;Abstract: The ARL Wikidata Task Force, a group of research library professionals and Wikimedians, is identifying issues, barriers, educational needs, and resource requirements for libraries to participate in Wikidata and Wikibase in their uses and applications of linked open data locally. Linked Open Data in libraries has been somewhat of a niche (at times abstract) specialty and the Task Force members believe that Wikidata -- with its strong community globally and easy to use tools -- can help make it more of a mainstream, tangible activity for libraries to improve discovery of local or institutional assets. ARL and the Wikimedia Foundation are aligned on many values, including openness, barrier-free access to information, and knowledge equity. By October, the Task Force will have released a draft paper for public comment, and will present its findings. The panel of members of the Task Force will also discuss the uses and applications of Wikidata in library and archival discovery and in collaborative, community-engaged resource description.
This workshop targets educators who want to review the best identified options for using Wikidata as an education tool for university students, and who are not familiar with using Wikidata themselves.

Suddenly and urgently, the ability to work with structured data is becoming a necessary skill set in every field of study. While in the past educators have explained data analysis using small curated data sets, Wikidata presents the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of data science with a popular data set which everyone already uses through Google, Apple, Amazon, and other consumers. Uniquely, the Wikidata community is highly conscience of its social impact and is the leading advocate for free and open data, taking responsibility for its impact, giving credit where it is due, and protecting the commons. Using examples from Wikidata can make the understanding of data science in ways that arbitrary and theoretical examples cannot. Also students can actually contribute meaningfully to Wikidata.

This workshop will begin with a short presentation that educators can use to make the case for Wikidata in their own institution. It follows with a condensed overview of data science for beginners using Wikidata examples to explain the topics. As a group we will broadly review '''[[:d:Wikidata:Wikidata curricula/Activities|hundreds of distinct activities which a person may do in Wikidata]]''' in the context of how these activities can complement learning goals about working with datasets and Wikidata's place as an open data set in all fields of academia.

In the limited time of this workshop and considering that Wikidata is challenging to use, the remainder of the workshop will be a cycle of exercises, each a few minutes long, which an educator might present to a student group with limited time and short attention spans. Each exercise will teach both a broad concept in data science and a particular skill for engaging in Wikidata.

Participants in this workshop will gain the following:
#Wikidata ways for explaining beginner concepts in data science
#Experience using Wikidata workflows to accomplish distinct practical functions
#A script for presenting short Wikidata concepts themselves in their own institutions
#Understanding of options to ask for support in Wikidata peer support channels
;Abstract: Academic libraries often have databases of information. It is possible to automatically match a database to corresponding Wikidata items with the Mix'n'Match tool. I'll walk through the process of how to import a database into Mix'n'Match from start to finish. I'll start with evaluating a database to see if it should have its own property, and how to propose a new property on Wikidata. I'll explain how the Mix'n'Match upload tools work, and when it is better to try to manually upload your database. I'll show how to approve automatic matches, and recommend it as an introductory editing task for librarians. For unmatched entries, I'll briefly go over Wikidata's notability criteria and when to make a new Wikidata item for an unmatched item. If there's time, I'll demonstrate a few SPARQL queries surrounding a Mix'n'Match database. For this instruction, I'll draw on my own experience manually uploading one database and getting a property approved for another.

If this proposal is accepted, I'll ask Magnus more about exactly how items are matched and how the scraping import tool works and incorporate the information into my presentation.

;Length of presentation: 20 minutes

;Special requests: I am open to collaborating with another person on a longer presentation. I'm definitely not an expert, but I'm happy to share what I've learned.
“Cultural heritage is an important part of the knowledge Wikipedia collects and disseminates.” -Wiki Loves Monuments

When participating in the [https://www.oclc.org/en/member-stories/wikipedia-libraries.html OCLC Wikipedia+Libraries training], one librarian told a story. A patron came to her to find information about a small town on the Texas-Mexico boarder. She had a choice: create a list of resources and educate one patron, or create a Wikipedia page and educate uncounted others. She chose the latter and reached over 400 people in the first few weeks.

Large swaths of North America are without Wikipedia coverage. This is cultural heritage that is undocumented and unknown to much of the world. As time continues, the risk of losing this precious content increases. These risks range from new developments destroying physical cultural heritage to generations taking their accumulated knowledge with them as they age and pass on from this world.

Wiki Loves Your Community proposes combining several valuable initiatives in the Wiki-community. First, we will model after the very successful Wiki Loves Monuments initiative. Second, we will encourage authorship of content by local historical societies and GLAM institutions, which already possess a wealth of knowledge and people invested in the preservation of information. Third, we will encourage the local communities to get involved in content curation. They know the importance of notable features of their local communities. Finally, this project hopes to utilize every community’s under-appreciated population: retired people! They have the maturity to know about certain historically critical aspects of communities and tell the stories that connect us all.

Eventually as the project scales, additional aspects will be included from other successful projects. This includes, for example, utilizing a grid illustrating the geography covered and not yet covered by content. This would be similar to the coverage illustration of [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geograph_Britain_and_Ireland Geograph Britain and Ireland]. The hope is this project would start in North America and be a template project, structured yet flexible encough, that other communities around the world could copy and adjust as needed.

Come learn about how you can help make this project a success.
;Abstract: In an effort to provide increased access to library materials and to provide students with the necessary skills to evaluate and contribute to the digital information landscape, staff at UT Arlington libraries designed and implemented a program to incorporate Wikipedia into classrooms and events on campus.
:
Staff began by participating the Wikipedia + Libraries Better Together[https://www.webjunction.org/explore-topics/wikipedia-libraries.html] program and building an in house training regimen to learn to edit and engage with the Wikipedia community. The libraries developed outreach activities on campus to gauge the interest of faculty relating Wikipedia. During Open Access week, the libraries hosted a Wikimedian-in-residence who walked attendees through his 11 Years as a Wikipedian. Following his presentation, a panel of faculty from across the Dallas-Fort Worth area discussed using Wikipedia based assignments in the classroom, and how their projects affected student learning. Faculty from campus engaged in a discussion over the merits, problems, and opportunities Wikipedia offers students. Four faculty members from the Women’s and Gender Studies program agreed to participate in a pilot program incorporating a Wikipedia based assignments into their spring courses. The libraries provided the resources, training material, and support for the students during the semester and hosted an edit-a-thon called HerStory-Incorporating Her back into History.[http://www.theshorthorn.com/news/uta-libraries-hosts-wikipedia-editing-event-to-honor-women-s/article_a722f6c4-3088-11e8-aa6f-133fa8b49245.html]

:
HerStory offered students, staff and the community the opportunity to contribute content to overlooked and marginalized groups on Wikipedia. With over 60 editors contributing to HerStory, the edit-a-thon shattered expectations.[http://www.theshorthorn.com/news/herstory-edit-a-thon-aims-to-diversity-content-on-wikipedia/article_b5874b80-32cb-11e8-aee1-2f35916d19a6.html] With 3 articles created, 74 edited, 63 editors added 12.7K words resulting in 3.15M article views to date. As Wikipedia offers libraries a way to serve 21st-century information needs, UT Arlington Libraries is continuing to build off of the success of HerStory, harnessing Wikipedia to improve access to knowledge, teach digital literacy, and to empower our students.

Wikipedia has a problem and it is unconscious. Implicit bias is unconscious bias that affects our actions, behaviors, and understanding without us even being aware of it. Implicit bias is learned through socialization beginning in childhood. It is reinforced through social interactions with like-minded individuals and through messages in social media, literature, and other cultural and environmental methods. Without challenging our biases and reflecting on how they impact our behavior, our biases can become problematic. They already have become problematic for Wikipedia.
Come learn about preliminary findings from this [https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/JackieKoerner/Investigating_the_Impact_of_Implicit_Bias_on_Wikipedia in-depth investigation of implicit bias’ impact on English Wikipedia]. The data from this proposed project will help the community to better understand the problem implicit bias poses for Wikipedia and what can be done about it.
;Abstract: This case study traces the shift in an extra credit assignment in a graduate research course from using Twitter to expand one's network and access subject-matter expertise to contributing reliable and credible content as an active editor of Wikipedia. The six week intensive course in a management and systems degree program focuses on articulating problems in practice, providing evidence for developing researchable questions, and conducting a literature review. The course is demanding, and the Wikipedia extra credit is offered to help students augment their grades through contributing to Wikipedia. The assistance of the Wiki Education Foundation was invaluable in developing this assignment, as many of their offerings are based on a traditional full semester course with the editing spread throughout the curriculum requirements, and not as an extra-credit-only course learning opportunity. This study utilizes an explanatory case study methodology informed by narrative and teacher self-study.
;Abstract: The dreams of democracy that accompanied the emergence of the internet seem, in retrospect, naive and idealistic. It has been said that today it is easier to imagine the end of the world via ecological calamity or nuclear destruction than it is to imagine a new form of social organization. The same could be said about health inequities. The idea that poverty could be eradicated is shrugged off as unrealistic. A deep cynicism pervades public health culture that increasingly focuses on risk reduction rather than a positive vision of the future of humanity. Just over 100 years ago, the first school of public health was opened in Baltimore, Maryland. At that time, areas of professional expertise included engineering to ensure city design would be healthier with clean water and waste disposal. Today, no public health training tracks focus on the digital infrastructure needed to cultivate advances in health at the population level. Wikipedia, as one of the few platforms designed for the public good, remains the best example of a digital platform designed to provide synthetic understanding of many public health topics. However, it also represents the limited imagination and resources that have been dedicated to designing our digital infrastructure in order to make the collective knowledge of human history as useable as possible to improve health globally. This session will begin with an overview of my experience teaching undergraduate and graduate students using Wikipedia as a way to rethink the platforms that exist (both political and technical) to advance the science and practice of public health. It will further propose a model for partnerships between a number of disciplines: computer science, graphic design, media studies, cultural theory, history, fiction, and epidemiology that could cultivate digital platforms to build a global public health movement.
;Abstract:

In this session, I will present basic concepts on planning and organizing Wikipedia events. While many of the other submissions focus on event planning and outreach, these are typically for an advanced audience, so this is an attempt to fill the gap of beginner-oriented outreach topics. All are invited to attend, whether actively planning anything or just curious. I will cover:
* What sorts of events are common—everything from purely social meetups to special-access events with academic/cultural partners
* What is the value of holding events
* Logistics of event planning, including:
** Finding a host/partner
** Venue considerations
** Attracting attendees (especially in locales without active chapters)
** Securing funding
* Example agendas (models to follow)
* Programming (presentations, tutorials, etc.)
* Measuring success
* Where to go for assistance, including online resources and contacts

The main goal is for every interested attendee to leave feeling inspired and confident enough to organize their own event, large or small. With over a decade of experience attending, organizing, and running Wikipedia events, I will draw on many personal experiences and insights in presenting this material. However, above all else, I aim to provide more of a practical how-to for the interested than a case study or proposal.
;Abstract:

What brings new editors to Wikipedia? For most of our history, the reasons have been diverse, but for one pool of new editors, the reason is simple: they’re here because their professor told them to be. Over the past four years, Wiki Education has brought 43,000 student editors to Wikipedia, and I’ve supported about half of that number.

Student editors have the potential to make large contributions to Wikipedia that are successfully integrated into the encyclopaedia, or term papers that sit untouched, because no one can figure out how to turn them into encyclopaedia articles. Some student contributions can achieve Good Article status with little modification, while others need to be extensively reworked just to remain in the article.

In this talk I will discuss my observations about the challenges that new student editors face, and some of the successes they have achieved. I will discuss the barriers they face, and interventions that can help students who have encountered problems get back on track. Sometimes just switching the first and second paragraphs of the lead can change an “essay like” draft into the beginnings of a viable encyclopaedia article. At other times, it takes more effort. Paying attention to what works and what doesn’t allows us to adapt our feedback and training materials to meet these needs.

When I started in this role, I had a decade of Wikipedia experience and a decade of experience as an instructor in higher education; I thought I knew what students needed to know to write Wikipedia articles. I’ve learned a lot about how students think about Wikipedia, and how they interpret their interactions with other Wikipedians. While some of my observations are specific to students, much of this applies to all new editors, and I will discuss ways in which these could be applied to efforts to help other groups of new Wikipedians contribution to the project.

Structured discussions, organised community spaces, curated lists of pages, better user grouping and tracking of discussions and changes. These may sound scary to community members because they are phrases that can easily present with considerable historical baggage, and yet they are the past and future of Wikipedia's user interactions.

This should not be scary. We already have the patterns we need to develop truly effective social tools, from structured discussions to community hubs, laid out in the ways many projects already interact in wikitext: on talk pages, as WikiProjects. Let's explore the example of CollaborationKit, an extension created to facilitate WikiProjects in continuing to do exactly what they've always been doing, but with less overhead, and see how this project may yet be guided to be as effective as possible.
;Abstract: The Wikipedia + Libraries: Better Together program was an online training program for over 250 librarians and library workers in US public libraries. The program, which was run by OCLC's WebJunction team, sought to "meet librarians where they are" and helped them gain familiarity with Wikipedia and to develop their own engagement plans for incorporating Wikipedia in their work.

;Length of presentation: 20 minutes

;Special requests: none

;Preferred room size: largish -- I think this is a topic that is of broad interest.
;Abstract: An introduction to the basics of GLAM and other programmatic partnerships and their life cycles, and an introduction to some basic strategies for evaluating the likelihood of a GLAM partnership being successful. Come learn the common questions you should ask yourself before going into a conversation about a potential partnership.

The goal of the workshop will be to help folks understand the broad range of opportunities in the GLAM Wiki space, and then help them think through the basic approach to establishing and developing partnership activities with different institutions.

The workshop is based on a similar workshop that I have run at Learning Days at Wikimania: [https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1rpTg9wnuoHJ3iC7GJ4RhJztJES6tt54TdYai4Itmk6I/edit see the slide deck]-- but will include different community collaborators.
;Abstract:
One of the most common questions I get from students during the pre-writing, research, and revision phases for writing projects is whether Wikipedia "counts" as a valid online source-and many students have made compelling arguments for why teachers should stop banning Wikipedia in the classroom. Rather than leaping to a blanket "no" when a student asks, or offering the pat and unsatisfactory reply that Wikipedia is a starting point for further research, I argue that bringing Wikipedia editing into the composition classroom can be a beneficial strategy for writers in first-year composition courses at the college or university level.

Learning how to edit, write for, and add citations to Wikipedia articles can help students develop critical and lateral thinking skills as they figure out how to assess claims for bias, determine where additional research might needed, and fact-check sources before using them in a paper or adding them to an article. Further, such work assists students in developing research strategies that will help them with their current and future writing projects both inside and outside an academic setting.

Working on Wikipedia editing as well as scholarly writing gives students the opportunity to write for multiple audiences and receive feedback from their peers in the classroom and online-not just from a single instructor. Students also have the ability to make substantial contributions to Wikipedia and see the immediate impact of their work by comparing edit histories and looking at page view statistics. Wikipedia editing reinforces composition studies research findings that show writing is a collaborative process: students will need to work with their instructor, their fellow students, and other Wikipedians to make successful changes to any given article, and learn how to relinquish control over the product, as Wikipedia articles are never static or owned by a single contributor.

Drawing on my ongoing experiences as a Wikipedia Fellow and connecting Wikipedia's training resources to teaching needs, I will propose ways for composition instructors (and anyone teaching research-based writing) to more productively engage with Wikipedia in a classroom setting.
;Abstract: Some academic institutions have embraced Wikipedia, but there are still varied opinions on the value of Wikipedia in academia in general. There is a healthy degree of skepticism about the accuracy of information in Wikipedia, and faculty tend to steer their students away from using it. The way that information is produced on Wikipedia – anyone can add and change information – differs from the traditional peer-review model that academics are used to. These are some of the realities that form a barrier between Wikipedia and the academic sphere. However, framing Wikipedia as a learning opportunity for students and demonstrating the capacity for it to build skills in information and digital literacy, public writing, and research can be eye-opening for faculty. Explaining to instructors how they can contribute as subject matter experts can also be a way to get them more engaged with Wikipedia and lead them to understand how Wikipedia and academic institutions have shared goals.

:In her career as a librarian and instructional designer, Jennifer Sutcliffe, Educational Analyst at Emory University, has heard and considered many different perspectives on Wikipedia in higher education. Along with like-minded colleagues at Emory, she has made efforts to involve the Emory community in editing and teaching with Wikipedia. Through training, outreach, and education, this group encourages faculty to look at Wikipedia as an opportunity to further their pedagogy and scholarly work and bring it to a broader audience. In this brief talk, she will describe how she has learned to get faculty and others in the academic sphere to respond positively to Wikipedia by framing it as a living environment for teaching and learning. She will discuss some of the recent grant-funded efforts by the Emory Libraries Wikipedia Group – such as organizing edit-a-thons, hosting a full-day Wikipedia workshop, and hiring a part-time Wikipedian in Residence – to increase engagement with Wikipedia on campus and encourage faculty to contribute their expert knowledge, boost the signal of their research areas and educate the general population.
;Abstract: Wikimedia District of Columbia has facilitated four bootcamps (2012, 2014, 2016, 2018) for Wikimedia volunteers from all over the United States at the US National Archives and University of Maryland. Costs of attendance and travel were paid by WMDC. The bootcamps offered training and networking opportunities involving a number of topics, including train the trainer, community leadership, event organization and planning, institutional outreach, grants, online tools, risk management, safe space policies, and integration between sister wiki projects. Previous attendees have gone on to key positions in the Wikimedia Foundation and Wikimedia Affiliates, and to serve as Wikipedians-in-Residence and Wikipedia Visiting Scholars. Two of the graduates, Emily Temple-Wood and Rosie Stephenson-Goodknight, have been honored as Wikipedians of the Year. This panel will feature graduates and facilitators from these bootcamps discussing how their participation helped their involvement in Wikimedia projects and how the bootcamps develop talent and resources across the country.
