Title:

The Wikipedia Test: Introduction to a new advocacy tool

Type of session:

Lecture (15-30 min)

Session theme(s):

Future of Wikipedia

Abstract:

Lawmakers often try to target large social media companies with their policy proposals, but in many cases, these laws also impact Wikipedia and other public interest projects. How can we get them to be more careful? In 2023, public interest technologist Mallory Knodel proposed an idea for lawmakers to consider: if your proposal makes it harder for Wikipedia to exist, it’s probably not a great proposal. The WMF Global Advocacy Team has expanded on this idea to help policymakers and advocates better understand the unconsidered consequences of policy proposals. Join us to learn how the Global Advocacy team and YOU can help protect the best parts of the internet.
