Proposed panelists:
* Andrew Lih, American University, Wiki Makes Video
* Brion Vibber, Wikimedia Foundation
* Mike Nolan, Mozilla
* Jake Johnson, Internet Archive

SUMMARY: In this session we describe how after a long period of stagnation, video has made huge strides in the Wikimedia movement the past year. A visual content community has emerged with English Wikipedia growing to more than 7,000 articles with video through efforts such as Wiki Makes Video. In 2015, there have been big breakthroughs with the launch of ogvjs, a Javascript-based media player that allows for immediate Ogg Theora video playback in any modern browser (made live on Wikimedia Commons in August 2015). It also marked the creation of a "video editing server" prototype through efforts of the German chapter to allow uploads of video of a variety of codecs and containers for conversion to open formats. We describe the technical and cultural obstacles in incorporating more video in the Wikimedia movement and discuss plans for the future that include working with the Mozilla Foundation and the Internet Archive for achieving the holy grail of wiki video creation – a fully distributed collaborative video editing ecosystem where anyone with a web browser can participate in timeline-based editing of video.

DETAILS:

* Overview
** State of open video standards - Overview of Ogg Theora and WebM
** Community RFC on using MPEG-4 - January 2014 RFC on video standards adoption and using patent encumbered formats
** Implications of open source requirements for users, creators and uploaders - formats, editing tools, browsers, codecs
* Developments
** Rationale, design and implementation of the German Schnittserver (editing server) project
** Developing and launching ogvjs by Brion Vibber, a JavaScript media player using Ogg/Vorbis/Theora/Opus/WebM libs compiled with Emscripten source-to-source compiler
** Overview of video content statistics and applications in English Wikipedia
** Designing a fully distributed collaborative video editing ecosystem for the future
*** Partner: Mozilla Webmaker Popcorn - a browser-based multimedia assembly interface
*** Partner: Internet Archive for uploading, transcoding and storage
*** How to create a wiki-like workflow for distributed collaborative video production
**** What do video equivalents of edit history, diffs, recent changes, et al. look like?
**** How are functions like logging, storyboarding or script writing supported in such a system?
**** What additional tools might video makers need to collaborate?
* Workshop (time permitting, or in the Unconference)
** One goal is to get feedback from the audience on how to create a "concept video" that best illustrates how a final system might function (to be shown to potential funders)
** What topic would be ideal to make a "footage call" so that anyone in the world could shoot video and contribute to a larger montage video?
** What like-minded institutions or existing video communities should we be working with?

This session is for new or intermediate-skilled Wikimedians who would like to learn to do more or better work in Wikisource or on Wikimedia Commons. Wikisource holds historic documents and assists people in transcribing them so they are searchable, and holds the history forever. There are many language versions of Wikisource. Wikimedia Commons holds images and other binary files for use by Wikipedia and other related sites, including Wikisource.

Jim Hayes is an experienced editor of Wikisource who has worked extensively on transcribing the 1911 Encyclopedia Britannica and many other wikisource document projects.
Hayes will present some things he has done in Wikisource and how new users can do them. It is a satisfying and safe way for new users to contribute. Jim will discuss the future of Wikisource and some new technologies that will hopefully come into play.
Peter Meyer will assist.

We expect to have some materials from the National Archives to scan, upload, and classify for Wikimedia Commons and Wikisource.

Both can work with new users or help address special issues one on one with attendees.

;Length of presentation:
75 mins (or less, if that fits better)

;Special schedule requests:
It will be convenient if we can use the scanner room. Can do this during a long lunch or evening time.
;Abstract: The United States Department of Agriculture maintains a digitized collection of over 7,500 beautiful watercolors of fruits painted around the turn of the 20th century. These are public domain works that could provide valuable historical and scientific information—not to mention excellent illustrations for Wikipedia—but were largely unavailable to the public. When I found these images in February of 2015, I knew that I wanted to share them with as many people as possible.

:And in the months since discovering the Pomological Watercolor collection, I've come to truly love the paintings themselves. But it's also important to recognize that they stand for something much broader. We talk often about the value of the public domain to Wikipedia, and to our culture at large, but not as much about works and collections that are free from copyright restrictions but behind logistical or bureaucratic walls. The Pomological Watercolor collection is a great example of works that belong to all of us, but which, until quite recently, were not available for all of us to enjoy.

:Through a combination of public advocacy, a handful of Freedom of Information Act requests, and the support of a community built around uploading archives of media, I've been able to start to free the Pomological Watercolor collection to Wikimedia Commons. I wrote my first pywikibot program, and am in the final stages of my first Commons bot request process. It's been both a challenge and a joy to dig into this collection and get it out to the world, and I want to empower more people to similarly take the public domain into their own hands.
;Abstract: Over the weekend of International Women’s Day, March 6-8, 2015, approximately 1500 participants convened in 75 locations in 17 countries, on 4 continents, to edit Wikipedia articles on women and the arts. During, this day, nearly 400 new articles were created and over 500 articles received significant improvements. 1500 people attended globally, putting this event in line with attendance at Wikimania. The event was covered by The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and ARTnews, among many others. This was a productive and substantial growth from the inaugural 2014 event, which had around 600 participants in 31 locations and created 101 new articles, and improved 90. For our efforts, the organizers of the 2014 edit-a-thon were named to Foreign Policy magazine’s list of Leading Global Thinkers.

:We are proposing a presentation and/or workshop that will talk about parts of our process that we feel were most crucial in enabling this outcome. We are flexible about scope and duration: we can give a shorter talk, or a longer workshop. Jacqueline Mabey, and Michael Mandiberg will be presenting, as well as any organizers of Art+Feminism nodes who are in attendance at the conference. This presentation/workshop is meant to be useful both for potential A+F node organizers, as well as Wikimedia organizers more broadly; we feel our techniques and strategies are broadly applicable.

;Length of presentation: 30-45 min. for presentation/panel (pending number of A+F node organizers), 60 min. for workshop (flexible on timing and format)
;Abstract:
This presentation will facilitate a discussion about an intensive, multi-semester project focused on using Wikipedia to better provide open access scholarly information on the work of Octavia E. Butler and her work. This project has served as a means for allowing students to engage with existing scholarship on Butler as well as gain relevant practice in writing collaboratively, both with each other in small groups and with the larger online communities of Wikipedia editors and science fiction fandom. The presentation will also review the impact that working on distinct types of research writing (collaborative, online encyclopedic entries versus individual thesis-based research papers) had on students’ understanding of Butler’s life and works as well as their engagement with the course material. At 2014’s WikiConference in NYC, we invited students from the early part of the project to present on their Wikipedia participation and one of their comments was: “‘This was the best experience of my life.” We will invite students to join us for this presentation as well.

Our methodology will be illustrated with examples from two English research paper classes which formed part of the Wikipedia Education program during the Spring 2014 and 2015 semesters alongside classes conducted at the CUNY Graduate Center, Barnard College, Harvard, Georgetown University, and NYU. Working in teams with Wikipedia editors, our students redrafted the Wikipedia article on Butler’s bestselling novels Fledgling and Kindred as well as the information on Octavia Butler’s biography.

Our presentation will not be solely limited to details of this project, and will touch upon issues of interest to educators interested in developing strategies to improve faculty outreach: how to conduct collaborative workshops and editathons with other departments and programs, and how to integrate librarians involved in information/digital literacy in the instructional process.
