Wikidata-fying Northeastern University's "Women Writers in Review" initiative

Abstract:

"Women Writers in Review" is an initiative of the Digital Scholarship Group at Northeastern University where I serve as Visiting Scholar. The initiative encompasses pre-20th-century English language women writers, their works, reviews of their works, and ratings of the reviews assigned by academics. It supports research into the transatlantic reception and readership of early texts by women. Reception history rubrics exist, and using structured data to understand "cultures of reception" enables analysis, identification, and depiction of gender bias. With the assistance of others, I've developed a Wikidata model to depict this research. The session will includes approaches to this work, and how this model creates an opportunity for other academic institutions to contribute their unique data sets.

Presentation1 of this topic occurred at LD4 conference (Boston, May 2019); it was an introduction to an idea. Presentation2 occurred at Wikimania (Stockholm, August 2019); it articulated preparation for the "data dump" and property proposal process. Presentation3 will occur at Wikidatacon (Berlin, October 2019); this will be subsequent to the "data dump". WCNA will be Presentation4; it will include additional learnings subsequent to Wikidatacon and, hopefully, an announcement of other academic insitutions who will add their "cultures of reception" data.
