- Abstract
- A humorous German-American monologue about your rights as an American and your rights as a Wikipedian introduces our guest speaker: a Washington DC diversity professional (to be announced). We will learn the basics about diversity, civil rights, and the rights to a non-hostile workplace and educational environment that Americans enjoy in real life.
(Note: Awaiting confirmation by diversity professional pending acceptance of talk.)
Are the rights that you enjoy as an American the same as the rights you enjoy as a Wikipedian? What is the background as to how the current situation on diversity in the United States has developed, and what some of the options for the Wikipedia community? How do organizations reconcile the right to free speech with the right to be free from identity-based harassment? What sorts of governance mechanisms have been used to address diversity in other workplaces, educational institutions, and organizations?
A truly comprehensive online encyclopedia requires participation from diverse individuals, from different cultures, ethnic groups, genders, age groups, educational status, occupational groups, and countries; yet developing the social norms that foster diverse participation in an international online setting is very much a work in progress.
By getting a clearer understanding of how diversity is handled in the US, and in US workplaces and organizations, it is hoped that participants will better prepared to address the larger picture of diversity within the Wikimedia organizations.
Questions and answers are encouraged.
Your MC, Monumenteer2014camper, will present with a paper bag over her head, so as to avoid the pushback she has received online as a result of advocating for a non-hostile workplace under US law. (Paper bags will be provided to maintain confidentiality for any participant who wants one :)
