Getting in
Foreign travel
- See more: Visas
Canadian citizens generally do not need a visa to visit the United States. Mexican citizens not holding another passport generally need to have obtained a Border Crossing Card or visa prior to now, due to wait times to obtain them. Citizens of other foreign countries who seeks to enter the United States generally must first obtain a U.S. visa. Certain international travelers may be able to travel to the U.S. for tourism for 90 days or less without a visa under the Visa Waiver Program.
You can use the U.S. Department of State Visa Wizard to find out what visa type is appropriate for you and/if you are eligible for the Visa Waiver Program.
Conference organizers may be able to give potential attendees a letter of invitation.
By plane
There are three major airports in the New York area: John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK), LaGuardia Airport (LGA), and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). You can expect to pay between $80 to $150 by Uber/Lyft from the airport to Manhattan depending on the airport you fly into. There are many public transportation options including bus and subway connections.
By train
Travel by rail to New York City is possible from locations all over the United States of America. In past years, some WCNA attendees have organized a WikiTrain from major train hubs to the conference site.
Amtrak service to New York City stops at New York's famous Penn Station. The station is north of Union Square, not far from the conference venue and hotels.
New York City is also home to Grand Central Station, one of the most iconic train stations in the world and worth a visit!
By bus
For regional destinations, it is very possible to get to New York City by bus. Manhattan is served mainly by Greyhound and Megabus. There are multiple stops in NYC that these buses make, please check the carrier to ensure you're getting off at a stop closest to your accommodations.
By car
New York City is not an easy city to drive to and get around in your car. There are high levels of traffic and parking is very expensive and difficult to find. New York City has an excellent public transportation system, as much as possible we encourage you to use mass transit to get around the city. If you have to drive, we recommend using apps like Spothero to help you find the best deal on spots in parking garages close to where you need to be.
