Title:

Commons galleries

Type of session:

Lecture (15-30 min)

Session theme(s):

Missing pieces

Abstract:

While not exactly a missing piece (they exist), Commons Galleries are among the most underutilized modes of presenting information in the Wikimedia ecosystem. There are a variety of good uses for them, ranging from identification help both for our own contributors and end users (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Romanian_Orthodox_churches_in_Bucharest) to providing a visual overview as one of the ways to enter into a subject (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Children%27s_book_illustration) to simply laying out information whose most natural form is visual (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Floating_the_Skagit_River_from_Marblemount_to_Rockport).

I propose to give some examples of excellence in this area, explain why galleries are [very] different from Commons categories, explain a few pitfalls, and make a call to action for more people to contribute in this area.
