Abstract:

The Wikimedians of the Caribbean Usergroup is a Wikimedia user group for the peoples of the Caribbean and the Caribbean Diaspora, bringing together cultures and languages, and also the communities with their diasporas.

Last year at WikiConference North America, we met for the firs time, then became a working group and since then have become a Wikimedia User Group.

We aim to improve coverage of the Caribbean and its cultures and languages as well as participation and representation of the Caribbean and its diaspora on Wikimedia.

Our members come from thoughout the Caribbean and its diaspora. We have held events, and over the summer, we launched a needed survey on Wikipedia to track usership in the Caribbean.

We also conducted phone and video interviews with participants living on the islands concerning their relationship with Wikipedia, their usership and editorship. We are even looking forward to some users coming to Wiki Conference North America for the first time!

This panel is an opportunity for us to tell the Wikiconference North America community more about this exciting journey on which we have been.

The panel will include Sherry Antoine, who is helping to organize the group and its activities, Kearry Goppee, who has been working to coordinate group membership development, Kai Smith, who helped lead the survey effort, Ian Ranjohn who helps as part of Wik Edu and Richard Knipel who has been an instrumental part of our efforts as a group.

We will allow time for questions from the audience and talk about our activities as well as results of our research.
