Title:

When AI Meets Folksonomy: Enhancing Wikipedia Navigation for BVI Users

Type of session:

Lecture (15-30 min)

Session theme(s):

Future of Wikipedia

Abstract:

Navigating Wikipedia’s vast knowledge poses unique challenges for Blind and Visually Impaired (BVI) users, who rely on screen readers and alternative formats to access information. While Wikipedia’s traditional metadata structures provide some support, they often fail to fully meet BVI users’ diverse accessibility needs. This session explores how the intersection of AI and folksonomy can create a more intuitive, efficient, and accessible Wikipedia navigation system for BVI users. We will discuss how AI-driven tagging suggestions, natural language processing (NLP), and machine learning algorithms can enhance metadata, enabling screen readers and assistive technologies to retrieve information more effectively. The session will include a hypothetical case study, explore ethical considerations in AI accessibility design, and propose a collaborative framework. Participants will gain insights into AI-human collaboration, inclusive design, and folksonomy-based accessibility strategies for Wikimedia projects.
