Title:

NYC 400: Enhancing Regional Knowledge through Regional Collaboration

Type of session:

Lecture (15-30 min)

Session theme(s):

Missing pieces, Future of Wikipedia

Abstract:

This presentation covers the NYC 400 project, an initiative to celebrate New York City's 400th birthday by enriching Wikipedia's coverage of the city's diverse neighborhoods and notable individuals. The aim of the project is to update or create Wikipedia articles for 400 neighborhoods and 400 impactful New Yorkers. Launched at Wikipedia Day NYC 2025, the project encouraged participation from both experienced Wikipedians and newcomers. A dedicated website, 400nyc.org, was created to facilitate submissions through an online form. This presentation will discuss the project's goals, the submission process, the results of the initiative, and its overall impact. Additionally, the presentation will explore how this project can serve as a model for other regions seeking to enhance the representation of their local knowledge and grow their local community on Wikipedia, including strategies for scaling the project and key elements for its successful implementation in different contexts.
