Title:

Teaching Writing and Research with Wikipedia+AI - Student Perspectives

Type of session:

Lecture (15-20 min)

Session theme(s):

Credibility, Future of Wikipedia

Abstract:

In Spring 2025, an English composition class at LaGuardia Community College piloted the use of Generative AI (GAI) in academic research for Wikipedia assignments. This was the first class in the WikiEducation Foundation system to incorporate GAI to help students draft new articles and explore its (arguably) ethical use. Students were tasked with researching and writing Wikipedia article entries based on their personal interests, and their work reflected a wide range of topics, such as Transnational cinema in India, and African American film score composers, which examines the role of African American music in American film history. On June 4, 2025, we celebrated with a “publishing party” during our class session when students shared their work with the world. In this panel, LaGuardia students will share their experiences and concerns, and we will talk about what we learned in the process.
