Title:
- OpenHistoricalMap: a linked, citation- and integration-friendly map complement to Wikimedia
Type of session:
- Lecture (15-30 min)
Session theme(s):
- Credibility, Missing pieces, Future of Wikipedia
Abstract:
OpenHistoricalMap (OHM, https://openhistoricalmap.org) is a nonprofit crowdsourced platform for creating a map of world history at all scales and times, using linked and well-sourced data. It is based on OpenStreetMap (OSM) software and leverages the entire ecosystem of OSM tools. It operates with a different licensing model from OSM, focused on public domain or shareable, non-viral licensing. OHM has a high priority for tight integration with Wikidata and Wikpedia and for citation-based sources for all geodata in its database. To illustrate, a country border depicted in OHM should ideally have links to primary sources that defined that border. While that goal is aspirational at this point, users are building toward that state. The OHM community is building tools for integrating OHM-based maps alongside Wikimedia sources. Another goal is for OHM to have, all SVG-based maps and map animations in Wikimedia represented in OHM, with the primary difference being that all claims will be sourced and the geoodata for the maps will be downloadable and reusable. This session will provide a brief overview of OHM, examples of linking to Wikimedia sources from OHM, the OHM PID (P8424), and OHM integration with Wikipedia. Examples will include: evolution of New York City, the counties aroud New York, and the 1964 World's Fair in New York.
