Type of session:

Edit-a-thons or Workshops (30-120 min)

Session theme(s):

Missing pieces

Abstract:

We plan on hosting a Wiki scavenger hunt of notable New Yorkers of African Descent and events of the Harlem Renaissance. We would partner with GLAM, and grass -roots Institutions, organization and educators in the area starting at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. Mixed media would lead players to Wikipedia resources both online and in person as well as partnering institutions. We would also have surprises along the way that allow participants (playing solo or in teams) to collect extra points. Collecting answers to Wiki trivia questions, photos and media for Wikimedia Commons, WikiData, WikiVoyage and linguistic side quests to Wikipedia versions of languages spoken in New York, this literal Wiki Adventure is meant to open wide the city, via the exciting world of Wikimedia, to knowledge hunters from beginner to expert. It also encourages engagement and discovery in a fun topic the illuminates New York's Black History and the enjoyment of of digital exposition and research. We plan to offer prizes to the top winners. This is meant to be a game that can be played online as well as in person.
