This workshop will provide participants a chance to take part in shaping the content and format of SuSa’s training materials. We will be asking you to share your experiences and challenges in running edit-a-thons, moderating online disputes, and reducing harassment on the Wikimedia projects. We will lead breakout sessions and knowledge sharing exercises to explore what volunteer training should include, and how it could be implemented in our communities. Topics will include de-escalation techniques, relevant policies, dispute resolution, and more.
The Wikimedia Foundation is dedicated to creating safe spaces for users – regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, sex, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, race, ethnicity, national origin, age, political affiliation, religion or community status – to meet, interact, learn and collaborate. This goal applies both online, on Wikimedia projects, and offline, during real-life editing events and meetups run by or sponsored by the Wikimedia Foundation.
Functionary and community governance groups – including stewards, admins, global admins, and Arbitration Committees – play a crucial administrative and editorial role on all our sites, especially in curtailing harassment of volunteers and arbitrating and resolving disputes. Similarly, event organizers and on-site volunteers play a key role in preventing and addressing harassment and friendly-space-policy violations at events.
To help these key user groups better coordinate their work to promote safe environments for community members, we are facilitating, during the 2016-17 year, the development and deployment of two modules based around the critical areas of addressing harassment online and at events. This session will help Wikimedia communities get involved in the crafting and decision-making around these modules.
