Title:
- Fighting Fake News with Real Information: Newspapers on Wikipedia
Theme:
- Reliability of Information
Type of session:
- Presentation
Abstract:
We added and expanded numerous Wikipedia articles about existing newspapers, in an all-volunteer effort run with minimal funding. This project had several beneficial outcomes: (1) Internet users will now more readily find Knowledge Panel results indicating how long a newspaper has existed, and other key information, when using Google or Facebook. (2) Wikipedia readers will more readily find such information. (3) Our approach may serve as a model for "content sprints" on Wikipedia, and for engaging and retaining new Wikipedia editors, especially through college courses. (4) We began to build tools to measure our success which could prove useful to related efforts in the future.

Special requests:
Have you presented on this topic previously? If yes, where/when?:
- Yes, but at a smaller scale, and prior to the project's conclusion (lightning talks and unconference sessions at Wikicite 2018). I have presented more generally on Wikipedia and journalism at a number of conferences for more than a decade.
If your submission is not accepted, would you be open to presenting your topic in another part of the program? (e.g. lightning talk or unconference session)
- Yes (I'd be especially open to repurposing it for a roundtable discussion on Wikipedia content sprints)
