Program Support & Evaluation Resources
Understanding the what and why of Program Evaluation
Session Abstract: Each year, volunteers and program leaders of the Wikimedia movement plan and execute a great diversity of program activities. But how do we know that our program activities are likely to achieve the results we hope to see?

Specific learning objectives:
* Participants learn what a program and program evaluation are and why we do different types of evaluation
* Participants learn where to find learning resources and tools for program planning and evaluation

Making your Goals SMART
;Session Abstract: SMART is a framework for creating targets (or "measures of success" as it's known in PEG, or "objectives" as it's known in APG) for programmatic work; it's a framework that the Wikimedia Foundation grant teams use to help grantees turn generic objectives / measures of success into focused statements, that specify the action and expected outcomes. This session will focus on clarifying terminology (such as What is an "output" vs. "outcome") and reviewing the SMART framework used by the Wikimedia Foundation grant teams.

Specific learning objective:
* Participants understand SMART terminology and how to create SMART targets

Clarifying your Theory of Change with Logic Models
;Session Abstract: Logic Models are a very valuable tool for the planning of our program activities and for developing appropriate evaluation strategies. Based on the distinction between the ‘outputs’ and the ‘outcomes’ of our work, they can be used to carefully think through the links between what we are doing and what we want to change by this. In this rotation session we will shortly recap the concepts of outputs, outcomes and impact, practice to set up a simple logic model and discuss how this tool can be used and trained at the participant's’ home affiliations.

Specific learning objectives:
* Participants learn of basic logic model terms like outputs, outcomes, impact.
* Participants get first ideas how to train and use logic models in their planning and evaluation work

Capturing Social Change Through Outcome Mapping
;Session Abstract: In the Wikimedia world of programs, outcome mapping strategies can help us to gather data on the contributions that our programs make in terms of bringing about social change. From the changes in our partners to the changes in our readers and contributors around the world that help to build toward greater engagement in open and free knowledge. Outcome mapping can help to get beyond the more direct program outcomes to deeper environmental outcomes to measure a program’s contribution to complex change processes.

Specific learning objectives:
* Participants will learn what outcome mapping is along with it's benefits and limitations.
* Participants will learn of next steps for learning more about outcome mapping in their evaluation work.

Grants Programs
;Session Abstract: Each year the foundation's community resources team works to offer more than two hundred grants to individuals, groups, and organizations working toward the Wikimedia Mission. To do so, we rely on committees of Wikimedia volunteers who have helped to award over 9 million US dollars in grants. We invite you to learn more about our different types of grants for individuals as well as groups and organizations doing Wikimedia research, projects, or programs.

Specific learning objectives:
* Participants will learn about the new grant programs for individuals (Travel and Participation Support, Rapid Project Grants, and Quarterly Project Grants)
* Participants will learn about the new grants programs for groups and organizations (Rapid Project Grants, Quarterly Project Grants, Conference & Event Grants, Simple Annual Plan Grants, and FDC Annual Plan Grants)

Online Metric and Collaborative Project Management Tools
Global Metrics Magic Button
;Session Abstract: Participants will learn how to use the new Global Metrics magic button, that collects four global metrics using one report with four inputs.

Specific learning objective:
* Participants learn how to use the "magic button"

Category Tools: What to use?
;Session Abstract: Will provide a quick rundown of the existing category assessment tools, and help solve project specific requests about how to use these tools:
:* BaGLAMa 2
:* GLAMorgan
:* PetScan (successor to CatScan)
:* Massviews

Specific learning objective:
* Identify when and how to use different tools available for assessing content on the projects

Quarry: A tool that gets you further
;Session Abstract: Participants will learn what you can learn with Quarry.

Specific learning objectives:
* Participants will understand the variety of information available

Education Toolkit: A Collection of Resources
;Session Abstract:

Specific learning objective:
*

IdeaLab: A Space for Collaborative Project Development
;Session Abstract: Starting a new project or proposal from scratch is no easy task. IdeaLab is space on Meta to draft your idea and get feedback on it before moving it to the next step of implementation. In this session, you’ll learn about how to use IdeaLab and be provided an overview of grants offered by the Wikimedia Foundation.

Specific learning objectives:
* Understand how to start an idea and leave feedback in IdeaLab.
* Learn about what funding opportunities the Wikimedia Foundation offers through its grant programs and their relation to IdeaLab.
* Learn different avenues by which you can move your ideas into implementation, whether they require funding or not.

Phabricator: A Space for Collaborative Project Management (Tentative)
; Session Abstract: How can people let developers know about the tech issues they're having and the features they'd like to suggest? How can you set priorities for complex projects for your team? Through Phabricator is the answer. Putting things in front of the people who can actually do something about them is easier than you think.

;Specific learning objectives:
* Participants understand what Phabricator is and how to file a basic task or to find one.
;Abstract:

Wikidata is a relatively young but very successful Wiki project with the goal to provide a free structured knowledge base, freely editable by everyone.

In order to make the knowledge in this database available and useful to people, we need to develop tools which would allow us to make use of the data in meaningful ways - query it, ask questions against it, present it in various forms and aspects.

In the last couple of years a lot of work has been done to make this possible - to enable the users of Wikidata to ask and answer questions that interest them.

This presentation will provide an introduction into Wikidata and querying, presenting and visualizing the data assembled in Wikidata.
We will demonstrate the capabilities of the Wikidata Query Service and surrounding tools, and sample the questions that can be answered with Wikidata tools.

We will see how Wikidata Query Service works and what tools are provided to the user in order to ask questions and present the answers in clear and visually appealing form. We will see examples of queries and visualizations created by community members and external tools relying on Wikidata and the query engine for their functionality.
;Abstract:

Wikidata has a growing influence on the Wikimedia community, shaping everything from Infoboxes, to multilingual campaigns, to citations and other parts of Wikimedia content. However, for those of us not familiar with Wikidata, or without a background in linked, structured open data, there a number of concepts and assumptions about Wikidata which might challenging or are not obvious, leading to questions like: "What is Wikidata? How does it work? How can I make an impact and start editing?"

This workshop will focus on helping Wikimedians who already have experience editing other Wikimedia projects, to figure out the basic skills needed to become engaged in the Wikidata. The Workshop will do a brief introduction to editing Wikidata, it community and practice, including answering the questions:
*What is Wikidata? What problems does it solve?
*How do you navigate a multilingual, editable data community?
*How does Wikidata structure itself? What do we mean by Q and P numbers?
*What ought to be in Wikidata?
*How do I edit Wikidata? When should I edit Wikidata?
*What are the simplest ways to get engaged?
*How, in theory, can I use Wikidata to contribute to Wikimedia projects?
*Where can I find more information and help for understanding Wikidata?

This workshop will cover more basic skills and not include:
* How to use the Wikidata Query Service and/or API -- there is another workshop, which will focus on retrieving and using the data created by volunteers in Wikidata: Submissions:2016/Wikidata_and_Query_Service_-_understanding_and_presenting_the_data.
* How to do mass uploads of data from other free and open sources
* How to use campaigns to improve Wikidata
* How to embed Wikidata in other Wikimedia projects

Wikidata allows Wikimedia projects to share, exchange and truly internationalize and create multilingual impact between Wikimedia projects -- lets make sure we all know how it works!

;Abstract:
According to WMF research staff writing in 2015, "The Teahouse offers personalized support to new editors, providing an opportunity to learn the ropes of Wikipedia in a safe, friendly, and engaging environment".

I am the most active Teahouse host, with 3983 edits to the project as of August 30, 2016. The Teahouse began on February 15, 2012. Initially, the Teahouse was directly supported by WMF staff and fellows, but became volunteer-run in October, 2012.

I will read and review all of the 300+ questions asked at the Teahouse in the month of August, 2016, and their responses. I will sort each question into one or more general categories. Such categories will include writing a first article, image usage, copyright issues, article naming, tables, reference formatting, identifying reliable sources, conflict of interest, denials at Articles for Creation, and so on. Statistics about these categories for that month will be provided and discussed. Examples of specific positive interactions with new editors will be provided, as well as negative interactions, along with discussion of what went right and wrong.

The most active recent Teahouse hosts will be identified, and basic demographic information about them will also be provided. New editors who sought help at the Teahouse and then went on to become productive long term editors will also be discussed.

I will summarize existing research about the Teahouse and its effectiveness in editor retention. Although much of this research was completed back in 2012 during the early days of the Teahouse, a current project regarding "long term new editor retention" is being conducted by Jonathan Morgan and Aaron Halfaker of the Wikimedia Foundation, which has preliminary findings indicating that "that Teahouse invitees were significantly more likely than control to have made 1 or more edits between 3-4 weeks after registration ... and to have made 5 or more edits between 2-6 months after registration".

I will conclude my presentation with my own recommendations about how to improve the functioning and effectiveness of the Teahouse, especially in the all-important area (in my opinion) of personalized responses, friendly personal touches, and avoiding writing responses that can be perceived as bureaucratic, formulaic and cold.

I will also present ideas about how to better publicize the Teahouse to new editors, and also to potential new Teahouse hosts among the corps of experienced and active editors.
;Abstract: Professional researchers know something many Wikipedians perhaps do not: a good reliable source may be managed like a goldmine - assayed, secured, and exploited for maximum profit. Not one, but many articles, could benefit from one nugget of verifiability.

Zotero (Wikipedia) has long been the premier free and open source reference management solution for academics and scholars in all disciplines, and it has enabled users on Windows, Macintosh, and Linux platforms; using Firefox, Chrome, and Safari browsers; and Word or LibreOffice word processors (not to mention Wikipedia), to semi-automatically harvest citation sources and metadata online and manage them offline. No more typing most metadata! It is so capable that portions of the code are used within Wikipedia to automatically add metadata from an ISBN or DOI alone [citation needed].

This hands-on-laptop workshop will introduce attendees to the full capabilities of both the online and offline components of Zotero (home page) itself.

The great benefit will be mastering your reliable sources so you can get back to what brought you to Wikipedia in the first place: an unquenchable desire to follow your curiosity where it leads. With your sources in your control, you can work offline with downloaded and fully indexed PDFs and archived Web pages, with both original text and metadata completely searchable and sortable, tweak the metadata as needed, organize your notes, and produce perfectly formatted Wikipedia citation templates with a single keystroke. Later, you may easily repurpose your sources for an academic paper and easily format your citations in any one of thousands of standard styles, including MLA, APA, Chicago, or most any one you can name - thousands of formats can be output and inserted into Word or LibreOffice as fast as you can write and cite. All the while, your research stays with you, easily backed up on a free online Zotero server, enabling group collaboration, if you so choose.
;Abstract: The genealogical and local history community is a large, active, computer literate group participating in a number of collaborative projects. Based on surveys and the academic literature (e.g. Duff and Johnson, Fulton, Yakel), this presentation will discuss patterns of information seeking and dissemination in this group and how they compare to those of Wikimedians. It will survey existing genealogical and local history projects that are wholly or partially collaborative, including Ancestry.com, Geni.com, Find a Grave, and USGenWeb and how those projects enable or inhibit collaborative information gathering and dissemination based on Wikimedia standards, with reference to research on how Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects have been successful while other similar projects have failed (esp. Hill). It will present a potential WMF genealogical and local history designed to encourage collaborative, open access information gathering and dissemination that is specialized for the needs of these groups and designed to effectively interact with other WMF projects, especially Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons and make the case that such a project will draw the genealogical and local history community into the Wikimedia community to the benefit of both.
;Abstract: In recent years, significant effort has been expended to create new tools that enable new editors to participate as part of our editing community. While these new tools are undoubtedly an important aspect of any effort to ensure the long-term sustainability of the Wikimedia projects, the Wikimedia community has largely neglected to educate editors in our more advanced tools once they arrive. Various intermediate or advanced functions remain largely unknown to many experienced editors, such as the syntax to edit templates, the MediaWiki namespace, and AutoWikiBrowser. By surveying administrators of the English Wikipedia, I intend to demonstrate that a non-trivial number of some of our most experienced editors do not feel capable of using some of these tools, even when confronted with situations that could benefit from their use. These survey results will be presented.

:Further, I will provide a brief tutorial on editing templates which is intended to raise the competency of experienced editors to the point where they can understand and potentially edit all but the most complicated templates. A discussion of template syntax, magic words, and parser functions will be included, but Lua modules will be excluded. This aspect of the presentation will run no more than 15 minutes. By surveying participants before and after the educational intervention, I seek to provide evidence that brief and relatively low-effort educational interventions can tap into the potential of our existing editing community. While education can never fully replace the development of new tools, it could provide another avenue to increase the editing power of our community without necessarily recruiting new editors.

:The full results of both the pre-presentation survey of administrators and the surveys surrounding the educational intervention would be published on the English Wikipedia no later than early January 2017.

;Length of presentation: 30 minutes, but see note under "Special schedule requests".

;Special schedule requests:
*Can't present Monday
*Need internet-connected computer, projector, and screen
*In an ideal world, a small workspace would be available for ~30 minutes after the presentation so that interested participants can ask any template-related questions. This room could be smaller (10 should be fine). This is not vital for the presentation, but it certainly would help.

;Preferred room size: 25 or 50

;Will you attend WikiConference North America if your submission is not accepted?: Yes, pending scholarship result
