Abstract:

LGBTQ+ people worldwide experience erasure, discrimination, persecution, and violence from states and non-governmental entities. In the face of various forms of oppression, Wikipedia and its contributors are in a unique position to preserve queer histories, provide critical knowledge, and challenge harmful misinformation at an international scale. How effective are these efforts? In this talk, we will discuss the different ways in which Wikipedia shapes LGBTQ+ narratives and how they impact queer people. We will also present a case study on the advantages and barriers of using Wikipedia in Queer History Club, a local community program designed to share stories of international LGBTQ+ culture and people throughout history.
