Title:

Publishing peer reviewed Academic Volumes: How and Why we do it to Improve Wikipedia’s Credibility

Type of session:

Lecture (15-30 min)

Session theme(s):

Credibility, Missing pieces, Future of Wikipedia

Abstract:

This session will explain the whys and the how of the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Women_in_Religion/Women_in_Religion_series, now in its 5th volume. This series of monographs contains biographies about overlooked women in religion as well as chapters discussing barriers to and strategies for increasing the coverage of women in the media generally and on Wikipedia specifically. This publishing project works to increase the availability of reliable secondary sources about noteworthy, under-recognized women in religion, raising the visibility of cis and transgender women in order to address the Wikipedia gender gap. We will discuss the following topics: 1. Volume topics and themes; 2. Editor/Organizer: a champion moving a theme from possibility to actuality 3. Building a volume, developing a call for papers, and recruiting authors; 4. The importance of citation guidelines and copy editing. 5. Author experiences: Why do they do it? 6. Publishers: understanding open access options, including licensing. 6. Wikipedia articles using our secondary sources; 7. Increasing Wikipedia's credibility by working across the boundary between Wikipedia and academic peer-reviewed volumes.
