Type of session:

Edit-a-thons or Workshops (30-120 min)

Session theme(s):

Missing pieces

Abstract:

lgbtDB (now hosted at Wikibase.Cloud, https://lgbtdb.wikibase.cloud/) was created in 2021, originally in order to pilot LGBTQIA+-inclusive data practices for Wikidata. As political powers shift around the world, it is more important than ever that queer voices, not just from one corner of the world or in one language, begin to undertake the representation (and non-representation) of our data, and that we consider both the positive and negative use cases. This workshop will discuss how lgbtDB can be a repository for LGBTQIA+ knowledge regardless of notability, and work in tandem to pilot and transfer data to Wikidata. We will also work to build out representation and documentation of ongoing LGBTQIA+-related demonstrations, legislation, language, identities, and crucial resources. An outcome of this discussion should be a preliminary collaborative framework for what data should and should not be collected in the LGBTQIA+ context, in relationship to factors such as personal safety, security, political conflicts and questions, the rapid spread of mis- and disinformation, and potential futures.
