Lodging

Gaslamp Quarter - Historic Heart of San Diego

Lodging in the area close to the Central Library is generally higher-priced than in outlying areas, but inexpensive options do exist. The planning committee has visited several places that are close to the venue and reasonably priced.

The motels and hotels close to Balboa Park, where the culture crawl events will occur, are generally a little less expensive than in the Gaslamp Quarter, though availability of public transportation may be an issue for people who do not have a car. There are a number of reasonably-priced lodgings south of Balboa Park between the park and the Gaslamp Quarter/East Village

We have searched for lodging within striking distance of the Library and Balboa Park advertised as under $200 per night for October 7–10. As always, book early for the best selection.

Price search was done on August 12, 2016 and is for comparison purposes only. Both rates and availability are subject to change at any time and are apt to go up the closer to the event you book your room. Anyone who can ask for a AAA or other discount can, most likely, get a 10–15% discount on room rates. Also, it may be possible to get a lower room rate by calling a hotel directly rather than booking online.

Core hostels and hotels

Conference organizers have personally visited the following, which are relatively close to the venue. We are providing this information for the convenience of attendees:

Hostel International San Diego Downtown
  • The Hostel International (HI) Downtown San Diego on Market Street is one of the best bargains within the Gaslamp Quarter. Shared dormitory-style rooms are very inexpensive (starting at about $40/night) and private rooms with shared bathrooms ($100-$125/night +) are less expensive than any hotel in the Gaslamp Quarter area. To get these rooms, you also need to join HI, which is $28 for adults 18-54 for a year, or you can simply pay $3/day on top of your daily room rate. Note: Some dorms do not have air conditioning. Lockers (furnish you own lock or buy one onsite for $5) and locked storage are available. If you find a lower price online, you can call the hostel directly and they will attempt to beat it.
  • Hotel Indigo (4 star) - this is the closest hotel to San Diego Central Library and features a rooftop deck. $179-$265 (as of September 7 via Kayak.com).
  • Hilton Garden Inn San Diego Downtown/Bayside. This hotel is very close to the airport and is 3.5 miles from the venue by freeway (or 2 miles by foot) - a 15-minute cab or Uber/Lyft ride away. We have a courtesy block of rooms reserved here at the rate of $155/night from Thursday Oct 6-Monday Oct 10. To take advantage of this rate, click here to make your reservation for the WikiConference North America or call 877-782-9444 and mention the "WikiConference" and the Hilton Garden Inn Downtown/Bayside San Diego to receive the group rate.

Things to do

San Diego Zoo is the world's sixth largest

The San Diego Tourism Authority has an extensive website with information on tourism options. The Travel Channel also lists many activities as well as information on restaurants.

San Diego is well-known for its World-famous Zoo in Balboa Park, SeaWorld, and the USS Midway Museum.

Seaport Village, a waterfront shopping and dining complex adjacent to San Diego Bay is 1.2 miles (1.9 km) from the Central Library.

Old Town San Diego State Historic Park is 4.7 miles (7.5 km), or a 28 minute trolley ride from the Central Library.

More adventurous conference attendees may enjoy touring outlying portions of the city using a San Diego Trolley pass, viewing coastal scenery from the connecting Coaster, or taking the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner trains through the undeveloped terrain of Camp Pendleton in Oceanside.

A tour of the city waterfront is via one of the harbor cruises: Flagship Cruises and Events or Hornblower. The harbor tours offer some exposure to San Diego's rich history as the primary west coast port of the United States Navy. Also on San Diego Bay is the Maritime Museum of San Diego.

Palomar Observatory
Hard Rock Cafe of San Diego

Mission Bay, near the mouth of the San Diego River north of Point Loma, which includes Cabrillo National Monument and the Old Point Loma Lighthouse, is the largest man-made aquatic park in the United States with miles of sandy beaches and pedestrian paths to enjoy the southern California coastal climate in a park-like atmosphere. Nearby is Belmont Park, an amusement park and carnival built by sugar magnate John D. Spreckels featuring the Giant Dipper, a roller coaster he commissioned in 1925. Further north is La Jolla Cove, Torrey Pines States Natural Reserve, Flying Leatherneck Museum, Legoland California, San Diego Zoo Safari Park, and the Palomar Observatory. To the west, there is the iconic and historic Hotel del Coronado, built in 1888. San Diego County is also home to the largest number of Indian Reservations in any county in the United States. Information about these reservations can be found here, and information about casinos on those reservations can be found here.

Eight miles (13 km) to the north of the Central Library is Mission San Diego de Alcalá, which was California's first Franciscan mission, the site of the first Christian burial in Alta California and the site of the region's first public execution, in 1778.

Visiting Tijuana or Rosarito Beach, Mexico

Rosarito Beach, Baja

Tijuana shares a border with San Diego.

Rosarito Beach, a popular tourist destination, is 13 miles (21 km) south of Tijuana. Rosarito Beach is home to the world's largest movie set tank where films such as Titanic  and Perfect Storm  were filmed. It is also an art colony. There are opportunities for horseback riding on the beach, and other beachfront activities.

Crossing into Mexico is fairly routine, but getting back into the U.S. entails greater scrutiny and documents. Expect a much longer wait to return than to enter. To travel to and from Mexico, the requirements for crossing the border are here. Additionally, to re-enter the United States please remember to have one of the following documents listed here or here; to go much further into Mexico requires a passport and a Forma Migratoria Multiple  (FMM), which is available for the asking at the border crossing. The FMM may be required at various checkpoints within the country. If you are traveling alone with minor children, be sure to bring along notarized permission from the other parent authorizing their travel with you. Do not bring firearms into Mexico. Special auto insurance is required.

For participants interested in travel to Mexico, please read Global Affairs Canada's Mexico Travel Warning and the U.S. State Department's Mexico Travel Warning, particularly for Baja California, which is the state where Tijuana is located.
