Title:

workshop on writing lua backed templates

Type of session:

Edit-a-thons or Workshops (30-120 min)

Session theme(s):

Missing pieces, Future of Wikipedia

Abstract:

Wikimedia projects rely heavily on templates to keep things running. Wikimedia Commons uses thousands of localized license and information templates. Wikisource use many formatting templates. Wikipedia has many infoboxes, maintenance, formatting, cleanup and other templates. As templates are getting more complex, or if they are interacting with other projects, like Wikidata, they are often recreated in Lua. This workshop aims to be hands-on introduction of new users to Lua. It will be helpful to have some familiarity with Wikimedia templates and with some modern programming languages.
