Title:

Hands-On Digital Security for Wikipedians Workshop

Type of session:

Edit-a-thons or Workshops (30-120 min)

Session theme(s):

Missing pieces, Future of Wikipedia

Abstract:

In this workshop, we’ll help people take steps to improve their online digital security, ranging from setting up multi-factor authentication, setting up password managers, and opting out of people-search sites. We’ll discuss what specific risks are mitigated using these tools, as well as their limitations. Because it is a workshop, it’ll include a lot of hands-on help for each of these steps.

Previously presented?

I have spoken about people search removal services at ShmooCon, DEF CON's Crypto & Privacy Village, and during online Consumer Reports trainings. I have additionally spoken about privacy and security at a wide range of conferences, including crypto parties in Phoenix, CypherCon, Arizona State University's Study of the U.S. Institutes (SUSI) program, and NGO-ISAC's in-person conference. I've also spoken remotely on it to Western Governors University, online Consumer Reports webinars, and more.

Special requests:

I’d like to adapt this presentation to people’s areas of concern; not sure if a pre-workshop survey is possible but it would be really helpful.

If accepted, depending on interest, I may recruit additional volunteers to help people one-on-one during the session.
