotal. This presentation summarizes a research project inspired by a discussion session at Wikimania 2015 and conducted by the authors in August/September 2015 to survey the COI rules in the top 30 language editions.
;Abstract:
Over the past four years I have taught three semesters of a Junior Year Writing course that requires students to write extensive articles on Wikipedia in lieu of traditional papers (as well as assisting in implementing Wikipedia-based assignments in three other courses). I have received outstandingly positive feedback for these classes, resulting in multiple teaching awards for a required class that, taught traditionally, most students find “boring.”

Integrating Wikipedia-based assignments in lieu of traditional papers does a few things at once: 1) it creates new ways for the students to understand ideas about the creation of knowledge and of collective intelligence, 2) it creates a space where students begin to question the validity and verifiability of information, and 3) students are invested in, excited about, and care about the quality of a public project, ensuring their critical engagement with not only the subject matter but their daily lives.

Most of challenges to Writing with Wikipedia are technical, and many of them can be managed with proper support. For the most part students tend to pick up the technical side of Wikipedia editing quickly, but take longer to understand the community behind Wikipedia, as well as fully understanding how to write neutrally. This is true also of faculty members as well, but in the opposite – they often “understand” the community and neutral writing, but have issues with the technical side of Wikipedia, and need more robust training.

Teaching Writing with Wikipedia is a strong pedagogical tool, as it forces students to cite properly, practice peer review, participate in “public” writing, and learn proper formatting of a literature review. As Wikipedia articles evolve over time, students continuously return to their articles, learning proper editing skills and understanding better the writing process. The quality of the work at the end of these classes has been, in my experience, outstanding.

This presentation will overview the benefits of teaching with Wikipedia, particularly in regards to college-level writing, discuss some potential challenges to teaching with Wikipedia, and discuss how to get started implementing Wikipedia in classrooms both personally as well as how to encourage faculty to implement Wikipedia-based assignments. The intent of this presentation is to illustrate some of the successes and challenges that I have had at the University of Massachusetts, as well as encourage more integration of Wikipedia assignments, particularly with the assistance of the Wikipedia Education foundation.
;Abstract: While it is clear that Wikipedia wishes to attract academics and experts in addition to general editors, there are a variety of obstacles for mainstream scholars when they consider engaging in the project, publicly. Mentoring a class in WP editing can be frowned upon, and may be daunting for faculty with limited experience and time. Even for motivated faculty editors with substantial publishing experience, it is difficult to navigate unfamiliar waters of WP where authority does not rest with the individual, reliability is based on unfamiliar rules, content ownership is anathema, and personal reputation can be threatened. To help academic editors realize the intellectual and personal rewards of editing WP, a place for them to get started would help. Some of the conditions of such an environment will be suggested.
;Abstract (at least 300 words to describe your proposal): In June 2011 Sarah Palin misspoke about Paul Revere’s famous midnight ride through Boston. While the correctness of her comments was discussed in the media, editors on Wikipedia’s Paul Revere entry engaged in a discussion over how the entry should address her comments. What made this situation different from other debates on Wikipedia was the attention it got from the press and the increased attention from around the world. How Wikipedia Editors make decisions about entry content is just as important as the content being added. Even Wikipedia’s creators and administrators understand this. They have created core policies to assist editors in making decisions. Of the core policies, three stand out to provide direction when problems occur. First, all entries must maintain a neutral point of view. This impacts the language used in the entry. Second, all sources must be verifiable. This impacts the type of source editors are expected to use to verify information in entries. Third, no original research ensures that information will appear in some form of publication. This presentation will focus on a case study of what process went into editing the Paul Revere entry after Palin's comments hit the media. Exploring the three core policies and the role they played in this process uncovered a Social Drama. By reviewing the discussion archive of the Paul Revere entry and interviewing participants the research was able to understand how social dramas could translate to a virtual community.
