Wikipedia @ 20: looking back and looking forward - insights from Wikipedia's first two decades
For the opening session of WikiConference North America 2019, join us for a panel discussion from editors and contributors to Wikipedia @ 20, a forthcoming collection of essays developed on the PubPub platform, published by MIT Press, and shared openly under Creative Commons licensing. This collection combines the insights and wisdom of nearly two dozen activists, authors, contributors, educators, journalists, researchers, scholars, and technologists regarding their experiences with Wikipedia through its first decades.
Wikipedia will be 20 years old on January 15, 2021. As we approach this date, what lessons have we learned? What has Wikipedia achieved in the first twenty years, and what does this history tell us of expectations fulfilled or disappointed, opportunities seized or missed, myths confirmed or busted, lessons learned, or the probable future? If we had to start over again, what would we do differently?
Come listen to a distinguished panel of Wikipedians discuss this novel project and these questions. The collection's editors, Joseph Reagle and Jackie Koerner, will join contributors in a panel moderated by Andrew Lih.
