Title:

Sharing New York Public Library Data with Wikidata and Beyond

Type of session:

Lecture (15-30 min)

Session theme(s):

Missing pieces

Abstract:

Many Wikimedians have drawn research, images, and metadata from the free and public-domain materials of the New York Public Library over the years, but NYPL staff have recently begun a more concerted effort to model and describe the extensive collections and projects of the NYPL Research Libraries. Representing the New York Public Library's Wikidata Working Group, Emma Clarkson and Samie Konet will share highlights of the institution’s WikiProject, including their work transforming archival data about theatre and dance collections into Wikidata, which still has significant content gaps for the performing arts. Will Kent from Wiki Education will highlight how initiatives like this benefit from courses like the Wikidata Salon to provide broader exposure and education on and about Wikidata.
