Title:
- Introducing Commons Gallery
Type of session:
- Lightning talk
Session theme(s):
- Missing pieces, Future of Wikipedia
Abstract:
Throughout the years, photographers have flocked to sites like Flickr, Instagram, SmugMug, 500px, and others to share their photos. These sites let users create sleek, modern portfolios of their work in media-first user interfaces. Wikimedia Commons photographers, however, have been more limited in the ways they can easily set up similar showcases of their work. While Wikimedia Commons users can set up galleries on-wiki, it requires knowledge of wiki markup, and the experience lives within the text-first MediaWiki interface. User galleries are not particularly organized nor discoverable by the public at-large.
Portfolios are not only valuable in an individual capacity, but are especially important for photographers looking to apply for credentials at events, or organizations (GLAMs) looking to showcase their work and impact. Some Wikimedia Commons photographers maintain portfolios on separate websites, requiring them to have to upload their photos to two websites instead of one.
In this presentation, we will introduce, Commons Gallery, a new website that WikiPortraits has been developing with support from Wikimedia CH. This site lets you easily build portfolios of photos from Wikimedia Commons (think Flickr, but for wiki!).
We'd love attendees to try it out and provide feedback as the site undergoes active development.
A separate session by Andrew Lih, Reimagining Wikimedia: Toward a Multimedia-First Platform for Free Knowledge, does a deeper dive into rethinking multimedia on Wikimedia. This Commons Gallery submission is just for a quick lightning talk for anyone interested in diving into Commons Gallery in particular.
