New York City, or NYC, is the most populous city of the United States with an estimated population in 2023 of 8.2 million people. The city consists of five boroughs; Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island. New York City is a global hub for arts, entertainment, media, finance, technology, and culture with many significant sites related to these fields to explore. Beyond being a major site for tourism, NYC has a large immigrant population and the borough of Queens holds the title of the most ethnically and linguistically diverse urban area in the world. There are as many as 800 different languages spoken in New York. Culturally, New York City has been the birthplace of many cultural movements including the Harlem Renaissance, abstract expressionism, hip hop music, punk music, salsa music, and LGBTQ+ rights as home to one of the largest LGBTQ+ populations in the world.
