|abstract=Wikifunctions is a new Wikimedia project we are working on with the goal of allowing a community to create and maintain a library of functions. The main goal of Wikifunctions is to support the creation of Abstract Wikipedia, a Wikipedia where the content is created and maintained only once, but can be read in any of the more than 300 languages Wikipedia supports, and can be edited in any of those languages. But Wikifunctions explicitly aims for a wider goal: to provide a library of functions for many different use cases.

Functions answer questions. And as such, functions are an integral part of knowledge for a modern world. Besides the functions necessary to support the goals of Abstract Wikipedia, i.e. functions which allow for natural language generation, we envision also to support functions for other domains. Maps and geographical data provide a rich environment for the application of functions. We will be able to use functions in order to ensure constraints on the geographical data in Wikidata or in projects such as OpenStreetMaps, or to use the data in novel ways and thus also to encourage the creation of more data. Wikidata has still large gaps regarding for example historical maps of former countries, distribution maps of species, or for describing the geographical extension of climates or ecosystems.

In this talk we will present Wikifunctions, the current state of the project, and the plans regarding Abstract Wikipedia. We will also present some possibilities regarding how geodata can be used and leveraged with Wikifunctions, in order to start a conversation with the community, collect ideas and to see how interesting certain use cases might be.

* Minh Nguyễn: I can finally stop (ab)using <nowiki>[[Special:ExpandTemplates]]</nowiki> and <nowiki>[[Module:Sandbox]]</nowiki> to use the ParserFunctions and Lua implementations of these functions. 😅
* Minh Nguyễn: Good point about map data in Commons. It’s part of one of the workflows for getting interactive maps onto Wikipedia articles: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Creating_shape_maps_from_OpenStreetMap_data
* Minh Nguyễn: Some of these checks sound like things Sophox would also be able to answer, but maybe not as elegantly: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/SPARQL_examples
** Jan Ainali: Yes, but it couldn't answer something like, which of the taxons that are named after a European botanist can you find in Uruguay, which is made possible through Wikidata.
** Minh Nguyễn: Sophox federates w/ Wikidata for that purpose. There are some examples on that page.
** Minh Nguyễn: But the syntax isn’t very elegant, so I’m happy about something more integrated.
** Jan Ainali: Ah, it can federate, nice!
** Daniel Mietchen: Sophox is great but has too much downtime
** Minh Nguyễn: Yeah, I look forward to trying out these geodata checks in Wikifunctions. Good to have multiple options.
* Daniel Case: How timely ... just a few days after the 155th anniversary of her birth 🙂
* Jess Beutler: Any questions for Denny?

=== Questions ===
* Daniel Mietchen: How can domain experts assist in building/ improving Wikifunctions for their domain?
** {{ping|Daniel Mietchen}} In general, wait until we have launched. It is very much possible that how to start will be difficult: do we need specific data types, what are the basic functions that need to be in place to offer value in that field, when can a domain expert start being productive? We will have discussion spaces on wiki and on chat. If someone is really curious, they can already join us on the Beta, but that may be more painful for many. --[[User:Denny|Denny]] ([[User talk:Denny|talk]]) 17:52, 15 November 2022 (UTC)
* Minh Nguyễn: The examples here show generating output, but what about input? My biggest frustration w/ OSM querying is that the querying languages are too complex. Could Wikifunctions assist in developing natural-language querying for geodata?
** {{ping|Mxn}} Eventually I hope that we will be going that way, yes. For now, our plan for inputs is to have a form based UX. This will be one of the things where we will need to spend more time and attention later. We are planning to have a Natural Language Generation system, so it sounds like we would be halfway there to a Natural Language Understanding (NLU) system - but I am not sure about that. For NLU, I think we will require a different approach and maybe a different system. There have been ideas around this just as Magnus Manske's [https://magnus-toolserver.toolforge.org/thetalkpage/ The Talk Page], but honestly, I think this requires quite some thought. So, I am respectful of the complexities a natural language querying would require, that's a long term goal. But I am optimistic that we can in the mid-term provide something that is approachable by the general user to call functions, even if it is not natural language based. I hope that makes sense. --[[User:Denny|Denny]] ([[User talk:Denny|talk]]) 17:57, 15 November 2022 (UTC)
* Jane Darnell: It would be nice to have a function to change "Last, First" to "First Last" and the other way around (if the Wikidata item has family name and given name)
** {{ping|Jane023}} Here we go, in the one way: [https://wikifunctions.beta.wmflabs.org/wiki/Z10286 function to switch "Last, First" to "First Last"]. I would be curious if you want to try out to do it the other way. If you want, ping me, and we can do it together, if you don't mind. I'd like to see how difficult it turns out. --[[User:Denny|Denny]] ([[User talk:Denny|talk]]) 18:10, 15 November 2022 (UTC)
* Jan Ainali: Could we imagine functions to be usable in a user script?
** {{ping|Ainali}} If I remember correctly, user scripts can make REST calls to APIs on the Web, and so, yes! [https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Abstract_Wikipedia/Updates/2022-11-09#Checking_lexical_forms Here's an example of an external Website calling Wikifunctions Beta, and displaying results]. I think a user function should be able to do the same! (If I am mistaken, and there are things that don't allow that, we'll find a way to make it happen. Let me know then! But I think it might just work out of the box) --[[User:Denny|Denny]] ([[User talk:Denny|talk]]) 18:13, 15 November 2022 (UTC)
|type=Presentation
|abstract=Wikifunctions is a new Wikimedia project we are working on with the goal of allowing a community to create and maintain a library of functions.

** Minh Nguyễn•Organiser: Sophox federates w/ Wikidata for that purpose. There are some examples on that page.
** Minh Nguyễn•Organiser: But the syntax isn’t very elegant, so I’m happy about something more integrated.

Day 1 of the WikiConference North America pre-conference includes a '''hackathon''', taking place in Thompson Library's Multipurpose Room (165). The goal of the hackathon is for developers (regardless of experience) to brainstorm, plan, and create new tools, extensions, and applications to help the Wikimedia world. This is a great opportunity to meet the Wikimedia tech community, learn about the technologies and projects that power Wikipedia and its sister projects, and to propose or join a project to hack on during the event.

All you'll need is your laptop, ideas, and the energy to contribute. This flexible space includes comfortable chairs with built-in desks and wheels to allow for moving them about and defining working groups.

Over the course of the day, training sessions and other activities will be happening in concurrence in Thompson 150 A/B. Hackers can attend these sessions to take a quick break, or learn something new!

As this event only lasts one workday, this unfortunately may not be enough for everyone to complete their projects - but that's okay! We hope this event provides an experience that inspires, motivates, and lets participants jumpstart a project that they can work on in the future.

{{clear}}
[[File:Thompson 165.jpeg|right]]

At '''4 PM''', everyone will gather back around at front of the room, and participants will have the opportunity to do a quick presentation on what they've been working on. This can be simply describing what's being built, showing off the start of the project, or something in between.
Wikipedia users value the quality and stability of good and featured articles, but bringing articles to this status can be daunting. To demonstrate how quality article improvement can occur, this presentation will outline how a group of Wikipedia users created and improved a set of articles that resulted in featured articles (FA), good articles (GA), plus Did you know? (DYK) and In the News (ITN) appearances. Throughout, there was a need to maintain the integrity of several biographies of living persons (BLPs) and update content constantly, sometimes live.

The quest of racehorse [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Pharoah American Pharoah] for the American Triple Crown 2015, then finishing the year by completing horse racing's first-ever "grand slam" by winning the Breeders' Cup Classic in the fall presented a unique opportunity to write quality Wikipedia content while an event was unfolding. At the beginning, some articles were newly-created, others had existed for several years but required massive cleanup. A collegial and cooperative team that included regulars from WikiProject Horse racing and editors from outside the project worked together to develop several quality articles. Along the way, a deft hand was needed to maintain Wikipedia's standards on biographies of living persons (BLP) and handle controversies, such as those in the biography of the horse's "flamboyant and controversial" owner, [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ahmed_Zayat Ahmed Zayat].

Attendees at this presentation will learn how quality articles on Wikipedia are developed, including FA-level verifiability, locating and citing reliable sources, formatting, citations, obtaining free-licensed images, and pulling together submissions for four different review processes (ITN, DYK, GA and FA).
;Abstract:
According to WMF research staff writing in 2015, "The Teahouse offers personalized support to new editors, providing an opportunity to learn the ropes of Wikipedia in a safe, friendly, and engaging environment".

I am the most active Teahouse host, with 3983 edits to the project as of August 30, 2016. The Teahouse began on February 15, 2012. Initially, the Teahouse was directly supported by WMF staff and fellows, but became volunteer-run in October, 2012.

I will read and review all of the 300+ questions asked at the Teahouse in the month of August, 2016, and their responses. I will sort each question into one or more general categories. Such categories will include writing a first article, image usage, copyright issues, article naming, tables, reference formatting, identifying reliable sources, conflict of interest, denials at Articles for Creation, and so on. Statistics about these categories for that month will be provided and discussed. Examples of specific positive interactions with new editors will be provided, as well as negative interactions, along with discussion of what went right and wrong.

The most active recent Teahouse hosts will be identified, and basic demographic information about them will also be provided. New editors who sought help at the Teahouse and then went on to become productive long term editors will also be discussed.

I will summarize existing research about the Teahouse and its effectiveness in editor retention. Although much of this research was completed back in 2012 during the early days of the Teahouse, a current project regarding "long term new editor retention" is being conducted by Jonathan Morgan and Aaron Halfaker of the Wikimedia Foundation, which has preliminary findings indicating that "that Teahouse invitees were significantly more likely than control to have made 1 or more edits between 3-4 weeks after registration ... and to have made 5 or more edits between 2-6 months after registration".

I will conclude my presentation with my own recommendations about how to improve the functioning and effectiveness of the Teahouse, especially in the all-important area (in my opinion) of personalized responses, friendly personal touches, and avoiding writing responses that can be perceived as bureaucratic, formulaic and cold.

I will also present ideas about how to better publicize the Teahouse to new editors, and also to potential new Teahouse hosts among the corps of experienced and active editors.

;Length of presentation: 30 min.

;Special schedule requests: none

;Preferred room size: 50, but I will happily defer to the judgment of the conference organizers
:Bots and tools are a vital resource for many on-wiki content creation and curation activities. These individuals are "scratching their own itch" in the best tradition of [[:w:Open_source|open source development]]. ;Abstract: The Lead Product Managers at the Wikimedia Foundation are responsible for setting the direction of technological change in their area. They create roadmaps and set goals for their departments and communicate them to the Wikimedia movement. They manage and work with engineers, analysts, designers, community liaisons, and other product managers to ensure that teams deliver working, well-designed products that meet the needs of its users. In this panel, the Lead Product Managers for Editing, Discovery, and Reading will host a discussion about product development, their roadmaps, and how they work with the Foundation and each other to deliver value to Wikimedians worldwide. Talk to us about your favourite area for improvement, your number one complaint, or your vision for the future.
;Abstract:
This presentation will present the state of the video uploading to Wikimedia Commons and use in the Wikimedia projects as of 2016. It will be divided in a number of parts:

Short introduction to what videos are accepted on Wikimedia Commons, with comments relevant from both a technical and a community standpoint. Some short tips on conversion will be brought up.
An overview of the available tools for the actual uploading will be presented, as well as where each individual tool have an advantage. The tools video2commons, videoconvert and the Upload wizard will be touched upon. Some restrictions that might affect some of these tools will also be mentioned as to give the uploader the best possible options.

The talk will also give suggestions on where video might be suitable for an article and what might not. The talk will as well dwell into how to record videos that specifically will be useful for articles on Wikipedia. Previous sessions from Wikimanias will be worked into the session. Tips on both hardware and software will be included. Everything from mobile phones to high end camcorders will be touched upon.

Mentions of best practices regarding subtitles (also known as “timed text” on Commons) will also be included. External tools that can be of help will mentioned. This section will include short points on what templates may be used.

Finally the presentation will leave some questions for the audience to bring back to their own community, to discuss on how they want to include video in their local project.
United State has an outstanding culture of learning other languages as itself is a very diversified society, as well as most college students are required to master a second language to graduate. How can Wikipedia community collaborate with these language learners, practicers and educators to improve other Wikipedia projects besides English Wikipedia?
This workshop will provide participants a chance to take part in shaping the content and format of SuSa’s training materials. We will be asking you to share your experiences and challenges in running edit-a-thons, moderating online disputes, and reducing harassment on the Wikimedia projects. We will lead breakout sessions and knowledge sharing exercises to explore what volunteer training should include, and how it could be implemented in our communities. Topics will include de-escalation techniques, relevant policies, dispute resolution, and more.

-------

The Wikimedia Foundation is dedicated to creating safe spaces for users – regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, sex, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, race, ethnicity, national origin, age, political affiliation, religion or community status – to meet, interact, learn and collaborate. This goal applies both online, on Wikimedia projects, and offline, during real-life editing events and meetups run by or sponsored by the Wikimedia Foundation.

Functionary and community governance groups – including stewards, admins, global admins, and Arbitration Committees – play a crucial administrative and editorial role on all our sites, especially in curtailing harassment of volunteers and arbitrating and resolving disputes. Similarly, event organizers and on-site volunteers play a key role in preventing and addressing harassment and friendly-space-policy violations at events.

To help these key user groups better coordinate their work to promote safe environments for community members, we are facilitating, during the 2016-17 year, the development and deployment of two modules based around the critical areas of addressing harassment online and at events. This session will help Wikimedia communities get involved in the crafting and decision-making around these modules.

Wikidata is increasingly being used in Wikipedia, in many interesting ways through use of the Lua integration provided by Wikidata's Wikibase software.

In this presentation, some examples will be highlighted from English Wikipedia, as well as other language Wikipedia projects and sister projects. Some examples include infoboxes that use Wikidata (Infobox telescope, WikiProject US Roads, ...). Other types of templates that make use of Wikidata include the Authority Control template, and the WikidataCheck template, which is used to compare template parameters against data on Wikidata, for possible discrepencies and errors. It is now also possible create charts, using the Graph extension and data from Wikidata. (e.g. population charts for a city or country)

In addition to using data from a page's connected Wikidata item, arbitrary access is being rolled out to all Wikipedias (and sister projects) to allow using any item on any page. (e.g. the item about France on the article about Paris) How can this be used and what are its limitations?

Some questions that I will try to answer and discuss:

* What possibilities are there in the future for better, easier use of Wikidata on Wikipedia?

* What is the status of being able to query Wikidata and to automate lists on Wikipedia?

* What the development team is working on to help improve monitoring of Wikidata changes and tools to help with improving quality of data in Wikidata?

* Other questions you have about Wikidata?
