Title:

Community and awareness in an isolated state

Type of session:

Lecture (15-30 min)

Session theme(s):

Credibility, Missing pieces

Abstract:

For the last three years, Montana State University Library has been working to bring together and build upon the active editing community across campus. Montana State University has scattered active editors, but the full potential of editing as an educational tool and a community builder has not been fully realized. The library has connected with the broader editing community outside of Montana to explore these opportunities and lead the charge by hosting edit-a-thons and piloting editing assignments in classrooms. Through this work, MSU Library has been able to connect with departments across campus and has cultivated a growing interest in using Wikipedia in the classroom and encouraging more students to edit. Today's political climate creates an interesting challenge, how to create promotional language that is inclusive and promotes diversity but also flies under the radar of reactive groups.
