Title:
- OpenRefine & Wikimedia Communities: Strategic collaboration to meet collective goals
Type of session:
- Lecture (15-30 min)
Session theme(s):
- Credibility, Missing pieces, Future of Wikipedia
Abstract:
If you've ever worked with messy datasets in Wikidata, Wikibase, or other places, you've probably discovered OpenRefine—the amazing open-source tool that makes data cleaning so much easier.
The OpenRefine Advisory Committee is working with community members to create an OpenRefine Wikimedia User Group in order to connect people who love both tools. Think of it as a space where users can meet and build consensus around their needs as a community and to prioritize software development that best supports their wiki-work.
We're also building better ways for Wikimedia community members to jump into OpenRefine's development on GitHub. Whether you're a coder or not, there are plenty of ways to help—from improving documentation and testing features to reporting bugs and suggesting improvements that would make our Wikimedia workflows smoother.
In addition to sharing these two initiatives, we will highlight existing spaces of collaboration, including the OpenRefine Forum and Telegram User Group. Join us to learn about what's already happening, what's coming next, and how you can get involved.
