Submissions:2025/Incorporating WikiPortraits into the Wikisphere
This submission has been noted and is pending review for WikiConference North America 2025.
Title:
- Incorporating WikiPortraits into the Wikisphere
Type of session:
- Lecture (15-30 min)
Session theme(s):
- Missing pieces
Abstract:
Uploading images as part of a campaign is just the start. First, images must be categorized in Commons. Commons categories with parent categories and corresponding Wikidata items need to created or linked for individuals who have been photographed. A representative image can be attached to the Wikidata item which may cause the image to display in infoboxes on many different language Wikipedias. The GLAMorgan tool will demonstrate the impact of the campaign.
Author name(s):
Wikimedia username(s):
- Peaceray
Affiliated organization(s):
- Cascadia Wikimedians
Estimated length of session
- 30 minutes although I could do it longer as a workshop if desired.
Will you be presenting remotely?
- I will present in-person
Okay to livestream?
- Livestreaming is okay
Previously presented?
- I presented elements of this at a lengthy Wikipedia Day event in Park City, UT. This will be a more concise & focused presentation.
Special requests:
- Note that I prefer to use my Wikimedia username, Peaceray, which is also my nickname for 45+ years.
Although a WikiPortraits campaign will be illustrated, the same procedures apply to any GLAM image Campaign
- Categorize images when uploading (best practice) and / or add afterwards.
- Create a Commons category for a person with parent categories. Pictures with more than one person can have categories of individuals.
- Create a crop to get an optimum headshot if necessary.
- If not already extant, create a Wikidata item for that person with at least the minimum of label (including mul), description, instance of, and one or two linked data properties.
- Add the Commons category as a link and as a property to the Wikidata item.
- Add the best headshot as an image property and media caption qualifier to the Wikidata item.
- Add the {{Wikidata infobox}} template to the Commons category.
- If the Wikidata item has existed, see what language Wikipedias link to it, check all to see if the Wikidata image is displaying in that Wikipedia, since many Infoboxes automatically pull it from Wikidata. If not, consider adding the image to the article.
- Add the appropriate {{wikipedia:en:Commons category}} template to articles when warranted. See wikdata:Q48029 for a complete list of all languages and sister projects.
- Add additional Wikidata properties.

The examples will come from the 2025 Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF). As SIFF stated this year, "Nearly 51% of our filmmakers are female or nonbinary-identifying, 37% identify as a BIPOC director, and 20% identify as part of the LGBTQIA+ community. 60% of the feature films are from first- or second-time filmmakers, and 73% of films don’t currently have US distribution and may not screen commercially in the United States."
Films from the Global South appeared in the African Pictures, Asian Crossroads, Ibero-American Cinema, and cINeDIGENOUS programs.
