Session Abstract:
In an era where civic trust is increasingly decentralized and public leadership must adapt to participatory, collaborative norms, how can municipal leaders evolve? This session invites civic technologists, open-government advocates, public librarians, and community organizers to explore how the timeless qualities of human-centered leadership can fuel the future of decentralized, digital-first governance.
Drawing from Jim Carlough’s acclaimed framework, The Six Pillars of Effective Leadership—integrity, focus, empathy, compassion, humor, and stability—participants will discover how these traits function not only as personal leadership competencies, but also as civic design tools that enable transparency, trust-building, and participatory culture in digital and physical spaces alike.
Through real-world insights from Jim’s journey—from council chambers to corporate boardrooms—attendees will gain a practical understanding of how municipal and community leaders can model open-source principles like radical collaboration, ethical accountability, and inclusive governance. We’ll reframe concepts like “integrity” as open data ethics, “humor” as empathic discourse in online communities, and “stability” as cultivating digital civic resilience.
This isn’t just leadership development—it’s leadership reimagined for the collaborative commons. Together, we’ll explore how the next generation of public servants, technologists, and community stewards can blend civic duty with digital fluency and lead from a place of shared values and co-creation.
