Abstract

This session is for new or intermediate-skilled Wikimedians who would like to learn to do more or better work in Wikisource or on Wikimedia Commons. Wikisource holds historic documents and assists people in transcribing them so they are searchable, and holds the history forever. There are many language versions of Wikisource. Wikimedia Commons holds images and other binary files for use by Wikipedia and other related sites, including Wikisource.

Jim Hayes is an experienced editor of Wikisource who has worked extensively on transcribing the 1911 Encyclopedia Britannica and many other wikisource document projects. Hayes will present some things he has done in Wikisource and how new users can do them. It is a satisfying and safe way for new users to contribute. Jim will discuss the future of Wikisource and some new technologies that will hopefully come into play. Peter Meyer will assist.

We expect to have some materials from the National Archives to scan, upload, and classify for Wikimedia Commons and Wikisource.

Both can work with new users or help address special issues one on one with attendees.

Length of presentation

75 mins (or less, if that fits better)

Special schedule requests

It will be convenient if we can use the scanner room. Can do this during a long lunch or evening time.

Will you attend WikiConference USA if your submission is not accepted?

Yes.

Schedule: This workshop is scheduled for Saturday at 3:30pm in the Washington Room.
