Hi Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos team, can you speak a little more to the following:
- can you give examples of articles that you would improve? Can you provide examples of how this project improves credibility for example.
- how do you plan on getting contributions? can you describe your plan for outreach, especially as you aim for over 1000 contributions?
- related to this, do you have any examples of past success that you can share?
- why is the project running from July through August; do you already have some other funding for this time period or soon?
Thanks much! Connie, 6 April 2020
- Hello User:Connie and thanks for your feedback and questions. Please find our answers below.
- Good. Examples of articles we want to improve are here. There are several others in non-English language Wikipedias, for example es:Agege & es:Estado de Lagos. I'd like to provide two examples of how this project improves credibility. If a woman is referred to as "Black-American", adding her photo to the article would improves the credibility of the article (the claims). Let's look at the article en:Olumo Rock for example. The section on "Tourism" reads " Olumo Rock is located in Abeokuta". this photo added to improve the article by User:Olaniyan Olushola shows the entrance of the site which reads "Olumo Rock Tourist Complex, Ikija, Abeokuta North LG". This photo improves the credibility of the article in some ways. (1) It shows our readers that the text information about the rock's location is correct (2) It shows our readers that the Rock is indeed a tourist site of attraction as claimed by the articles (3) it also validated the sources provide to support the claims. One of the sources provided to support the article as a site of attraction is dead. Assuming this was the only source provided or others are dead, our readers would still consider the article credible as a result of the photo. That's unlikely to happen if the image isn't there.
- We plan to reach out to all Wikimedia affiliates (Chapters & User Group) and other organized groups, Wikimedia community leaders, & project leaders. We have collated all their contacts including their respective affiliate mailing lists. In addition, our community liaison would reach out to all language Wikipedia community portals, & WikiProjects. There would be a central banner on display during this contest. We are in several Wikimedia platforms including Telegram, Facebook etc. We will recruit participants through those platforms as well. We will also have a dedicated Facebook, & twitter handle for promotion and outreach.
- Sure, we have a diverse group of people in our team. Personally, I have coordinated at least 5 national Wikimedia contest. They most recent ones are this and this to mention a few. One of this contest facilitator, User:Jamie Tubers is the founder and coordinator of en:Wikipedia:Wikiproject AfriCine/Months of African Cinema an article writing contest that has added hundreds of articles to multiple language Wikipedias. Our advisor is a long time Wikipedians, former chair, WMF and co-founder and coordinator of Wiki Loves Africa that has been running annually since 2014.
- There are several Wiki Loves contest (Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves Earth etc) that run every year. For example, Wiki Loves Africa run from March through April and Wiki Loves Earth run from May through June. We decided to run ours from July through August because we don't want it to coincide with other major contests. We do not have funding yet. Please let us know if you have additional questions.
