GLAM employees often upload images to Wikimedia Commons. After making sure the metadata and categories are accurate, sometimes it's not clear what the next step is. Tools that track image views can help uploaders understand which images are the most popular. I'll walk through how to use tools like [https://tools.wmflabs.org/glamtools/glamorgan.html GLAMorgan] and [https://tools.wmflabs.org/glamtools/glamorous/ GLAMorous] to track views of categories of images hosted on Commons. I'll show how to use the tools to see how and where images are used, and where it might be productive to share images with other-language Wikipedia pages. |

- Abstract
A recent research article (summarized here) noted that many images are only used on only one language version of Wikipedia. This shows that sharing images between language projects could be an easy way to improve other-language Wikipedias. I've successfully shared images from my library's special collections with Japanese Wikipedia. I added several images of Japanese war banners to their Japanese counterparts, where many were retained and received more image views.
GLAM employees often upload images to Wikimedia Commons. After making sure the metadata and categories are accurate, sometimes it's not clear what the next step is. Tools that track image views can help uploaders understand which images are the most popular. I'll walk through how to use tools like GLAMorgan and GLAMorous to track views of categories of images hosted on Commons. I'll show how to use the tools to see how and where images are used, and where it might be productive to share images with other-language Wikipedia pages.
