Title:

video interviews

Type of session:

Lecture (15-30 min)

Session theme(s):

Missing pieces

Abstract:

[lightning talk or short lecture] I want to put on the table various ways we could use audio of video interviews, to be uploaded to Commons, in support of Wikipedia. Among the possible uses:

  • "WikiAffidavits": the Wikipedias have long been plagued with the situation where when one side of a story has been published, but others haven't, we have no citable source for the other side. This is particularly problematic when the unciteable side is the person who is the subject of the article. I propose being able to create citeable indications of involved parties' takes on stories by actively creating primary documentation of their viewpoints.
  • Oral history in general.
  • Documentation of traditions in oral cultures, especially for languages with little or no tradition of writing.
