Title:

250 by 2026: Wiki Education’s GLAM Outreach

Type of session:

Lecture (15-30 min)

Session theme(s):

Missing pieces, Future of Wikipedia

Abstract:

Wiki Education’s Scholars & Scientists program is running a special set of courses centered on the upcoming US semiquincentennial. One goal is to engage 250 cultural heritage practitioners to add content from their collections to Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons to fill current gaps. Our efforts intend to engage smaller GLAM institutions across the United States where Wikimedia activity may be low and emphasizing geographic diversity in our outreach. Institutions strengthen public access to trusted information from their GLAM in a moment when funding and transparency in the sector is unstable. As a part of our existing Scholars & Scientists training program, we hope to add Wikimedia into the workflows of GLAM practitioners to improve access to and understanding of public history ahead of the national promotion of the 250th in Summer 2026.
