;Abstract:

Anyone may join for a beginner's introduction to the infrastructure of civility in Wikimedia projects. The focus will be on the workflow of keeping safe spaces in Wikimedia's online and in-person spaces. While individuals personally handle some tasks, many aspects of Wikimedia friendly space are a result of infrastructure built into the design of the Wikimedia user experience.

Presenter Megan Wacha will share Wikimedia NYC's new initiative to establish a model for reporting, identifying, documenting, and addressing harassment issues in the Wikimedia community that does not happen on a Wikimedia project. Wikimedia NYC programming includes edit-a-thons, lectures, course workshops, and a monthly salon and skill-share, and while most of these events provide a fun and welcoming environment, there are inevitably moments of discord. Sometimes these are minor disagreements that can be adequately handled by chapter leadership. At other times, members are subject to harassment and abuse. Wacha will provide a brief history of harassment in Wikimedia NYC, and then detail its work with an external consultant to address them, including a newly revised Code of Conduct and training for board leadership.

Presenter Lane Rasberry briefly describes some past research in Wikimedia civility. Following this, he presents "Machine learning to predict Wikimedia user blocks" an ongoing research project by graduate student researchers from the Data Science Institute at the University of Virginia. In this project students seek to use machine learning to automate the detection of civility problems to flag for further human review.
;Abstract: Wikimedia New York City, the first chapter in the United States, started with a picnic in August 2007, the "picnic anyone can edit". We helped develop several types of multi-site events such as the Great American Wiknic and the early Wiki Loves photography and GLAM events, as well as countering systemic bias activities, while working with the Wikimedia DC chapter, and spreading nationally through the Wikimedians Active in Local Regions of the United States (W.A.L.R.U.S.) and sharing and learning from ideas globally. We will look at provincialism and globalism, volunteers and partners, as well as strategy and serendipity. This talk will explore the model and evolution of community organizing locally and multi-locally from my personal perspective, and also transition and the balance of formal and informal organizing structures.
;Abstract: Analyzing and reporting event attendance and editor retention is crucial for both WMF-grantee reporting and guiding organizations in evolving their events, but also notoriously difficult to achieve. Wikimedia NYC has prototyped a method for reporting attendances across multiple events based on Dashboard data. Key features include separate reports for total attendances as well as unique editors, identification of editors recruited in the context of events, identification of returning editors, analysis of coattendances, i.e., events with an overlap in attendees as compared to a given event, and tracking editors (both established and newly recruited) across events.
Workshop only: While this has been useful for the chapter both internally and with reporting to WMF, there seems to be no agreed-upon standard definition of what constitutes ‘retention‘ of an editor. As a consequence, for such analysis and reporting methods to be of comparative value across organizations, some discussion and standardization would be required, which a workshop might serve to get started with. Furthermore, in a workshop setting, attendees from other organizations managing their events and attendee records in Dashboard would be able to experiment with applying the Wikimedia NYC methods to their own context.
See #Appendix some examples of Wikimedia NYC metric reports generated using the proposed method.

Following this, a researcher from the University of Virginia presents "Machine learning to predict Wikimedia user blocks" an ongoing research project by graduate student researchers from the Data Science Institute at the University of Virginia. In this project students seek to use machine learning to automate the detection of civility problems to flag for further human review.
;Abstract: The genealogical and local history community is a large, active, computer literate group participating in a number of collaborative projects. Based on surveys and the academic literature (e.g. Duff and Johnson, Fulton, Yakel), this presentation will discuss patterns of information seeking and dissemination in this group and how they compare to those of Wikimedians. It will survey existing genealogical and local history projects that are wholly or partially collaborative, including Ancestry.com, Geni.com, Find a Grave, and USGenWeb and how those projects enable or inhibit collaborative information gathering and dissemination based on Wikimedia standards, with reference to research on how Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects have been successful while other similar projects have failed (esp. Hill). It will present a potential WMF genealogical and local history designed to encourage collaborative, open access information gathering and dissemination that is specialized for the needs of these groups and designed to effectively interact with other WMF projects, especially Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons and make the case that such a project will draw the genealogical and local history community into the Wikimedia community to the benefit of both.
;Abstract:
This presentation will serve as an introspective look into my first year as the Wikipedian in Residence for Gender Equity at West Virginia University Libraries. I want to impart upon the audience my experiences in this position, what has been successful, lessons learned, and my vision as I begin my second year in this role. I believe that positions such as this can be replicated successfully to focus on the difficult conversations regarding gender and other forms of diversity on Wikipedia, and on college campuses as well.

It is also significant to note, that the creation and welcoming of this position signaled an interesting moment in academia in which social justice, and institutional cultural change were marked as important signifiers of potential future growth. I plan to explore the ways in which cultural change of this nature can continue throughout academia and Wikipedia alike, to support diversity and open access issues.

I will also discuss my integration into the culture of Wikipedia as viewed from an outsider with ties to academia. As a Wikipedian in Residence without any prior editing experience before the start of this position, I want to share the perspective I’ve gained during this first year, and elaborate on successful strategies for fostering collaboration with those who are new to Wikipedia. I will emphasize the positives to be gained from incorporating individuals with various backgrounds to learn and collaborate with existing, longstanding Wikipedia community members. I am specifically interested in discussing how community activists and academics alike can use Wikipedia, in concert with longstanding Wikipedia members, to promote global scholarship and share their areas of interest.
;Abstract:
Using Wikipedia in the classroom and archives need not be limited to reporting on existing historical sources, but can enable the kind of guided interdisciplinary archival research and introduction to scholarly practices typically unavailable to inexperienced students. Wikipedia opens the door to expertise to students who learn that they can become online producers of knowledge, not just consumers. A team of faculty, students and Wikipedians who led this La Guardia and Wagner Archives GLAM project - that may be formally developed into a credit-bearing independent study class - will share how this project has developed and suggest ways that Wikipedia might develop in the future to better support new and productive collaborations between academic instructors, historians, archivists and students.

In January 2016, the archivists of the LaGuardia and Wagner Archives at LaGuardia Community College, CUNY joined forces with LaGuardia faculty and local Wikipedians to design a project that would increase online visibility of archival holdings as well as introduce students to the process of archival research and most ambitiously, to involve them in establishing unwritten historical narratives that are crucial towards building a more inclusive public history of activism and our cities. During an early meeting with the team of students - called “Koch Scholars” - a much needed Wikipedia entry was identified that surprisingly did not yet exist. The students collaboratively worked all semester building a localized historical narrative on HIV/AIDS in New York City based upon unique archival sources that included the papers of Mayor Ed Koch and 1980s city government documents.

The gender gap and content gender gap - the dearth of female editors and women-focused content on the English Wikipedia - have been the subjects of much documentation and debate. When addressing these discrepancies, we also need to address representation of transgender women and men, as well as people with non-binary gender identities such as agender, bigender, and genderqueer.

While the "transgender tipping point" has brought more public awareness of transgender people, mainstream narratives are shaped by cisgender (non-transgender) people. Trans and non-binary people can be discouraged from editing on Wikipedia by frequent disruptive editing and vandalism of gender-related pages, as well as unclear policies on deadnaming and correct gendering of trans people in articles. Cisgender voices dominate debates on these issues, with accusations of bias and political correctness. This creates an unwelcoming environment for trans participation.

The prominence of Wikipedia articles in search engine results means that many people learn about transgender issues through Wikipedia, so it is imperative that this information be as accurate and respectful as possible. To address the transgender gap, more understanding of trans and non-binary identities is needed. This presentation will provide a brief overview of these identities, show examples of disruptive editing and debates over trans issues, and suggest options for improving the experience of trans editors and coverage of issues that concern us.
;Abstract:
As more and more user groups, thematic organizations, and chapters pop up in North America, it's more important than ever for groups to collaborate, share learnings, and make sure we're not re-inventing the wheel or making the same mistakes repeatedly. In this presentation, the Wiki Education Foundation’s LiAnna Davis will focus on mistakes she and the rest of the team running the U.S. education program have made when thinking about program impact.

Program impact is an important area for anyone running an outreach program to consider. Measuring your impact is crucial for justifying your funding, ensuring you’re using staff or volunteer time and energy effectively, and creating a sustainable model for your program. While we in the Wikimedia movement talk a lot about impact, we don’t talk a lot about how program leaders should think about impact, and how that can help you make decisions in how to run your outreach programs. We hope to start that conversation in this session.

With six years of experience running a program that’s taught 22,000 students how to edit Wikipedia and has added 25 million words (or more than 44 copies of War and Peace) to articles, we have thought a lot about impact — and we’ve made a lot of mistakes along the way in how we defined impact and our program.

In this session, we'll share the five (and one half!) biggest mistakes we've made — and how we've adapted because of them.

Wikimedia organization leaders and others running programs will hopefully benefit from our stories of what we did that worked, and what we did that didn’t work, when it came to thinking about the impact of our programs. We’ll share what we’ve learned that inspires our funders, ensures our staff or volunteer time is spent wisely, and helps us scale our program quickly.

We hope program leaders will walk away from this session with an understanding of what lessons we learned from our mistakes so they will not make the same ones as they design programs and outreach activities. While the examples will come from the education program, the lessons learned are applicable to any outreach program.
;Abstract: This will be a joint panel discussion containing members of both the Wikimedia Foundation's legal team and Wikimedia District of Columbia's Public Policy Committee.

:We will discuss how each organization approaches public policy, and how we participate in policy conversations. We will discuss the limits on lobbying that we face as nonprofits, the meetings and discussions we have had with government officials (including congressional staff and a member of the European parliament), and the process of submitting written statements to government bodies.

:We will recount our recent and ongoing advocacy efforts, on topics such as:
:*Orphan works reform. Orphan works are works whose authors are unknown or uncontactable, and thus cannot be reused while they are under copyright. Many countries have provisions allowing the reuse of orphan works under certain circumstances, but the United States as of yet does not. The Copyright Office has been undertaking a study to develop recommendations to Congress on allowing the reuse of orphan works, to which WMF and WMDC have submitted written statements (WMDC, WMF).
:*Public domain status of California state government works. California is one of the few U.S. states whose works are considered to be in the public domain. Earlier this year, the California Legislature considered a bill which would have placed some or all of its state works under copyright. Both WMF and WMDC submitted letters to the California Senate Judiciary Committee (WMF, WMDC) opposing this change, as Wikimedia projects currently host over 1100 public domain images from the California government.

:Other topics will include the U.S. copyright notice-and-takedown system, and a content removal in Canada. We will also describe some recent court decisions, as well as the U.S. federal government efforts toward open data and open source policy, which are likely to make it easier for government staff to work cooperatively on Wikimedia software and data, and for Wikimedians to make use of what the government can offer.
;Abstract: In the last few years there has been an explosion of initiatives to connect libraries and librarians with the Wikimedia projects. Many librarians have run outreach efforts at their institutions, from staff trainings to public edit-a-thons, and institutions ranging from ARL libraries to library consortiums are hosting Wikipedians-in-residence. The Wikimedia Foundation is supporting the Wikipedia library project. Libraries and library organizations around the world are interested in collaborations, ranging from outreach and education to technical initiatives to improve citations and linked open data. But while momentum is growing and libraries represent natural partners for the Wikimedia projects, community outreach efforts to date have not often focused on the unique challenges and opportunities that Wikipedia-library partnerships represent.

:As information professionals grapple with working with the world's largest reference source, what kinds of projects work and which don't? What are some ideas on the horizon, and what are some ways we can work together as a profession to do large-scale initiatives? This session will feature short presentations of model projects from a number of librarian-Wikipedians (TBC) who have done Wikipedia projects in libraries, with an extensive moderated audience discussion following. Participants will leave inspired with ideas to bring back to their institutions and knowledge of resources and other people doing similar work. (Followup discussion can be held as part of the unconference meetup).
;Abstract:
An underdeveloped area of coverage within Wikipedia is the cultures and histories of the world's many thousand Indigenous peoples. This presentation presents and analyzes the challenge of achieving a better representation of Indigenous peoples on Wikipedia - both in terms of editor diversity and in terms of quality of coverage. The presentation is based on the research that resulted in the article 2016 in American Anthropologist “Writing Irataba: On Representing Native Americans on Wikipedia”, but is presented with a focus on the types of solutions that can be developed to counteract the problems that hinder Wikipedia from being able to produce adequate coverage of Native Americans and other indigenous peoples.
The presentation notes a series of concerns about the coverage and representation of Native Americans on the English Wikipedia including: lack of coverage, biased coverage, poorly sourced coverage. Illustrative examples are drawn from Wikipedia content.
It traces these problems to a number of underlying factors: lack of access to high quality sources, lack of ability to identify and interpret high quality sources, difficulties reconciling Wikipedia’s sourcing requirements for oral and traditional knowledge, and finally, but significantly, a relative lack of contributors from indigenous communities. The lack of participation from native communities may be considered a result of the systemic bias affecting many marginalized communities in the world, and growing participation of minority contributors is the main potential solution for this issue.
The presentation proposes a number of solution strategies: Outreach to indigenous communities through tribal libraries, colleges and museums. Outreach to academics specializing in representing knowledge of indigenous communities. Partnership between tribal institutions and academics in developing coverage of specific topics.
Finally, the presentation points out the potential of Wikipedias in indigenous languages as ways for indigenous communities to seize control of their own cultural and linguistic heritage, and as a potential tool for revitalization of endangered indigenous languages and knowledges. It is suggested that this potential if fully encouraged and explored may become the main motivation for indigenous communities and tribes to engage with the Wikimedia movement.
;Abstract: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Training_modules
This workshop will provide participants a chance to take part in shaping the content and format of SuSa’s training materials. We will be asking you to share your experiences and challenges in running edit-a-thons, moderating online disputes, and reducing harassment on the Wikimedia projects. We will lead breakout sessions and knowledge sharing exercises to explore what volunteer training should include, and how it could be implemented in our communities. Topics will include de-escalation techniques, relevant policies, dispute resolution, and more.

-------

The Wikimedia Foundation is dedicated to creating safe spaces for users – regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, sex, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, race, ethnicity, national origin, age, political affiliation, religion or community status – to meet, interact, learn and collaborate. This goal applies both online, on Wikimedia projects, and offline, during real-life editing events and meetups run by or sponsored by the Wikimedia Foundation.

Functionary and community governance groups – including stewards, admins, global admins, and Arbitration Committees – play a crucial administrative and editorial role on all our sites, especially in curtailing harassment of volunteers and arbitrating and resolving disputes. Similarly, event organizers and on-site volunteers play a key role in preventing and addressing harassment and friendly-space-policy violations at events.

To help these key user groups better coordinate their work to promote safe environments for community members, we are facilitating, during the 2016-17 year, the development and deployment of two modules based around the critical areas of addressing harassment online and at events. This session will help Wikimedia communities get involved in the crafting and decision-making around these modules.
;Abstract: Wikimedia Commons is the media repository which serves images, videos, and other media to Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. Since its establishment, the primary check for suitability for content to be shared on Wikimedia Commons has been copyright compatibility. Commons accepts content which has a free copyright license and rejects content which does not have one. But what other media rights exists? Should copyright be the only right that is considered in a Wikimedia Commons upload?

:This presentation will consider other theories of media ownership, including ownership of non-digital original artwork, patent ownership, trademark rights, and personality rights including the model release. I am not a lawyer, so this presentation will be a review of the major community stories which have developed over the past few years rather than any legal analysis of what is best to do. I will give special attention to "model releases", because I edit medical content and the reuse of pictures of medical conditions which show an identifiable person is something that affects parts of Wikipedia where I edit.
;Abstract:

SUMMARY - How can we engage academics and other knowledge professionals in alternative ways to contribute expertise without requiring them to edit Wikipedia directly?

BACKGROUND - Wikipedia has a complicated relationship with subject-matter experts. As "the encyclopedia that anyone can edit", and one which operates by policies of "verifiability" and "no original research", its model precludes appeals to editors' personal epistemic authority. When people who have dedicated significant parts of their lives to the study of a particular topic try to contribute what they know to a Wikipedia article, it's easy to understand their confusion and/or frustration when their work is undone or criticized by pseudonymous or anonymous others -- editors who, we may assume, are not likely to have the same level of experience or credentials. It's a phenomenon that happens on a daily basis on Wikipedia and which aggrieved parties have even written about several times in popular publications.

Many academics, journalists, historians, GLAM professionals, and other subject-matter experts do contribute productively to Wikipedia, of course, but it requires a particular kind of patience beyond that demanded of most other editors simply because the social and professional structures they're socialized in weigh thoughts and opinions according to expertise and specialization. Furthermore, since many experts are unprepared for the kinds of challenges and interactions Wikipedia has in store for them, they may use their real name and worry that reverts and disagreements could have a negative impact on their professional reputation. Still, many Wikipedians and groups within the community routinely express that they wish more experts would contribute. Most would agree that expertise does have value on Wikipedia -- just not in some of the most obvious ways.

Since the beginning of the project, the way we have tried to engage new Wikipedians has been to encourage them to edit articles directly. The question we seek to address in this workshop is: How can we engage academics and other knowledge professionals in ways that allow them to contribute expertise without requiring them to edit articles directly?

FORMAT - The workshop will begin with short presentations which cover:
*an overview of the challenge
*past failures
*potential strategies (ways of selling the idea of contributing to Wikipedia, addressing concerns about "credit", lessening the time needed to get over the learning curve)
*alternative forms of contribution (article reviews, content gap analyses, expert consultant for a particular WikiProject)
*possibilities for mediated engagement (talk pages, templates, bots, off-wiki tools, audio or video commentary)

Most of the requested time, however, is for discussion. We would like to learn from and collaborate with the Wikipedians, Wikimedians, librarians, academics, teachers, journalists, curators, and others in attendance in the hope that we can cultivate ideas, develop strategies, and formulate some practicable ways forward.
;Abstract:
The Wiki Education Foundation in a San Francisco-based nonprofit that connects higher education resources in the USA and Canada to the publishing power of Wikipedia.

Collectively, we've helped more than 14,000 students in 729 courses contribute more than 33,000 articles to Wikipedia. In this presentation, we'll share learnings from that experience. We'll tailor our presentation chiefly to Wikipedia editors, educators, librarians, museum staff and academics.

Since our presentation to WikiConference USA 2014 in New York City, we've grown from a staff of three to a staff of 14. In that year, we've also expanded our flagship Classroom Program, taken on administration of the Wikipedia Visiting Scholars program in the USA and Canada, and developed independent tools and materials to support our program participants as they improve Wikipedia.

In a series of lightning talks, our staff will offer quick (and energetic!) presentations about their work. Each speaker will share 10 slides in 20 seconds each. In those slides, we will explore:

* Engagement with university instructors, including support tools, outreach, and the refinement of our resources through experience and feedback.
* The life cycle of a student article, from concept planning to library research and their final contributions, including examples of student work.
* Our targeted outreach efforts with like-minded organizations.
* Our engagement with student editors through club activities and field trips.
* New pilots and programs, such as partnerships, Wikipedia Visiting Scholars.
* Our campaigns, such as our gender gap work and the 2016 Year of Science.
* Our outreach work, from community engagement to fundraising efforts.

Each talk will be delivered in a flash format emphasizing a quick, visually-focused presentation to provide a fast, lively but thoughtful overview of learnings, achievements and challenges from our past experiences.

Likewise, we will apply a 20-second flash Q&A round at the end of the talk, to encourage participation and focused questions (and answers).

;Length of presentation: 30 minutes

;Special schedule requests: Though we are available to present any day, it might be useful to present on Friday in case attendees have questions about our work throughout the weekend.
Many instructors in academia approach using Wikipedia in the classroom with apprehension or completely ban its use due to the fact that "anyone can edit Wikipedia". However, students as well as faculty often find themselves using Wikipedia to do basic research and learn more about a given topic. Instead of discouraging students from using Wikipedia, it is important to teach students how to best incorporate Wikipedia into their research. Learning how Wikipedia works and how to effectively use Wikipedia is a skill that students will be able to use outside of the classroom and take into the workplace.
This session will discuss how Wikipedia can be used to teach research and critical thinking skills by providing students will the tools necessary to evaluate Wikipedia articles. There are a variety of assignments, some of which only require part of a class session that can be used to teach students about Wikipedia. This includes designing assignments to assist students in understanding what makes a "good" Wikipedia article by having students review references listed and asking them to determine the creditability of sources used. It can also include asking students to review an article and discuss how well the topic is covered and if there are gaps, asking students to edit the article and thereby improve the quality of Wikipedia. Assignments can also take the form of looking at how information is presented in an online community driven website. Students can be tasked with reviewing the talk page and the history of the article to determine how the article was developed over time. By discussing what information was included in the first iteration of the article, students are able to see how an article can improve over time and see how edits from an active online community can result in a robust article on a given subject.
;Abstract: Notability, what does it mean within Wikipedia? This is a subject that many of us have wrestled with far too often, yet we are left to our personal threshold for what we establish to be notable.

In our presentation, we will show you just how arbitrary this could be, by presenting a selection of Wikipedia articles, some have been accepted and some have been rejected for lacking notability. Decide for yourself if an article should be accepted or rejected, and then learn the fate of the article and what the community said about it. Together, let’s have a frank discussion whether or not notability standards are being applied fairly, or if we should take a real look into establishing some concrete notability guidelines.

Participants should come away with a keen understanding of this dilemma, how notability is currently defined, and some solutions to improve the standard.:
;Abstract:
This presentation will facilitate a discussion about an intensive, multi-semester project focused on using Wikipedia to better provide open access scholarly information on the work of Octavia E. Butler and her work. This project has served as a means for allowing students to engage with existing scholarship on Butler as well as gain relevant practice in writing collaboratively, both with each other in small groups and with the larger online communities of Wikipedia editors and science fiction fandom. The presentation will also review the impact that working on distinct types of research writing (collaborative, online encyclopedic entries versus individual thesis-based research papers) had on students’ understanding of Butler’s life and works as well as their engagement with the course material. At 2014’s WikiConference in NYC, we invited students from the early part of the project to present on their Wikipedia participation and one of their comments was: “‘This was the best experience of my life.” We will invite students to join us for this presentation as well.

Our methodology will be illustrated with examples from two English research paper classes which formed part of the Wikipedia Education program during the Spring 2014 and 2015 semesters alongside classes conducted at the CUNY Graduate Center, Barnard College, Harvard, Georgetown University, and NYU. Working in teams with Wikipedia editors, our students redrafted the Wikipedia article on Butler’s bestselling novels Fledgling and Kindred as well as the information on Octavia Butler’s biography.

Our presentation will not be solely limited to details of this project, and will touch upon issues of interest to educators interested in developing strategies to improve faculty outreach: how to conduct collaborative workshops and editathons with other departments and programs, and how to integrate librarians involved in information/digital literacy in the instructional process.
;Abstract:
The Wikipedia community cites sources that are described as reliable and authoritative in order to uphold one of its primary pillars - to write from a neutral point of view. And from scholarly articles and monographs to, when framed appropriately, newspapers and magazines, the range of what counts as a reliable source seems diverse. However, at a moment when the gender gap and representation of other marginalized groups dominate conversations about Wikipedia’s content and its community of editors, it becomes necessary to question these notions of authority. How does a community that’s been historically marginalized by scholarship mark itself as notable? How does a community of dance write itself into the encyclopedia that anyone can edit?

This presentation will examine the challenges to representing one community of practice, that of twentieth century American concert dance. It will discuss concepts of authority, sourcing, and intellectual property within its community and the barriers these issues pose to its representation on Wikipedia. While it will offer some possible actions that operate within Wikipedia’s existing guidelines and culture, the primary purpose of this presentation is to foster conversation about the implications of concepts of reliability on other Wikiprojects and issues of importance to the Wikipedia community.
