Presentation

Abstract:

A Health Sciences Librarian at a prominent health sciences university in Canada has been leveraging relationships with experts on campus to improve Wikipedia.

This presentation will discuss initiatives set in motion by a health sciences librarian who seeks to foster a culture of Wikipedia campus-wide. These activities include:

1. Leveraging a relationship with an undergraduate educational program to teach a course that requires students to learn evidence-based practice and critical appraisal skills by editing 1-2 Wikipedia articles over the course of a term 2. Co-Founding a "Wiki Club" based out of the university that invites the entire community to learn how to edit Wikipedia's health information 2. Initiating an annual "Wikipedia + Health" event in 2018 that invites participants to engage in dialogue around Wikipedia has a health information source and encourage professionals to contribute their expertise.

The impact measures of this work will be discussed in addition to a discussion of the challenges and achievements of changing on-campus perceptions of Wikipedia.
