Abstract (at least 300 words to describe your proposal)

This presentation will introduce Wikimedia LGBT, a proposed Wikimedia user group that supports the development of LGBT-related content on Wikimedia projects. Wikimedia LGBT is one way to empower and engage the global LGBT community and their supporters to develop content under a free license or in the public domain. Learn about the group's mission and goals, its history and current status, and potential future activities (including possible intersections with the GLAM community and Wikipedia's Education Program, plus other interwiki projects).

Wiki Loves Pride is an international campaign to expand and improve LGBT-related content across several Wikimedia projects. The activities of Wiki Loves Pride are focused on June and October, traditionally the months when lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities around the world celebrate LGBT culture and history. Activities generally take the form of edit-a-thons or photography projects, though coverage of LGBT events for Wikinews is also encouraged. June 2014 will see the first Wiki Loves Pride campaign. This presentation will reveal the results of this outreach initiative (and the challenges encountered along the way), and reveal plans for future campaigns.

Other proposed activities for Wikimedia LGBT include outreach at non-Wikimedian LGBT events, regional or national meetups, image acquisition for the LGBT Free Media Collective (Wikimedia Commons), and safe space development. What will the future bring for this group? You can help decide! Come learn more and contribute to the discussion.

Length of presentation/talk (see Presentation Types for lengths of different presentation types)

The Submissions page mentions a 15-minute maximum for curated talks. I can try to do 15 minutes, though 30 minutes would be preferable.

Will you attend WikiConference USA if your submission is not accepted?

Attendance is scholarship dependent, but not presentation dependent.
