Welcome to an overview of staying in and getting around Columbus, Ohio. This overview will be expanded and improved as the conference nears.

On Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday of our conference, we will be in and around '''Thompson Library''', located at the heart of the Ohio State University campus. On Friday, we will be doing our Culture Crawl activities (tours, museums, etc.) mostly in '''downtown Columbus'''.

== Transportation ==
Columbus is a car-centric city, with Uber and Lyft (ridesharing services) widely available. Columbus is also served by the COTA public bus service, which will be able to take you between most important places in the city (including Ohio State, downtown, and the airport).

=== Airport ===
'''John Glenn International Airport''': Columbus is served by the [https://flycolumbus.com/ John Glenn International Airport] (CMH), located 6 miles east of downtown Columbus. Southwest Airlines provides the most flights through Columbus, following by American Airlines, Delta Airlines, and United Airlines (in that order). Budget flights from Fort Lauderdale, Las Vegas, and Orlando are available via Spirit Airlines.

It is roughly 20 minutes from the airport to Thompson Library via car (we recommend a taxi, Uber, or Lyft to your destination - starting at between $20-$30). Busing is also available, though will take up to an hour to get to campus.

Carpooling is recommended; as the conference nears, we will provide mediums for participants to coordinate arrival times and carpooling.

'''Rickenbacker International Airport''': For those flying Allegiant Air, it is a roughly a 30-minute drive from the campus to the airport (Taxi, Uber, or Lyft strongly recommended, will cost around $40). Busing is also available (COTA Line 22 from airport to downtown), though it will take more than an hour to get to campus.

=== Bus ===
* If you are arriving via Greyhound, the Columbus Greyhound Station is located at 111 E. Town Street Columbus, Ohio 43215.

* Columbus' public transportation consists of the [https://www.cota.com/ COTA] bus service. Fare information can be found [https://www.cota.com/fares/ here]; passes may be purchased upon arrival at John Glenn International Airport, at the AirConnect bus stop located outside of Arrivals (credit card only). COTA day passes cost $4.50, while 7-day passes cost $25. Single one-way trip fares are $2, with rush hour fares costing $2.75. Discounts are available for seniors and children.
**[https://www.cota.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/COTA-zmap-jan-2018.pdf View the COTA system map here]

* Ohio State University has its own bus service called [https://ttm.osu.edu/cabs CABS], which is free to ride around campus.

=== Car ===
Columbus is served by both [https://www.lyft.com/ Lyft] and [https://www.uber.com/ Uber]. These rideshare services are easy to use via a smartphone, and we highly recommend participants share rides to share costs. Lyft and Uber rides can support 4 or more passengers at a time.

As the conference nears, we will provide mediums for participants to coordinate rideshare or carpooling. Also, Columbus is a car-oriented city, '''so if rideshare or carpooling isn't an option, car rental is strongly recommended'''.

=== Shuttle ===
Some hotels provide shuttles to and from the airport, as well as the Ohio State University. Stay tuned for a list.

== Lodging ==
=== Airbnb ===
Airbnb is an online marketplace where individuals can rent out their own apartments, houses, etc. There are many quality and affordable Airbnbs available in the area, starting for as low as around $50 per night. Many Airbnbs have multiple bedrooms, making it an extra-affordable lodging option for groups.

{{arrow button|color=red|link=https://www.airbnb.com/s/Columbus--OH|label=Search for Airbnbs|external=yes}}

=== Hostels ===
Unfortunately Columbus doesn't have a hostel scene. The [http://www.wayfaringbuckeye.com/ Wayfaring Buckeye Hostel] is the only hostel in the vicinity, with rates starting at $100/night.

{{arrow button|color=red|link=http://www.wayfaringbuckeye.com/|label=Visit Wayfaring Buckeye|external=yes}}

=== Hotels ===
'''We are working to produce a list of preferred hotels and/or discount partners.''' Stay tuned. In the near future, we will also be creating a Facebook and Telegram group for conference-goers to coordinate lodging and transportation.

Most lodging is located roughly 8-15 minutes away from central campus (conference location) via car, with much of it also accessible via COTA. Some hotels can provide shuttles between the hotel and the university. There are many hotels located north of campus as well as downtown, with some other options located throughout the rest of the area. These hotels start at around $60/night, and average at between $100-$200/night. We are currently working to acquire preferred and discount hotel partners. The most budget options include Red Roof Inns.

Ohio State has one hotel on-campus, the [https://www.theblackwell.com/ Blackwell Inn]. Due to other events happening on the same weekend, availability is highly limited. It is an approximately 10 minute walk to the Thompson Library, and can easily access the campus bus system ([https://ttm.osu.edu/cabs CABS]).
'''North of Campus'''

There are several options here, ranging from $60 - $200. The nearest bus stop is located right outside Staybridge Suites.
{{arrow button|color=red|link=https://www.google.com/maps/search/Hotel/@40.0224014,-83.0275709,1767m/data=!3m1!1e3|label=View on Google Maps|external=yes}}

'''South of Campus'''

These are another good option and are relatively close to campus.
{{arrow button|color=red|link=https://www.google.com/maps/search/Hotel/@39.9823881,-83.0232301,15.65z|label=View on Google Maps|external=yes}}

'''Downtown'''

These are a roughly ~15 drive to campus, or a ~20-30 minute bus drive, depending on how far you are from a bus stop. These hotels are nice if you want to be near the heart of the city with access to good, local food and drink. These hotels will also be close to our Culture Crawl on Friday, which takes place downtown.
{{2018}}

== Transportation ==
Columbus is a car-centric city, with Uber and Lyft (ridesharing services) widely available. Columbus is also served by the COTA public bus service, which will be able to take you between most important places in the city (including Ohio State, downtown, and the airport).

=== Airport ===

=== Bus ===

=== Car ===

=== Shuttle ===
Some hotels provide shuttles to and from the airport, as well as the Ohio State University. Stay tuned for a list.

== Lodging ==
=== Airbnb ===

{{arrow button|color=red|link=https://www.airbnb.com/s/Columbus--OH|label=Search for Airbnbs|external=yes}}

=== Hostels ===
Unfortunately Columbus doesn't have a large hostel scene. The [http://www.wayfaringbuckeye.com/ Wayfaring Buckeye Hostel] is the one nearby hostel, with rates starting at $100/night.

{{arrow button|color=red|link=http://www.wayfaringbuckeye.com/|label=Visit Wayfaring Buckeye|external=yes}}

=== Hotels ===

It is an approximately 10 minute walk to the Thompson Library, and can easily access the campus bus system ([https://ttm.osu.edu/cabs CABS]).
| style="padding: 0px 0px 0px 15px;" |
'''North of Campus'''

There are several options here, ranging from $60 - $200. The nearest bus stop is located right outside Staybridge Suites.
{{arrow button|color=red|link=https://www.google.com/maps/search/Hotel/@40.0224014,-83.0275709,1767m/data=!3m1!1e3|label=View on Google Maps|external=yes}}

'''South of Campus'''

These are another good option and are relatively close to campus.
{{arrow button|color=red|link=https://www.google.com/maps/search/Hotel/@39.9823881,-83.0232301,15.65z|label=View on Google Maps|external=yes}}

{{2018}}

== Transportation ==
Columbus is a car-centric city, with Uber and Lyft (ridesharing services) widely available. Columbus is also served by the COTA public bus service, which will be able to take you between most important places in the city (including Ohio State, downtown, and the airport).

=== Airport ===

=== Bus ===

=== Car ===

As the conference nears, we will provide mediums for participants to coordinate rideshare carpooling.

=== Shuttle ===
Some hotels provide shuttles to and from the airport, as well as the Ohio State University. Stay tuned for a list.

== Lodging ==
=== Airbnb ===

{{arrow button|color=red|link=https://www.airbnb.com/s/Columbus--OH|label=Search for Airbnbs|external=yes}}

=== Hostels ===
Unfortunately Columbus doesn't have a large hostel scene. The [http://www.wayfaringbuckeye.com/ Wayfaring Buckeye Hostel] is the one nearby hostel, with rates starting at $100/night.

{{arrow button|color=red|link=http://www.wayfaringbuckeye.com/|label=Visit Wayfaring Buckeye|external=yes}}

=== Hotels ===

It is an approximately 10 minute walk to the Thompson Library, and can easily access the campus bus system ([https://ttm.osu.edu/cabs CABS]).
| style="padding: 0px 0px 0px 15px;" |
'''North of Campus'''

There are several options here, ranging from $60 - $200. The nearest bus stop is located right outside Staybridge Suites.
{{arrow button|color=red|link=https://www.google.com/maps/search/Hotel/@40.0224014,-83.0275709,1767m/data=!3m1!1e3|label=View on Google Maps|external=yes}}

'''South of Campus'''

These are another good option and are relatively close to campus.
{{arrow button|color=red|link=https://www.google.com/maps/search/Hotel/@39.9823881,-83.0232301,15.65z|label=View on Google Maps|external=yes}}

== Transportation ==
Columbus is a car-centric city, with Uber and Lyft (ridesharing services) widely available. Columbus is also served by the COTA public bus service, which will be able to take you between most important places in the city (including Ohio State, downtown, and the airport).

=== Airport ===

=== Bus ===

Single one-way trip fares are $2, with rush hour fairs costing $2.75. Discounts are available for seniors and children.
**[https://www.cota.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/COTA-zmap-jan-2018.pdf View the COTA system map here]

* Ohio State University has its own bus service called [https://ttm.osu.edu/cabs CABS], which is free to ride around campus.

=== Car ===

As the conference nears, we will provide mediums for participants to coordinate rideshare carpooling.

=== Shuttle ===
Some hotels provide shuttles to and from the airport, as well as the Ohio State University. Stay tuned for a list.

== Lodging ==
=== Airbnb ===

{{arrow button|color=red|link=https://www.airbnb.com/s/Columbus--OH|label=Search for Airbnbs|external=yes}}

=== Hostels ===
Unfortunately Columbus doesn't have a large hostel scene. The [http://www.wayfaringbuckeye.com/ Wayfaring Buckeye Hostel] is the one nearby hostel, with rates starting at $100/night.

{{arrow button|color=red|link=http://www.wayfaringbuckeye.com/|label=Visit Wayfaring Buckeye|external=yes}}

=== Hotels ===

It is an approximately 10 minute walk to the Thompson Library, and can easily access the campus bus system ([https://ttm.osu.edu/cabs CABS]).
| style="padding: 0px 0px 0px 15px;" |
'''North of Campus'''

There are several options here, ranging from $60 - $200. The nearest bus stop is located right outside Staybridge Suites.
{{arrow button|color=red|link=https://www.google.com/maps/search/Hotel/@40.0224014,-83.0275709,1767m/data=!3m1!1e3|label=View on Google Maps|external=yes}}

'''South of Campus'''

These are another good option and are relatively close to campus.
{{arrow button|color=red|link=https://www.google.com/maps/search/Hotel/@39.9823881,-83.0232301,15.65z|label=View on Google Maps|external=yes}}

== Transportation ==
Columbus is a car-centric city, with Uber and Lyft (ridesharing services) widely available. Columbus is also served by the COTA public bus service, which will be able to take you between most important places in the city (including Ohio State, downtown, and the airport).

=== Airport ===

=== Bus ===

Single one-way trip fares are $2, with rush hour fairs costing $2.75. Discounts are available for seniors and children.
**[https://www.cota.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/COTA-zmap-jan-2018.pdf View the COTA system map here]

* Ohio State University has its own bus service called [https://ttm.osu.edu/cabs CABS], which is free to ride around campus.

=== Car ===

As the conference nears, we will provide mediums for participants to coordinate rideshare carpooling.

== Lodging ==
Most lodging is located roughly 8-15 minutes away from Thompson Library via car, with much of it also accessible via COTA.

We are still working to produce a list of preferred hotels and/or discount partners.

'''On campus''': Ohio State has one hotel on-campus, the [https://www.theblackwell.com/ Blackwell Inn]. As it is the only hotel located right on campus, it is pricier than other options you can find. It is an approximately 10 minute walk to the Thompson Library, and can easily access the campus bus system ([https://ttm.osu.edu/cabs CABS]).

'''Off campus''': There are many hotels located north of campus as well as downtown, with some other options located throughout the rest of the area. These hotels start at around $60/night, average at around $100/night, and can go up to $200/night depending on the quality of location.
* North of campus: There are several options here, ranging from $60 - $140. The nearest bus stop is located right outside Staybridge Suites. ''[https://www.google.com/maps/search/Hotel/@40.0224014,-83.0275709,1767m/data=!3m1!1e3 View on Google Maps]''
* South of campus: These are relatively close to campus. ''[https://www.google.com/maps/search/Hotel/@39.9823881,-83.0232301,15.65z View on Google Maps]''
* Downtown: These are a roughly ~15 drive to campus, or a ~20-30 minute bus drive, depending on how far you are from a bus stop. These hotels are nice if you want to be near the heart of the city, as well as near the locations of our Culture Crawl on Friday. ;Abstract:
The Wikipedia Good Article designation is designed to be a way to recognize an article which “meets a core set of editorial standards but is not featured article quality.” An article is assessed against 6 criteria to see if it is well written, verifiable, broad in its coverage, neutral, stable, and appropriately illustrated. The review process is sometimes called “lightweight” as a single reviewer is able to go through the evaluation process with the nominating editor.

How does this actually play out? In many ways incredibly well. The GA process is one of the few ways an editor can get detailed substantive feedback on the quality of their article work. Reviews typically take only a few days from start to finish. Pass or fail, the GA process frequently works to keep editors engaged and motivated in the core work of content creation while raising the overall quality of the encyclopedia. A review can be collaborative work at its finest.

However, there are also issues. The biggest issues with the Good Articles process is the long waiting list with about 400 articles waiting for reviews at the time this is being submitted.
This presentation will explore six months of data collected on nominations and reviews to shed light on where the process is working and where it can use more help and what factors do and don’t influence the average wait time for an article.

Probably the best way the backlog of nominees can be reduced is by having more reviewers and so this presentation will end with a brief overview of of the review instructions and pointing to resources where interested editors can learn more about the process. The Good Article community review process will also be explored as a possible entry point for editors who wish to do work with Good Articles.

;Length of presentation: roughly 20-25 minutes

;Special requests:

Timeless, a skin presenting a total overhaul of the MediaWiki interface, was deployed to Wikimedia production based on popular demand in November 2017. Over the course of 2017 and into 2018, three grant proposals have been submitted to the Wikimedia Foundation for funding further development and support of Timeless before the project finally received funding to resolve the many extant issues with the skin and turn it into something that can help shape the future of MediaWiki skinning. This session will discuss what happened with these proposals, as well as the current status and future of work on the Timeless project itself.
;Abstract:

Mobile support is a very major problem for Wikimedia and with MediaWiki in general. Mobile is currently the main way a majority of people access Wikipedia and the sister projects, and for readers and users in some regions, may even be the only way they can.

And yet most skins simply don't support mobile at all, only providing a usable desktop experience. Minerva/MobileFrontend resolves the problem to some extent for readers, but presents major issues and limitations for editors and desktop use cases, as it does this primarily by removing features entirely. Timeless as another skin attempts to resolve mobile issues for editors with a more full-featured scaled interface, but also doesn't actually work in practice largely due to a lack of MediaWiki core support and even the content itself - most content and common features of the software itself simply are not responsive to begin with. And yet the fact of the matter is we need to be able to effectively support users across all devices with a single, cohesive interface, scaling responsively to properly fit each.

To do this will require both an understanding of where we have come from as communities and with our products, and also considerable work from developers and editors alike. While work has been ongoing toward this end for years now, let's discuss how we can all help to move this forward more effectively.

Structured discussions, organised community spaces, curated lists of pages, better user grouping and tracking of discussions and changes. These may sound scary to community members because they are phrases that can easily present with considerable historical baggage, and yet they are the past and future of Wikipedia's user interactions.

This should not be scary. We already have the patterns we need to develop truly effective social tools, from structured discussions to community hubs, laid out in the ways many projects already interact in wikitext: on talk pages, as WikiProjects. Let's explore the example of CollaborationKit, an extension created to facilitate WikiProjects in continuing to do exactly what they've always been doing, but with less overhead, and see how this project may yet be guided to be as effective as possible.
;Abstract:
Over the past year or so, I've been working on several tools to improve the Wikipedia editing experience. I've concentrated on both the new user experience and tools for power users. I will demonstrate the tools to improve awareness of them and to reach a different audience than I normally do with my onwiki announcements. The tools have the potential to greatly improve the experience for both groups of target users.

These tools include: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Enterprisey/reply-link reply-link], a script to add inline reply forms to discussion pages, which dramatically simplifies the process of replying to a comment in a discussion; a tool to automatically install user scripts without having to edit JavaScript pages, to lower the barrier of installing scripts and improve the new user & editathon experience; an advanced, customizable dashboard for Wikipedia discussions; a tool to display a user's history of contributions to the English Wikipedia AIV page; and a tool with various additional filters for the user contributions page, such as bytes added/removed, whether or not the edit is current, and whether to combine results from various namespaces.

I will demonstrate how the tools might be used by a new user at an editathon. I might also go through a couple of the less widely-known tools written by me, such as the [https://tools.wmflabs.org/xfd-stats/ XfD Statistics tool], a useful statistics tool, or the new & improved [https://tools.wmflabs.org/apersonbot/cat-track/ CatTrack tool], allowing editors to see how category (and backlog) sizes have evolved over time. If time allows, I'll talk about further topics related to user scripts, both mine and others, such as a high-level overview of the process of making new ones; useful/underused techniques I've discovered while writing mine (including what I've learned while writing reply-link, a rather complex script); and the process of maintaining much older scripts, such as Navigation Popups and the Articles for Creation helper script, both of which are widely used on the English Wikipedia.
