Title:

Respecting the Names of Indigenous People

Type of session:

Lecture (15-30 min)

Session theme(s):

Missing pieces

Abstract:

Historically, Europeans and Americans of European descent have often struggled with the names of Indigenous people and the places where they lived in North America. As a result, mangled spellings, dubious translations, and random nicknames end up being used in Wikipedia in articles about Indigenous people. While article titles should be based in policy, we should attempt, whenever reliable sources are available, to present in articles an account of Indigenous names and their meanings that is as accurate as possible. I will be presenting examples of what can be done primarily from articles about Indigenous people in what is now the Southeastern United States from the first arrival of Europeans until the 19th century. I have written some material here.
