|abstract=Starting in 2016, the historians in the LaGuardia and Wagner Archives joined forces with LaGuardia faculty and local Wikipedians to design a Wikipedia “GLAM” (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums) project that would increase online visibility of archival holdings, introduce students to the process of archival research, and most ambitiously, to involve them in establishing unwritten historical narratives that are crucial towards building a more inclusive public history of activism and our cities. This year, the Archives invites students to continue this research focusing on the LGBTQ Collection. This is the fifth nonconsecutive year of this collaborative project that has involved a close team of historian/archivists, librarians, faculty, students/alumni, as well as the continued support of the Wikimedia NYC chapter - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:GLAM/La_Guardia_and_Wagner_Archives.

In our panel presentation, representative students and faculty from our team will discuss their project experiences and provide ideas for managing similar work in other educational settings. In the 2022-2023 academic year, LaGuardia Community College still faced a greatly reduced enrollment that made project recruitment challenging. Given the significantly reduced enrollment faced by the college in the 2022-2023 academic year, project recruitment posed a challenge. Based on past project year experiences, we arranged for faculty advisors to work closely with small teams consisting of 1-3 students each. Our student researcher team contributed to the entries related to LGBTQ+ activism and politics, starting entries including: St. Pat’s For All; Children of the Rainbow-First Grade Curriculum; New York City Gay Rights Bill of 1986; and HIV/AIDS in New York City, Housing section.

We would also like to foster discussion of questions like: How can we foster connections with other archives, museums, colleges and activist groups in order to make these kinds of Wikipedia projects more visible? How do we negotiate the issues relating to usage of primary sources when facilitating GLAM projects?

In addition, we would like to foster a discussion and review about Wikipedia’s original research policy and how to navigate institutional research into complying with the original research policy. Furthermore, a question for Wikipedians to resolve is how can Wikipedia safeguard student researchers from false accusations of spamming.
In March 2015, news about how Wikipedia entries on the New York Police Department (NYPD) and cases of police brutality were edited from NYPD locations for several years was widely reported. Some sections on police misconduct and the Civilian Complaint Review Board (CCRB) were removed in what appeared to be acts of censorship. (see: Weill, Kelly. “Edits to Wikipedia Pages on Bell, Garner, Diallo Traced to 1 Police Plaza.” Politico PRO, Politico, 13 Mar. 2015 ; ; ) Despite the headlines that suggested otherwise, these edits did not go unnoticed by the Wikipedia community.

In this presentation, LaGuardia Community College (CUNY) students and Wikipedia community members will discuss their experiences working on an ongoing GLAM project at the La Guardia and Wagner Archives where they conducted a year-long independent research project designed to help address this important area of New York City history where . This is the third year of this collaborative project, which began in 2016, which involved archivists, librarians and faculty, as well as the continued support of the Wikimedia NYC chapter - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:GLAM/La_Guardia_and_Wagner_Archives. The objective was to both increase online visibility of archival holdings while effectively introducing students to the process of archival research. This project also sought to involve them in establishing unwritten historical narratives that are crucial towards building a more inclusive public history of activism and our cities. This year’s student researcher team contributed to the entries related to NYPD cases of police brutality, police officer reform groups, and public relations and the CCRB. Their work highlighted the importance of archival collections to researching histories not well covered in secondary sources. There is an urgent need for historical work on the NYPD and on brutality cases past and present. We would also like to foster discussion of questions like: How can we foster connections with other archives, museums, colleges and activist groups in order to make these kinds of Wikipedia projects more visible? How do we negotiate the issues relating to usage of primary sources when facilitating GLAM projects?
AfroCROWD and the Wikimedia NYC chapter have long been pioneers in facilitating collaborative Wikipedia events such as this year’s “translatathon” that we plan to make the first of an ongoing annual series. The translatathon was hosted by the linguistically diverse LaGuardia Community College of the City University of New York (106 languages!), in Queens, New York, the most linguistically diverse borough in the United States (800 languages!)
In this presentation, organizers from AfroCROWD, LaGuardia Community College, Wikitongues and Wikimedia NYC will share how we planned this 2-day event and what we learned from the challenges that emerged before, after and during it. In particular, we would like to share our experiences using the translation tool and ask for help from the larger Wikipedia community in helping make future translation efforts more effective. We recorded 84 participants, both in person and online, with a special team contributing from France. Reporters from the student newspaper at LaGuardia Community College interviewed participants, and provided a helpful write up here: "Wikipedia Translat-a-thon".

Wikipedia is the one major, broadly participatory Internet platform whose design tends to counter "fake news." Evaluation of the quality of information sources is at the core of Wikipedia's approach; platforms like YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter are finding that they need to retrofit source evaluation into products that fundamentally emphasize sharing over deliberation.

That's a key premise that prompted digital polarization and media literacy expert Mike Caulfield to start WikiProject Newspapers, which aims to create 1,000 Wikipedia articles about notable local newspapers in the United States by December 2018. Recent research has suggested that information consumers are generally willing to do 90 seconds or so of research into the quality of a publication, if information is readily available; but many newspapers are difficult to research. In many cases, multiple decades of reporting have earned reviews from other newspapers, academic and government entities, and statewide prizes; but much of that information is obscured paywalls or other obstacles that make it challenging to discover. By summarizing such information into Wikipedia articles -- even very short ones -- Wikipedia editors can provide a resource that is republished in Google Knowledge Graph boxes, on Facebook pages, and elsewhere, helping numerous consumers of news evaluate the reliability of what they're reading.

This project is primarily defined by its content generation goal, but an essential tactic in meeting that goal is engaging new and existing Wikipedia editors. To that end, Mike recruited a charitable sponsor who will donate a $25 "bounty" to the charity "Room to Read" for each qualifying submission. He has also recruited several university instructors, who will assign their students to create Wikipedia articles, and submit them for review and/or expansion by more experienced Wikipedia editors.

We will present a midway report on the achievements of the project. The report may include:
* Notability: Our efforts to develop a notability guideline specific to newspapers.
* Research resources: How we have gone about curating research resources (such as online books about local newspapers) for use by project participants.
* WikiProject insights: What we have learned about running a WikiProject, including approaches to measuring and reporting success, and opportunities to collaborate with other projects.
* Wikidata: How we have approached Wikidata as an offshoot of this Wikipedia-focused project.
* Instructional materials: How we present Wikipedia tasks to new contributors.
* Relevant research: How research into media literacy and Wikipedia can inform a project like ours.

Following a brief presentation, we will invite participants to discuss how to structure WikiProjects which aim to rapidly generate content and/or engage new contributors in useful tasks. We will capture our notes and share them back in a Wikipedia project page, blog post, or similar.

On March 8, 2018, in honor of International Women’s Day, Merrilee Proffitt and I gave a presentation during a global conversation on 'women in the movement' about women in the [OCLC Wikipedia + Libraries: Better Together project https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/OCLC/A_Wikipedian-in-Residence_to_Engage_500_Librarians_and_their_Communities], which was nearing completion at the time. We were asked to present because the majority of the participants in the OCLC project self-identified as women. And with the project nearly complete, we were well positioned to share out insights about their experiences. But speaking about the project as a women-focused initiative was misnomer, in part because the focus was to train public library staff -- not women. But it was also true that we could report on women's experiences, because of the make up of the profession. In the United States, the majority of library staff are women.

In this presentation, I will speak about the frictions and opportunities in training people in gendered professions, such as library work. What should we keep in mind when we’re doing outreach to a profession that is, for instance, feminized? What does that even mean? And what kind of approach can be taken to amiloriate biases that have led to the gendering of professions?

I will begin to address these questions by describing how I looked to feminism and critical race theories and pedagogies for guidence in my work with the OCLC WebJunction team, as Wikipedian-in-Residence. I’ll give concrete examples of how feminism can translate into choices, from course recruitment decisions, content design, to defaults. In the presentation, I’ll be sure to critically reflect on the challenges that are raised serve a professional class industry sector dominated by a particular gender / race / class, and lessons this experience offers those of us in the Wikimedia movement keen to incorporate feminist pedagogy into outreach trainings materials and approaches.

The Wikipedia + Libraries project concluded with the release of the curated curriculum and course materials available for others to share and adapt under a CC BY SA 4.0 license, and these learnings will primarily be shared in a complementary talk; this presentation showcase selections of the examples used during the 2017 course instruction and communication.
--> #ReImaginingTheShift or The Role of Technology and Social Media in Language Activism/Advocacy for Historically Undervalued Languages -
A historically undervalued language is a language that suffers from systemic, social, and cultural degradation, exists in the shadow of a more dominant and socially “acceptable” language, and is spoken by historically disadvantaged and marginalized peoples. Speakers within these historically undervalued linguistic communities are often shamed for speaking their Mother Tongue, while being portrayed as “uneducated”, “unintelligent”, and “unworthy” of participating in mainstream societies. The people of Haiti, speakers of Haitian Creole, or Kreyòl Ayisyen, are part of one such language community that continues to undergo this heavy struggle: how to overcome the negative stereotype of being a speaker of a historically undervalued language like Haitian Creole and find a sustainable way to positively promote and preserve their language? In Haiti, despite the fact that the vast majority of the Haitian people speak and communicate in Kreyòl, they are often oppressively pushed outside of major spheres of life, such as education, politics, healthcare, etc, as French is the main language in which most affairs are conducted. Reclaiming the power of the Mother Tongue (i.e., Kreyòl) must involve taking the reins of information sharing. The use of new technologies such as Wikipedia and Social Media platforms can serve to center the conversation around the importance and necessity of the use of Kreyòl as a tool of empowerment for the Haitian people. For the past several years, as part of the Indigenous and Diasporic Language Consortium (IDLC), New York University (NYU) in conjunction with the Haitian Creole Language Institute of New York has been offering undergraduate level course in Haitian Creole. The courses have worked strongly with the WikiEdu platform to produce Wikipedia articles that place Haiti as their focus, contributing tens of thousands of word to Wikipedia. This presentation will focus on the NYU Haitian Creole courses as a case study in using Wikipedia as a tool for language advocacy by #ReImaginingTheShift, especially in academic spaces of higher-learning that have been historically non-diverse. The presentation will discuss how Wikipedia is used as a platform for more engagement around Haiti and how the Haitian Creole Wikipedia serves to empower speakers of Haitian Creole by facilitating more autonomous involvement in the creating and dissemination of information in Haitian Creole. The presentation will also focus on the importance of closely monitoring the Haitian Creole Wikipedia and encouraging a type of engagement that honors the language itself, centers Haitian people, and follows the rules of the Wikipedia platform. The presentation will be partially conducted in Haitian Creole.

Libraries hold large collections of periodical literature from
the 20th century that are of interest to Wikipedians, but that
are currently only available in print form or behind paywalls.
Yet much of this literature as late as the 1960s or even the
1980s is in the public domain in the US and can be placed online
by anyone interested, because copyright was not renewed, or other
copyright formalities were not observed. Until recently, though,
it has been very difficult or time-consuming to determine what periodical
literature is public domain due to factors like these,
and what is still under copyright.

In this presentation, I will show and discuss the results of
a project funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services
to make it much easier to clear up copyright uncertainties for
20th-century magazines, newspapers, scholarly journals, and other
periodical and serial literature. We have published a complete
inventory of all periodicals with active copyright renewals made
up to 1977, giving the issue dates for each periodical's first renewal. (Our
inventory complements an existing database at the Copyright Office where one
can look up renewals from 1978 onwards.) We have prepared a
step-by-step guide on how to use this inventory and other resources
to determine the US copyright status of periodical literature.
We are also converting this inventory into structured JSON data files
that are now interlinkable with Wikidata, and that can be enhanced
by interested Wikipedians and others.

We Wikipedians and librarians can use this data and guide to help clear copyrights
for material published in periodicals that could be digitized
from library collections and included or quoted in places like
Wikipedia or Wikisource. We can add further details about periodical
issue and contribution renewals that can make it easier to clear
copyrights to specific issues or works of interest published well
after 1922 (the usual stopping point for many digitization
projects). We can add or link to periodical contents and author
information that can help Wikipedians find sources of interest, clear
copyrights outside the US, and even track down rightsholders to
get permission to use their content. We can further integrate
this information with Wikidata to build up an open global knowledge base
of periodical literature and its rights, to support making as much
of it free to the world online as we can. Come to this presentation
to learn how, and to share ideas about making the most of these
resources.
This workshop targets educators who want to review the best identified options for using Wikidata as an education tool for university students, and who are not familiar with using Wikidata themselves.

Suddenly and urgently, the ability to work with structured data is becoming a necessary skill set in every field of study. While in the past educators have explained data analysis using small curated data sets, Wikidata presents the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of data science with a popular data set which everyone already uses through Google, Apple, Amazon, and other consumers. Uniquely, the Wikidata community is highly conscience of its social impact and is the leading advocate for free and open data, taking responsibility for its impact, giving credit where it is due, and protecting the commons. Using examples from Wikidata can make the understanding of data science in ways that arbitrary and theoretical examples cannot. Also students can actually contribute meaningfully to Wikidata.

This workshop will begin with a short presentation that educators can use to make the case for Wikidata in their own institution. It follows with a condensed overview of data science for beginners using Wikidata examples to explain the topics. As a group we will broadly review hundreds of distinct activities which a person may do in Wikidata in the context of how these activities can complement learning goals about working with datasets and Wikidata's place as an open data set in all fields of academia.

In the limited time of this workshop and considering that Wikidata is challenging to use, the remainder of the workshop will be a cycle of exercises, each a few minutes long, which an educator might present to a student group with limited time and short attention spans. Each exercise will teach both a broad concept in data science and a particular skill for engaging in Wikidata.

Participants in this workshop will gain the following:
#Wikidata ways for explaining beginner concepts in data science
#Experience using Wikidata workflows to accomplish distinct practical functions
#A script for presenting short Wikidata concepts themselves in their own institutions
#Understanding of options to ask for support in Wikidata peer support channels
;Abstract: The ARL Wikidata Task Force, a group of research library professionals and Wikimedians, is identifying issues, barriers, educational needs, and resource requirements for libraries to participate in Wikidata and Wikibase in their uses and applications of linked open data locally. Linked Open Data in libraries has been somewhat of a niche (at times abstract) specialty and the Task Force members believe that Wikidata -- with its strong community globally and easy to use tools -- can help make it more of a mainstream, tangible activity for libraries to improve discovery of local or institutional assets. ARL and the Wikimedia Foundation are aligned on many values, including openness, barrier-free access to information, and knowledge equity. By October, the Task Force will have released a draft paper for public comment, and will present its findings. The panel of members of the Task Force will also discuss the uses and applications of Wikidata in library and archival discovery and in collaborative, community-engaged resource description.
;Abstract:
: Disentangling interlanguage links across all Wikipedias by centralizing them in what would become Wikidata may have seemed an obvious solution; and centralizing facts from infoboxes only consequential. But things became more complicated when somewhere along the way Wikidata evolved into a full-fledged, collaboratively engineered ontology.
: Wikipedia pages represent subjects as viewed by the speakers of a language (and thus a certain culture, or limited set of cultures).
: Ontologies represent worldviews (albeit stringently formalized like, “A is a kind of B, which necessarily consists of parts C and D”), but being engineered by humans they inherently are cultural artifacts biased by their creators’ backgrounds.
: Wikidata, then, as a centralized knowledge base for all Wikipedias would have to somehow distill diversity into fixed formalisms, leave all the cultural baggage behind, and emerge as a supracultural ontology—an undoubtedly enticing prospect: explain the world once and just once. But to what extent is that realistic, with Wikidata still being human-edited? And to what extent is the part that is realistic even desirable, and to whom?
: As mindful tool creators and users we should view Wikidata as a machinery wielding (intellectual) power, thus raising several questions: Who edits Wikidata? What is their (cultural) background, and how does that inform the worldview encoded in Wikidata? Who are the Wikidata users to whom that worldview is applicable or helpful? And also, what about the Wikipedia editors who have to work with—or around—Wikidata?
: The specter of cultural imperialism—or how to avoid it—is among the issues thus raised; issues that become the more pressing the tighter Wikidata gets integrated into media ultimately consumed by or affecting humans, and call into question the vision of algorithmically written Wikipedia articles.
: As a more practical sideshow, we will also see how two of the main goals of Wikidata, centralizing interlanguage links and establishing a queriable ontology, are at odds with one another, and what could possibly be done about that.
: Workshop only: It is hoped that the attendees will represent a culturally and linguistically diverse group of Wikipedia/Wikidata editors. In a joint effort, attendees would then identify exemplary concepts and the respective
:* amenability for representation in a supracultural ontology like Wikidata,
:* difficulties with representation across different-language Wikipedias, and
;Abstract: Analyzing and reporting event attendance and editor retention is crucial for both WMF-grantee reporting and guiding organizations in evolving their events, but also notoriously difficult to achieve. Wikimedia NYC has prototyped a method for reporting attendances across multiple events based on Dashboard data. Key features include separate reports for total attendances as well as unique editors, identification of editors recruited in the context of events, identification of returning editors, analysis of coattendances, i.e., events with an overlap in attendees as compared to a given event, and tracking editors (both established and newly recruited) across events.
Workshop only: While this has been useful for the chapter both internally and with reporting to WMF, there seems to be no agreed-upon standard definition of what constitutes ‘retention‘ of an editor. As a consequence, for such analysis and reporting methods to be of comparative value across organizations, some discussion and standardization would be required, which a workshop might serve to get started with. Furthermore, in a workshop setting, attendees from other organizations managing their events and attendee records in Dashboard would be able to experiment with applying the Wikimedia NYC methods to their own context.
See #Appendix some examples of Wikimedia NYC metric reports generated using the proposed method.
AfroCROWD will also share how they organized a smaller, more advanced translatathon in June 2018 at Long Island University with the NSF-funded REU Site Intersection of Linguistics, Language, and Culture Program.
;Abstract: This case study traces the shift in an extra credit assignment in a graduate research course from using Twitter to expand one's network and access subject-matter expertise to contributing reliable and credible content as an active editor of Wikipedia. The six week intensive course in a management and systems degree program focuses on articulating problems in practice, providing evidence for developing researchable questions, and conducting a literature review. The course is demanding, and the Wikipedia extra credit is offered to help students augment their grades through contributing to Wikipedia. The assistance of the Wiki Education Foundation was invaluable in developing this assignment, as many of their offerings are based on a traditional full semester course with the editing spread throughout the curriculum requirements, and not as an extra-credit-only course learning opportunity. This study utilizes an explanatory case study methodology informed by narrative and teacher self-study.
;Abstract:

I’m proposing a panel with students, faulty, staff and leadership of the HBCU experience with how to increase sustained participation of people of color, particularly on the collegiate level with all of its passion, resources and sustained alumni loyalty. And explore whether or not creating chapters - unofficial or official - on all of the 101 HBCUs throughout the country, would be a viable route to create a sustainable model of retention for diversity of content and editors on Wikipedia, to be eventually replicated at all of the universities, institutions and other such organizations throughout the world.

As the current graduate intern for Wikimedia’s AfroCROWD, and a member of Wikimedia NYC (as well a graduate student at Columbia’s Oral History Master’s program where I’m #MappingFreedom - creating a database of all of the “freedom colonies” who resisted Western colonialism) I’m well aware of the representation, equity, and diversity and inclusion issues with Wikipedia. I’m also the descendant of the HBCU experience in America - both of my parents are HBCU grads, as well as 2 of my siblings and my only college-aged nephew - someone from all branches of my family has attended an HBCU since the founding of the first one, Cheyney, in 1837.

The HBCUs are a plethora of knowledge and a repository of culture, not just of the African-American experience, but of the Native and European-American experience as well - it encompasses all of the American experience, and beyond, the African and European diasporas included. My godmother has spent her career in HBCU administration, becoming the president of Langston University, and current chancellor of Hampton University where she raised her children - my god-siblings - on campus during our childhoods (I grew up not too far). Hampton U is the location of the country’s oldest museum dedicated to African-American history (and it doesn’t even have a wikipedia article dedicated to it), and is representative of all of the HBCUs as repositories of culture waiting to be made into content, using their most devoted base - students, faculty and staff- to mobilize a sustainable model of equitable content creation and editors, and equitable representation of diversity and inclusion.

The panel would consist of a cross section of HBCU students/alum, faculty, staff, administration and a representative of Wikimedia/Wikipedia. I’m also proposing a separate #WikiHBCU workshop where any and everyone interested can participate in an HBCU-inspired & themed Edit-A-thon and Record-A-thon where articles related to the HBCUs are created, explored and dissected.

;Length of presentation: Panel: 45 mins, Workshop: 75 mins

;Preferred room size: Thinking 50 -100 people will show up at both panel and workshop
;Abstract:

Wikipedia student organizations at colleges and universities present a unique opportunity for student Wikipedians to engage their higher-education setting and perform effective Wikimedia outreach. A student organization can reach students and faculty alike, and oftentimes has access to resources and a network that a conventional independent Wikimedia organization does not have.

Wikipedia Connection, a student organization at the Ohio State University, is about to celebrate its third anniversary. The student-run organization, with the support of library faculty, has hosted edit-a-thons, weekly workshops, a photo event, and more on-campus. The 2017-18 school year was the first year where the founders of the club passed on leadership to new members, who learned how to edit Wikipedia after joining the organization. This presentation will cover the organizations history, and provide insights into running the organization, such as:

* What are the necessary ingredients to run a successful Wikipedia student club?
* What are the key challenges to running a Wikipedia student organization, compared to other Wikimedia groups and affiliates?
* How does a student organization attract and retain student editors?
* What sort of resources does a university student organization have that other Wikimedia affiliates may not have access to?
* What are the differences between running an edit-a-thon for students vs. running a general public edit-a-thon?

The presentation will also allow the current student leaders to provide insights into what it is like to learn how to edit Wikipedia through a student organization, the challenges of turnover, and the future of the club.
;Abstract: The Wikipedia + Libraries: Better Together program was an online training program for over 250 librarians and library workers in US public libraries. The program, which was run by OCLC's WebJunction team, sought to "meet librarians where they are" and helped them gain familiarity with Wikipedia and to develop their own engagement plans for incorporating Wikipedia in their work.
The WMF Community Tech team is working on a tool to help event organizers create, run and generate reports about editathons and similar events. In this session, I’ll discuss the research we’ve completed and the initial plans we will have produced for such a tool by the time of the conference. The sessions goal: to bring event organizers together for a discussion about their needs, to gather feedback on plans for the first version of the Event Tool (working title), and to generate ideas for future iterations.

How do we negotiate the issues relating to usage of primary sources when facilitating GLAM projects?
;Abstract: The dreams of democracy that accompanied the emergence of the internet seem, in retrospect, naive and idealistic. It has been said that today it is easier to imagine the end of the world via ecological calamity or nuclear destruction than it is to imagine a new form of social organization. The same could be said about health inequities. The idea that poverty could be eradicated is shrugged off as unrealistic. A deep cynicism pervades public health culture that increasingly focuses on risk reduction rather than a positive vision of the future of humanity. Just over 100 years ago, the first school of public health was opened in Baltimore, Maryland. At that time, areas of professional expertise included engineering to ensure city design would be healthier with clean water and waste disposal. Today, no public health training tracks focus on the digital infrastructure needed to cultivate advances in health at the population level. Wikipedia, as one of the few platforms designed for the public good, remains the best example of a digital platform designed to provide synthetic understanding of many public health topics. However, it also represents the limited imagination and resources that have been dedicated to designing our digital infrastructure in order to make the collective knowledge of human history as useable as possible to improve health globally. This session will begin with an overview of my experience teaching undergraduate and graduate students using Wikipedia as a way to rethink the platforms that exist (both political and technical) to advance the science and practice of public health. It will further propose a model for partnerships between a number of disciplines: computer science, graphic design, media studies, cultural theory, history, fiction, and epidemiology that could cultivate digital platforms to build a global public health movement.
--> Organizing Art+Feminism edit-a-thons can be an overwhelming process for first-time organizers, and especially for higher education instructors that seek to organize these events with their courses. This workshop offers participants with a plethora of materials that will assist them with project management of edit-a-thons. Drawing on our experience both organizing and researching Art+Feminism edit-a-thons at our institutions, which include both a small liberal arts historically black college (HBCU) for women and a mid-size public university, we will work with our participants to develop a plan for organizing edit-a-thons in their communities towards the end of making the most out of edit-a-thons, which strongly benefit to the Wikimedia movement, practicing critical digital literacy, and representing local citizenship objectives. Through our workshop, we hope that more organized edit-a-thons lead to an increase in editor recruitment and more sustained equitable participation in Wikipedia.
How do participants want to improve their organization and research of edit-a-thons?

Participants will introduce themselves with their writing prompt (e.g. their first and last name, institutional/organizational affiliation, etc.)

;The Problem of Organizing Edit-a-thons (10-15 minutes)

What are the challenges of organizing an Art+Feminism edit-a-thon?

Presentation: Facilitators 1 and Speaker 2 will provide an overview of some of the issues we’ve encountered

[Resources: Show Issues via Slide Deck]

Discussion: Facilitators 1 and 2 will have a brief discussion with the audience regarding some of the problems they have encountered or anticipate when organizing (and researching) edit-a-thons

[Resources: Display a link to the Google Document on the projector (Note: participants will receive a link to edit and comment on this document). Facilitators will document audience concerns, and this document will be linked in the slide deck, which is part of the compendium of materials that we share with the entire Wiki Conference North America and beyond.]

;Project Management Solutions (15 minutes)

How should edit-a-thons be organized to address the challenges presented by the speakers, and discussed by the audience?

Facilitator 1 will distribute an organizer kit to the audience, providing the audience with few minutes to look over it.

Presentation: Facilitators 1 and 2 will quickly go over the resource, taking the time to discuss how that organizer kit will assist the audience and going over applications of this type of organizational design--in terms of how it is conducive to equity, linking to courses, and community activism and etc.

;Data Collection of the Event (10-15 minutes)

How do Art+Feminism edit-a-thons serve as a useful site of research?

Presentation: Facilitator 1 will transition the workshop to matters of data collection by discussing how better organization includes a research component that allows for improved organization in the future, as well as building knowledge across communities of interest. In particular, Facilitator 1 will refer to the sample user/participant survey included in the sample organizer kit to briefly discuss how to collect general data about the event. Both Facilitators 1 and 2 will discuss how to collect data about this event for scholarly publication.

[Resources: Refer to the slide deck that links to organizer kit, which includes a description of applications of research, as well as links to a GitHub link with sample research instruments (survey designs, interview questions, etc.]

;Develop an Organization and Research Plan (20-25 minutes)

How do I apply these workshop models to my own local Art+Feminism edit-a-thon event?

Facilitators 1 and 2 will distribute an organizer worksheet to participants that will guide them in their process of adapting workshop models to their own organizing needs based on their local communities/institutions

Group Breakouts: Facilitators will break up the audience into random groups. Before the groups breakout, facilitators 1 and 2 will note that data collection is among the first considerations on the worksheet activity. Groups will be asked to consider the role of research in their organization plans and its relationship to the organization and overall value of their edit-a-thon beyond the event. During breakouts, group members will rely on the scaffolding offered by the worksheets--which include the opportunity for participants to extend, augment, and/or revise sample research instruments for their own events

[Resources: The organizer kit will be distributed and accessible as an electronic and physical handout. For the following activity, the audience will be highly encouraged to utilize the online document]
;Abstract: In an effort to provide increased access to library materials and to provide students with the necessary skills to evaluate and contribute to the digital information landscape, staff at UT Arlington libraries designed and implemented a program to incorporate Wikipedia into classrooms and events on campus.
:
Staff began by participating the Wikipedia + Libraries Better Together program and building an in house training regimen to learn to edit and engage with the Wikipedia community. The libraries developed outreach activities on campus to gauge the interest of faculty relating Wikipedia. During Open Access week, the libraries hosted a Wikimedian-in-residence who walked attendees through his 11 Years as a Wikipedian. Following his presentation, a panel of faculty from across the Dallas-Fort Worth area discussed using Wikipedia based assignments in the classroom, and how their projects affected student learning. Faculty from campus engaged in a discussion over the merits, problems, and opportunities Wikipedia offers students. Four faculty members from the Women’s and Gender Studies program agreed to participate in a pilot program incorporating a Wikipedia based assignments into their spring courses. The libraries provided the resources, training material, and support for the students during the semester and hosted an edit-a-thon called HerStory-Incorporating Her back into History.

:
HerStory offered students, staff and the community the opportunity to contribute content to overlooked and marginalized groups on Wikipedia. With over 60 editors contributing to HerStory, the edit-a-thon shattered expectations. With 3 articles created, 74 edited, 63 editors added 12.7K words resulting in 3.15M article views to date. As Wikipedia offers libraries a way to serve 21st-century information needs, UT Arlington Libraries is continuing to build off of the success of HerStory, harnessing Wikipedia to improve access to knowledge, teach digital literacy, and to empower our students.

;Abstract: Wikitongues is a nonprofit volunteer organization focused on sustaining cultural diversity by safeguarding every language in the world. Through a network of hundreds of volunteers around the world, we collect video recordings of languages and publish them under creative commons licensing to facilitate free educational use. We also compile word lists, phrasebooks, and dictionaries, including open-source technology to make it easy for language students, educators, and activists to produce their own linguistic documentation for the benefit of their communities. This lightning talk will serve as an introduction to our growing relationship with the Wikimedia movement — as a newly formed user group, we're contributing multilingual content to the Commons and promoting the better integration of oral knowledge into the Wikimedia framework.
;Abstract:
One of the biggest challenges for implementing successful outreach efforts, especially for those who have not done event planning and implementation before, is to develop a workable plan to help collaborators evaluate, implement, and evaluate an idea and its potential outcome. This is especially important when working with new collaborators who are unfamiliar with Wikimedia and how it works. How to we proceed and move forward? To be successful, you need to develop a simple planning map so that everyone involved will know were the project is headed.

As a long-time program planner for non-profit historical organization, the presenter has used several types of planning methods over the years, but keeping things simple works best. This hands-on workshop will guide Wikimedians through a simple, logical model for evaluating, planning, and implementing an idea, special program, or community event to build new collaborations and new partnerships with non-Wikimedians.

During the workshop, participants will use a simple logic model to guide the process forward and keep the collaboration on track. This includes identifying potential collaborators and resources to evaluating the potential outcomes of an idea. We’ll discuss the who, what, where, when, why, and how of collaborating with GLAMs and libraries, especially those not already involved in Wikipedia projects, and what is needed to make the partnership successful. The presenter, who has worked in a museum/historical archive for nearly twenty years, will share some insider tips and real-life experiences for working with non-profit organizations, as well as providing some simple planning tools and resources for getting started. Handouts, helpful links, and other resources will be provided. The workshop will also include a lively format for small group discussions, so be prepared to have some fun and become more confident that you have identified the necessary inputs and defined outputs for your idea.
Wikipedia has a problem and it is unconscious. Implicit bias is unconscious bias that affects our actions, behaviors, and understanding without us even being aware of it. Implicit bias is learned through socialization beginning in childhood. It is reinforced through social interactions with like-minded individuals and through messages in social media, literature, and other cultural and environmental methods. Without challenging our biases and reflecting on how they impact our behavior, our biases can become problematic. They already have become problematic for Wikipedia.

Come learn about preliminary findings from this in-depth investigation of implicit bias’ impact on English Wikipedia. The data from this proposed project will help the community to better understand the problem implicit bias poses for Wikipedia and what can be done about it.
;Abstract: Some academic institutions have embraced Wikipedia, but there are still varied opinions on the value of Wikipedia in academia in general. There is a healthy degree of skepticism about the accuracy of information in Wikipedia, and faculty tend to steer their students away from using it. The way that information is produced on Wikipedia – anyone can add and change information – differs from the traditional peer-review model that academics are used to. These are some of the realities that form a barrier between Wikipedia and the academic sphere. However, framing Wikipedia as a learning opportunity for students and demonstrating the capacity for it to build skills in information and digital literacy, public writing, and research can be eye-opening for faculty. Explaining to instructors how they can contribute as subject matter experts can also be a way to get them more engaged with Wikipedia and lead them to understand how Wikipedia and academic institutions have shared goals.

:In her career as a librarian and instructional designer, Jennifer Sutcliffe, Educational Analyst at Emory University, has heard and considered many different perspectives on Wikipedia in higher education. Along with like-minded colleagues at Emory, she has made efforts to involve the Emory community in editing and teaching with Wikipedia. Through training, outreach, and education, this group encourages faculty to look at Wikipedia as an opportunity to further their pedagogy and scholarly work and bring it to a broader audience. In this brief talk, she will describe how she has learned to get faculty and others in the academic sphere to respond positively to Wikipedia by framing it as a living environment for teaching and learning. She will discuss some of the recent grant-funded efforts by the Emory Libraries Wikipedia Group – such as organizing edit-a-thons, hosting a full-day Wikipedia workshop, and hiring a part-time Wikipedian in Residence – to increase engagement with Wikipedia on campus and encourage faculty to contribute their expert knowledge, boost the signal of their research areas and educate the general population.
AfroCROWD and the Wikimedia NYC chapter have long been pioneers in facilitating collaborative Wikipedia events such as this year’s “translatathon” that we plan to make the first of an ongoing annual series. The translatathon was hosted by the linguistically diverse LaGuardia Community College of the City University of New York (106 languages!), in Queens, New York, the most linguistically diverse borough in the United States (800 languages!). (https://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/29/nyregion/29lost.html) In this presentation, organizers from AfroCROWD, LaGuardia Community College, Wikitongues and Wikimedia NYC will share how we planned this 2-day event and what we learned from the challenges that emerged before, after and during it. In particular, we would like to share our experiences using the translation tool, and ask for help from the larger Wikipedia community in helping make future translation efforts more effective. We recorded 84 participants, both in person and online, with a special team contributing from France. Reporters from the student newspaper at LaGuardia Community College interviewed participants, and provided a helpful write up here: "Wikipedia Translat-a-thon". AfroCROWD will also share how they organized a smaller, more advanced translatathon in June 2018 at Long Island University with the NSF-funded REU Site Intersection of Linguistics, Language and Culture Program.
Wikipedia’s gender gaps, the result of a predominance of male editors and the correlating uneven participation and coverage of marginalized groups, are by now both well-known and well-documented (Cohen, 2011; Collier and Bear, 2012; Glott, Schmidt, and Ghosh, 2010; Gruwell, 2015; Wadewitz, 2013). This presentation reports on an attempt to interrogate these gaps in coverage as they manifest in discipline-specific representations, especially representations related to the academic fields of computers and writing, digital literacy, and digital rhetoric. Preliminary analysis of Wikipedia articles related to these fields demonstrates a severe lack of coverage, which, given these fields’ attention to digital literacies, should be improved. This presentation reports on a bibliometric method of citation analysis (Eyman, 2015; Kaur, Radicchi, and Menczer, 2013) across five Wikipedia articles related to these fields in order to show how the gender gap manifests in the absence of cited research by non-male scholars. To address these content gaps, this project moves beyond analysis to define and engage in acts of critical digital praxis within Wikipedia, asking students to edit the encyclopedia to improve representation of women and women’s research in computers and writing and digital rhetoric fields. Descriptions of such editorial work and its implications, furthermore, provide a model for disciplinary praxis, and graduate pedagogy, in which students and professor work together to engage in the critique and remediation of Wikipedia’s disciplinary content and gender gaps. As a larger example of critical digital analysis and participation, this presentation also describes efforts to unpack and critique the ways in which media, even those professing an open-access and democratic ethic, perpetuate social hegemonies of marginalization.
Anyone may join for a beginner's introduction to the infrastructure of civility in Wikimedia projects. The focus will be on the workflow of keeping safe spaces in Wikimedia's online and in-person spaces. While individuals personally handle some tasks, many aspects of Wikimedia friendly space are a result of infrastructure built into the design of the Wikimedia user experience.

Presenter Lane Rasberry briefly describes some past research in Wikimedia civility. Following this, a researcher from the University of Virginia presents "Machine learning to predict Wikimedia user blocks" an ongoing research project by graduate student researchers from the Data Science Institute at the University of Virginia. In this project students seek to use machine learning to automate the detection of civility problems to flag for further human review.
This talk will present an upcoming article, "A Case for improving the quality of health information on Wikipedia", published based on outcomes from series of classroom Wikipedia editing events documented at :en:wp:Touro.

Wikipedia is a popular source of health information. Anyone may edit Wikipedia. Annually from 2016-18 as part of a school program three classes of physical therapy students at Touro College edited Wikipedia articles in the scope of their studies. Wikipedia's analytics tools give insight into outcomes by reporting pageviews of edited articles and editorial response to student contributions. The authors report that publishing in Wikipedia is useful as a learning exercise for students and a strategy for sharing general reference information to a large and relevant audience at low cost.

Beyond typical classroom presentations this talk will report how it measured the persistence of student edit contributions to find that all student contributions passed review and remained in Wikipedia.
See Offline Internet Resources for Latin America for the on-wiki project page.

Over the past three years I've been overseeing research at Columbia related to using offline Wikipedia for education in Latin America. My graduate students at Columbia's School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) have benefited from Wikimedia Foundation travel grants to conduct research in Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, and the Quechua region of Peru.

The first year, Cuba, found that offline digital media could play an important part in education in Latin American regions that lack connectivity, or where data plans are too expensive for many inhabitants. We learned that there was considerable acceptance of Wikipedia as a tool for learning among the educational community there.

I presented our findings at Wikimania in San Diego, and met Adam Holt from Internet-in-a-Box, who connected me to Dr. James Heilman from Wiki Project Med, the Wikipedia medical program. I reached out to colleagues at Mount Sinai Global Health in NYC and the Wikipedia Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

Together, we designed a program to research feasibility in rural medical clinics on the Haitian border in the Dominican Republic. We conducted it in the spring of 2017.

The project is described in the video Offline Innovation - Bridging the Digital Divide in Latin America.

There was a follow-up summer research project, also conducted in partnership with a Mount Sinai physician, in clinics in the DR and indigenous areas in Guatemala and Peru.

This resulted in an invitation from the Peruvian Ministry of Education to conduct research seeing whether Internet-in-a-Box and Wikipedia content could support their initiatives in rural areas, particularly among the Quechua areas surrounding Cusco. I oversaw another team of graduate field research in the spring of 2018. It found keen interest among Quechua school administrators.

It resulted in a summer placement of a student to conduct a pilot with five devices in five Quechua schools. The teachers and administrators have been particularly interested in Wikipedia's Quechua articles, and Spanish articles relating to vocational education, including agriculture and construction work.

The student, Harold Cardenas Lema, h will return to write up his findings next week. I have advised him to apply for funding to come present them in Columbus. (He is a Cuban university professor who used Wikipedia in his classes in Cuba. As a result of our contact, he became the first non-exile Cuban student to enroll at SIPA since the Revolution. He is interested in supporting Wikipedia work in Cuba after he completes his degree.)

Columbia is in the process of documenting the Peru research as an online Case Study, which will be available later this year.

The medical side of the project is continuing under the direction of former Mount Sinai physician Sam Zidovetski. He has been working closely with James Heilman to improve and add open source professional content.
;Abstract: Systemic bias limits Wikipedia's completeness and quality of coverage of people with marginalized identities. It also systematically reduces their visibility within the narratives of larger entities of which those marginalized people played a role, and often distorts the role they did played. As such, any systemic bias based on social marginalization—which may occur along the lines of gender, race, language, sexuality, disability or other status—requires a multifaceted campaign to write the affected people back into the world's largest encyclopedia. Success means going beyond the heroic efforts of individual editors to expand coverage.
This talk considers four strategies that can be pursued either through classroom teaching or coordinated editing campaigns: (1) campaigns to write new articles on marginalized people, (2) campaigns to rewrite articles on topics that affect them, (3) the introduction of new maps that literally include communities that have been written out of history, and (4) the application of scholarly understandings of systemic bias to systematically review, and eventually improve, Wikipedia articles. Thus far, most Wikipedia inclusion drives have focused on the first strategy. I suspect that many teachers within the Education program have pursued the second strategy. In this talk, I lay out some possible assignments or online campaigns to move forward the third and fourth. Using existing public domain maps, could facilitate putting indigenous communities back into US history at all levels. And drawing on scholarship in history, women's and gender studies, and ethnic studies, we can identify a variety of ways that marginalized people can be written back into history that differ from the "Add marginalized people and stir" model.
As presenter, I draw on three rounds of teaching a "Human Rights of Indigenous Peoples" course and twelve years of experience as a Wikipedia editor.
SNAC (Social Networks and Archival Context) is a tool developed to address the phenomena archival diaspora by allowing archivists, librarians, and scholars to jointly maintain information about the people documented in archival collections. SNAC demonstrates the feasibility of separating the description of persons, families, and organizations—including their socio-historical contexts—from the description of the historical resources that are the primary evidence of their lives and work. A key objective is to provide researchers with convenient, integrated access to historical collections held by multiple private and public archives and libraries around the world while also setting the stage for a cooperative program for maintaining information about the people documented in the collections. SNAC also has the power to link “creators to creators” in context provided by librarians and archivists.

This presentation will introduce the Wikipedia community to the tool, its research and development, and where the project is currently headed by examining examples.
;Abstract: A role that Wikipedia increasingly plays in higher education is addressed by presenting the results of several rounds of Wikipedia editing assignments in university Linguistics classrooms. Unlike editathons--which are valuable events, but ones where group members are either already interested in learning Wikipedia editing or already knowledgeable about their subject--students in the classroom are often learning both of these at the same time. Linguistics as a discipline is unevenly represented in Wikipedia (Halavais 2008), with topics such as under documented and minority languages and female linguists having particularly low coverage, as is seen for women’s biographical pages in general (Reagle & Rhue 2011, Moravec 2018). So a need exists to encourage editors to bring their subject knowledge to new or preliminary pages on a variety of linguistic topics. Likewise, since Wikipedia editors are still more often male (Wagner et al. 2016, Cabrera et al 2018), while students in linguistics are more often female (LSA Annual Report 2018), then bringing familiarity with Wikipedia editing skills to this student body provides a way to train and increase the number of female editors. I discuss my experience teaching three courses that have incorporated Wikipedia editing assignments for linguists: within a single student’s honors project, within a large class of seniors, and within a small graduate seminar. Articles selected for improvement were start and stub pages that were relevant topics to each class and were assessed as being of mid-level importance, including both linguistic concepts and biographical pages. Besides building up a familiarity with content readings on the topics of the pages that they improved, students developed research and writing skills with Wikipedia that they will take to offline projects in other classes: determining what the most valued sources on entry-level topics are, and who the key names in the field are; thinking about hierarchy and taxonomy within a discipline, e.g., which new pages could more usefully be sub paragraphs of existing pages; identifying and evaluating primary vs. secondary sources; tracing copyright holders of images; leaving an evidence trail of citations; and explaining their reasons for editing someone else’s work. With each iteration, I’ve learned to plan in time for the range of skills that students are developing. They grapple with finding and responding on talk pages, editing on their phones, and saving formatting, while also acquiring linguistic concepts and learning to present language data. The field ends up with richer online coverage, Wikipedia gets a more diverse set of editors, and the students acquire better skills in explaining a topic to a larger audience.
Utilizing Wikipedia as a core aspect of teaching pedagogy has well documented benefits (McDowell 2016). In this paper I expand upon the prior large-N data survey analysis of the benefits of Wikipedia via examining case studies of four courses across two distinct colleges. Engaging college students has the capacity to increase the diversity of Wikipedia editors and make the Wikipedia environment more inclusive, though this may vary by course and institution type. Relying on my own experience teaching with the Wiki Educational Foundation Dashboard at both an Historically Black College and University (HBCU) and at predominantly White institution (PWI), I explicate the distinct contributions and challenges of teaching in both environments. The former may be expected to increase the diversity of Wikipedia to a greater extent than the latter but the relative diversity within a classroom can also have disparate impacts on student page selection and peer review processes. In addition, different institutional contexts, the specific course varied with minority politics courses at the HBCU assigned to develop Wikipedia pages and international politics courses assigned to develop Wikipedia pages at the PWI. More consistent across course and institutional contexts was the preponderance of cis-women students of traditional college age (18-24) as contributors, thus this paper will also examine the role of women contributors as a distinct voice community.
Can artificial intelligence do automated writing of Wikipedia articles? No, perhaps machine learning can make recommendations to match published reliable sources to Wikipedia articles which could summarize and cite them. For example, if there is an article about a particular medical condition, could there be an automated process for a bot to recommend that article on the talk page of the relevant Wikipedia article?

Cochrane is a nonprofit organization and publisher of academic systematic reviews of medical guidelines. The Wikimedia community has recommended the articles as reliable sources for medical content since at least 2010, yet human labor has not yet matched many thousands of their publications to the Wikipedia articles where a wiki editor could summarize them.

This talk will give a brief overview of the quality control process in Wikipedia, a description of source citations, and present the Cochrane Collaboration Article and citation matching tool development project.
Wiki editors and other researchers use citations to show where they get the information they publish. Collecting citation information may seem like a humble and bookish wiki pastime. Perhaps instead it is a fundamental change in the human experience, starting with a big change to the wiki experience.

Scholia is a Wikidata viewer which presents academic profiles of researchers, universities, publications, and academic topics. It generates visualizations from WikiCite information, which itself is a project to create Wikidata items for information sources.

Since the founding of Wikipedia the Wiki community has discussed using structured data for the management of citations. What is less discussed are the other ways in which citation information generates useful insights. For example, if Wikidata has citation information for publications, then it can also generate lists of all papers by an author, or show the topics on which a particular university publishes most frequently, or show when and where various topics became popular subjects of publication.

This presentation will demonstrate how to view profiles in Wikidata, why they matter, what this means for the future of Wikimedia projects, and how this open data will elevate Wikimedia projects to change the world in yet another big way.
