;Abstract:
A recent research article (summarized here) noted that many images are only used on only one language version of Wikipedia. This shows that sharing images between language projects could be an easy way to improve other-language Wikipedias. I've successfully shared images from my library's special collections with Japanese Wikipedia. I added several images of Japanese war banners to their Japanese counterparts, where many were retained and received more image views.

GLAM employees often upload images to Wikimedia Commons. After making sure the metadata and categories are accurate, sometimes it's not clear what the next step is. Tools that track image views can help uploaders understand which images are the most popular. I'll walk through how to use tools like GLAMorgan and GLAMorous to track views of categories of images hosted on Commons. I'll show how to use the tools to see how and where images are used, and where it might be productive to share images with other-language Wikipedia pages.

;Abstract:
Building upon previous linked data pilot efforts, in late 2017, OCLC partnered with three institutions to demonstrate the value of linked data for streamlining library workflows. Participants from the partner institutions shared use cases for reconciling, creating, editing, and relating entities. OCLC staff surveyed existing technologies to meet the needs described by these use cases.

An out-of-the-box Wikibase instance was chosen as the prototype to offer our partners feature-rich tools without a great deal of time and effort developing those tools. The following advantages were key to the selection of Wikibase for the prototype: its open source, all-purpose data model is collaborative and has a diversity of knowledge and sources, multilingual usage, user-defined properties and version history. These built-in features allowed partner institutions to 1) reconcile strings representing people, organizations, concepts, places, and events against an index based on entities; and 2) create, edit, and share entity descriptions, while also allowing for the contribution of additional contextual relationships between entities within a short time, dependent only on spinning up a Wikibase instance and populating that instance with high-quality, vetted data.

Initial feedback on this effort was extremely positive and the project quickly expanded to 16 institutions of varying sizes and use cases. The creation of library-driven metadata in a Wikibase instance has resulted in collaborative discussions of best practices for describing library resources such as translations of creative works and cultural objects. Reconciling, creating, editing, and sharing entities in Wikibase has resulted in participants commenting on the paradigm shift this work represents for the way the library community thinks about description. As we consider what is important to capture in our pilot effort, the relationships between things come to the forefront of resource description. Also, as the project users became well-versed in SPARQL queries to mine data and experimented with additional searching tools, project discussions revolved around how library patrons would expect to search for items. While putting library users at the center of resource description isn’t a novel idea, the prototype shows that library patrons will be able to navigate metadata in a way that had not been possible prior to linked data.

With Wikibase, we are offering a revolutionary step for describing information. Describing metadata in a linked environment ensures resource discovery. Additionally, the toolset available through the Wiki platform demonstrates that participation in the metadata creation process can be more inclusive. With an editor such as Wikibase, users can create linked data without knowing triples, RDF, or URIs. Metadata specialists no longer have to know specific schemas to participate in the description of resources. As such, the Wikibase prototype demonstrates the value of linked data for improving resource-description workflows in libraries.

Representatives from partner institutions will give an update on project progress, demonstrate the interfaces and underlying data, and cover technical challenges and achievements. We’ll focus especially on the collaborative nature of the project and the gains achieved using a Wikibase platform. More details about the linked data prototype effort can be found on OCLC’s website.
See Offline Internet Resources for Latin America for the on-wiki project page.

Over the past three years I've been overseeing research at Columbia related to using offline Wikipedia for education in Latin America. My graduate students at Columbia's School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) have benefited from Wikimedia Foundation travel grants to conduct research in Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, and the Quechua region of Peru.

The first year, Cuba, found that offline digital media could play an important part in education in Latin American regions that lack connectivity, or where data plans are too expensive for many inhabitants. We learned that there was considerable acceptance of Wikipedia as a tool for learning among the educational community there.

I presented our findings at Wikimania in San Diego, and met Adam Holt from Internet-in-a-Box, who connected me to Dr. James Heilman from Wiki Project Med, the Wikipedia medical program. I reached out to colleagues at Mount Sinai Global Health in NYC and the Wikipedia Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

Together, we designed a program to research feasibility in rural medical clinics on the Haitian border in the Dominican Republic. We conducted it in the spring of 2017.

The project is described in the video Offline Innovation - Bridging the Digital Divide in Latin America.

There was a follow-up summer research project, also conducted in partnership with a Mount Sinai physician, in clinics in the DR and indigenous areas in Guatemala and Peru.

This resulted in an invitation from the Peruvian Ministry of Education to conduct research seeing whether Internet-in-a-Box and Wikipedia content could support their initiatives in rural areas, particularly among the Quechua areas surrounding Cusco. I oversaw another team of graduate field research in the spring of 2018. It found keen interest among Quechua school administrators.

It resulted in a summer placement of a student to conduct a pilot with five devices in five Quechua schools. The teachers and administrators have been particularly interested in Wikipedia's Quechua articles, and Spanish articles relating to vocational education, including agriculture and construction work.

The student, Harold Cardenas Lema, h will return to write up his findings next week. I have advised him to apply for funding to come present them in Columbus. (He is a Cuban university professor who used Wikipedia in his classes in Cuba. As a result of our contact, he became the first non-exile Cuban student to enroll at SIPA since the Revolution. He is interested in supporting Wikipedia work in Cuba after he completes his degree.)

Columbia is in the process of documenting the Peru research as an online Case Study, which will be available later this year.

The medical side of the project is continuing under the direction of former Mount Sinai physician Sam Zidovetski. He has been working closely with James Heilman to improve and add open source professional content.

SNAC (Social Networks and Archival Context) is a tool developed to address the phenomena archival diaspora by allowing archivists, librarians, and scholars to jointly maintain information about the people documented in archival collections. SNAC demonstrates the feasibility of separating the description of persons, families, and organizations—including their socio-historical contexts—from the description of the historical resources that are the primary evidence of their lives and work. A key objective is to provide researchers with convenient, integrated access to historical collections held by multiple private and public archives and libraries around the world while also setting the stage for a cooperative program for maintaining information about the people documented in the collections. SNAC also has the power to link “creators to creators” in context provided by librarians and archivists.
By the time you finish reading this, your mind will wonder to a new topic. In the age of information overload, text is simply not enough to keep one's focus, and to fully get the message across. An image on the other hand will grab more attention, will convey the point to a greater extent, and may actually convince and educate the reader. ;Abstract: Wikitongues is a nonprofit volunteer organization focused on sustaining cultural diversity by safeguarding every language in the world. Through a network of hundreds of volunteers around the world, we collect video recordings of languages and publish them under creative commons licensing to facilitate free educational use. We also compile word lists, phrasebooks, and dictionaries, including open-source technology to make it easy for language students, educators, and activists to produce their own linguistic documentation for the benefit of their communities. This lightning talk will serve as an introduction to our growing relationship with the Wikimedia movement — as a newly formed user group, we're contributing multilingual content to the Commons and promoting the better integration of oral knowledge into the Wikimedia framework.
The WMF Community Tech team is working on a tool to help event organizers create, run and generate reports about editathons and similar events. In this session, I’ll discuss the research we’ve completed and the initial plans we will have produced for such a tool by the time of the conference. The sessions goal: to bring event organizers together for a discussion about their needs, to gather feedback on plans for the first version of the Event Tool (working title), and to generate ideas for future iterations.
;Abstract: In this talk, I discuss the use of Wikidata in a graduate seminar at Vanderbilt University. During the spring semester of 2018, a colleague and I taught a course titled The Digital Flânuer: Mapping Twentieth-Century Berlin. The seminar combined discussion about the history, literature, and subcultures of Berlin with instruction in fundamental techniques of the digital humanities, including geospatial data analysis, querying Wikidata, text mining, 3D modeling, and network analysis. Out of this digital whirlwhind, Wikidata emerged as a favorite among students, several of whom drew on Wikidata for their final projects. In this presentation, I explore practical means for incorporating Wikidata into the humanities classroom, indicate areas of difficulty for students (e.g., incomplete or misclassified data, misleading SPARQL queries, and challenges with transforming the data into other formats), and propose possible improvements to the Wikidata query interface to improve its utility in the college and university classroom.
;Abstract: Academic libraries often have databases of information. It is possible to automatically match a database to corresponding Wikidata items with the Mix'n'Match tool. I'll walk through the process of how to import a database into Mix'n'Match from start to finish. I'll start with evaluating a database to see if it should have its own property, and how to propose a new property on Wikidata. I'll explain how the Mix'n'Match upload tools work, and when it is better to try to manually upload your database. I'll show how to approve automatic matches, and recommend it as an introductory editing task for librarians. For unmatched entries, I'll briefly go over Wikidata's notability criteria and when to make a new Wikidata item for an unmatched item. If there's time, I'll demonstrate a few SPARQL queries surrounding a Mix'n'Match database. For this instruction, I'll draw on my own experience manually uploading one database and getting a property approved for another.

If this proposal is accepted, I'll ask Magnus more about exactly how items are matched and how the scraping import tool works and incorporate the information into my presentation.
;Abstract: Open-source tools for collaborative online transcription remain limited a decade after the ProofreadPage extension became one of the features of working in Wikisource. But how many lessons have been learned from implementations of ProofreadPage outside of Wikimedia, and what can be learned and integrated from the user experience and interface of closed source crowdsourcing tools like Zooinverse? What technical and local Wikisource community hurdles need to be met in order to build successful online collaboration for a transcription project. This workshop should introduce users to the ProofreadPage interface for the transcription of a book provided in two languages. Commentary will be offered as to how to handle difficulties, along with how these challenges have been recognized and met in other online collaborative transcription environments.
;Abstract: Increasingly, volunteers and affiliates in the Wikimedia movement are approached by external organizations (GLAMs and other knowledge institutions) who want to collaborate in partnerships related to structured data: data donations to Wikidata, or (in the near future) structured data media uploads to Wikimedia Commons. In this session, we look together at a general workflow for such projects - typical steps and phases in their development, and general tips and insights for each step or phase.

Data and media uploads have similar (general) workflows:

*receiving a set of media/data;
*processing this media/data to make it ready for Commons or Wikidata;
*uploading the media/data;
*processing the media/data after upload;
*stimulating enrichment and improvement to the media/data after upload;
*stimulating re-use of the media/data after upload;
*evaluation and reporting after upload.

The Workshop will help participants understand the general approach to this work, and how the upcoming changes via Structured Data on Commons will change our work with uploads to and from Commons.

This sessions is based on sessions given at Wikimedia Conference Learning Days and Wikimania Learning Days by my colleague Sandra Faucounnier.

Wiki editors and other researchers use citations to show where they get the information they publish. Collecting citation information may seem like a humble and bookish wiki pastime. Perhaps instead it is a fundamental change in the human experience, starting with a big change to the wiki experience.

Scholia is a Wikidata viewer which presents academic profiles of researchers, universities, publications, and academic topics. It generates visualizations from WikiCite information, which itself is a project to create Wikidata items for information sources.

Since the founding of Wikipedia the Wiki community has discussed using structured data for the management of citations. What is less discussed are the other ways in which citation information generates useful insights. For example, if Wikidata has citation information for publications, then it can also generate lists of all papers by an author, or show the topics on which a particular university publishes most frequently, or show when and where various topics became popular subjects of publication.

This presentation will demonstrate how to view profiles in Wikidata, why they matter, what this means for the future of Wikimedia projects, and how this open data will elevate Wikimedia projects to change the world in yet another big way.
;Abstract: In the last few years there has been an explosion of initiatives to connect libraries and librarians with the Wikimedia projects. Many librarians have run outreach efforts at their institutions, from staff trainings to public edit-a-thons, and institutions ranging from ARL libraries to library consortiums are hosting Wikipedians-in-residence. The Wikimedia Foundation is supporting the Wikipedia library project. Libraries and library organizations around the world are interested in collaborations, ranging from outreach and education to technical initiatives to improve citations and linked open data. But while momentum is growing and libraries represent natural partners for the Wikimedia projects, community outreach efforts to date have not often focused on the unique challenges and opportunities that Wikipedia-library partnerships represent.

:As information professionals grapple with working with the world's largest reference source, what kinds of projects work and which don't? What are some ideas on the horizon, and what are some ways we can work together as a profession to do large-scale initiatives? This session will feature short presentations of model projects from a number of librarian-Wikipedians who have done Wikipedia projects in libraries, with an extensive moderated audience discussion following. Participants will leave inspired with ideas to bring back to their institutions and knowledge of resources and other people doing similar work. (Followup discussion can be held as part of the unconference meetup).
;Abstract (at least 300 words to describe your proposal):

Over the years, cultural heritage institutions like galleries, libraries, archives, and museums have produced a wealth of data. A significant portion of that data has been devoted to describing the people and organizations responsible for creating information resources. In library parlance, this work is known as "authority control"—essentially the process of establishing and maintaining an official ("authorized") record for an entity in order to uniquely identify it.

The Remixing Archival Metadata Project (RAMP) editor is an open-source tool for generating authority records for the people and organizations associated with archival and special collections. The RAMP editor is built around two metadata formats used primarily by archivists: Encoded Archival Description (EAD) and Encoded Archival Context–Corporate Bodies, Persons, and Families (EAC-CPF). Whereas EAD is used to describe collections themselves, EAC-CPF is used to describe their social context: the people, organizations, and families represented in archival collections. The RAMP editor leverages EAC-CPF as a data exchange format, letting users take existing metadata, enhance it, and then republish it to the English Wikipedia through its API.

This skill-building workshop will empower participants to creatively repurpose metadata drawn from one community of practice (that of libraries and archives) and reformat it for another community of practice (that of Wikipedia). As a global, ubiquitous platform, Wikipedia can serve as a tool for curating public information about the people and organizations represented in archival and special collections—and as a platform for connecting with user communities outside the context of a cultural heritage institution’s own holdings. At the same time, Wikipedia itself stands to benefit from the high-quality data and curatorial attention to detail that librarians, archivists, and others have worked to develop over time.

The workshop will cover:

# Installation of the tool. Participants are encouraged (but not required) to bring a laptop computer if possible.
# Working with EAC-CPF and creating basic EAC-CPF records.
# Creating stub- or start-class Wikipedia pages using metadata from libraries and archives.
# Strategies for translating existing metadata from the world of GLAM to the world of Wikipedia. We will review licensing issues and provide a model for addressing them.
# A model workflow for implementation and further ideas for using EAC-CPF data, such as end-user displays and visualizations.

;Length of presentation/talk (see Presentation Types for lengths of different presentation types): At least 75-90 minutes (additional time would allow for more practice with the tool).
